  • Sailing & living on a boat means that you have to be flexible with your plans.
Unfortunately it can be really tough when you have your heart set on a course of action then Fate intervenes, and a huge change of plan is required.
While we had planned to sail some of the Worlds best cruising grounds, it wasn't going to be. In this episode we find ourselves facing a huge dilemma as our weather window starts to close.
    The equipment we use:
    Panasonic Lumix G85 amzn.to/2FsC2Kc
Go Pro Hero 7 Black amzn.to/2SRTWtF
    DJI Mavic Pro 2 amzn.to/2D6nZbs
    DJI Spark amzn.to/2VQIal3
    Manfrotto Pixie amzn.to/2RJbCud
    Manfrotto Smooth head tripod amzn.to/2snTJCQ
    DJI Osmo 2 amzn.to/2D7e9Go
    Lowepro Passport 3 amzn.to/2FnGef8
All this equipment has been tried and tested in the field and we love it! If you're interested in purchasing any of these items, please consider using the links provided above. Thankyou :)

The best part of the video is just about half way through when Nick is describing how the throttle is not engaging the prop when it should be and the advertisement for "Ruby Rose is for Sale" pops up. It was perfect!
I'd like to see how many more videos Nick can interject the phrase "clutch cones" in the future. With all the fear that's going on in the world, I'm using "clutch cones" as my drinking phrase. You almost got me through a half of a fifth of Gosling. "Clutch Cones" for everyone!!

@@sailingrubyrose The best selling point was how ridiculously clean the engine compartment was at the point of breakdown. I'm used to going down into the engine room/compartment and seeing coolant spraying over everything or smoke/fire/sparks shooting across the bay. Nice job.

Good decision and great musicians. I had a 1937 Kelvin K3 on a 48’ wooden boat which had huge cone clutches one for forward and one for reverse. There was always a sledgehammer handy in the engine room to bash the coupling as driving in forward gear for any length of time made it almost impossible to get it out of gear. Not what you want when entering a port.... Andy UK

Well for what it is worth I am thankful to see more of La Rochelle. Spent this winter doing some genealogy and have found that my maternal grandfather came from Quebec, Canada, and his family emigrated to Canada from La Rochelle during the early 1700's.
I seriously doubt I will ever be able to travel there, so your images of the area are of great interest to me. Thanks for taking the time to document life there. Yoru skills with the camera when it comes to sharing the day to day life in the places you visit are second to none.
Been a subscriber for some time and I look forward to notifications from your channel, I hope you are both weathering the current world situation well. We had the same problem once as well. No forward and only reverse. We were leaving Maloolabar in Australia and near the entrance. We reversed back to our birth for about quarter of a mile. The difficult bit was we were a long keel yacht! Fortunately we were a double ender so it did not look to bad going backwards. Had to adjust the clutch cone. Watch what the mechanic does to adjust your clutch cone it is very easy that i learnt how to do it after watching the mechanic. Takes about 10 minutes. Another thing i learnt from a wise old fisherman is that many gear box problems are caused by having the wrong oil in them. Literally change the oil to the correct spec and most of your problems go away. It is very common for the wrong oil to be in the box.

Situations like these you definitely need two-way headsets to communicate. This can lead to miscommunication, causing injuries when one person down below has a tight grip on the shifter tightening up a bolt while the person above turns the key or engage the gears by mistake. Just a thought.

They are selling the boat and moving on. A boat in this price range would dive considerably in price if it had non standard modifications. Electric motors, no problem we have an electric propulsion specialist right here in Sydney (600 miles away). I use a waterproof camera on a stick. Does a good job of prop inspections, but the bloody Wifi doesn't work underwater. I was particularly interested in a boat that came standard with a genset for the air conditioning. The owner, a man of considerable means, had had it removed. Because the friggin thing had broken down time and time again and the repairs were horrendously expensive and needed parts shipped from Italy. He thought the manufacturers should be jailed for wasting the earth's valuable resources to create that confection of mechanical disasters. I had an intercom, but the woman next door kept answering it. Seriously! I put it in the charity shop.

I had this problem with an Yanmar SD50 saildrive. Reverse worked since the cone clutch engagement was down and helped by gravity. The forward part of cone clutch was pushed up so slipped easier. I was able to lap the cone clutch myself which fixed the problem. I then blew the oil seal between engine and saildrive so I ended up replacing it with an Sd60 drive which has plates for clutch rather the a cone setup.

Before you opened the engine compartment I knew I would see the little gray ZF box. They are light, compact, inexpensive and have an expected service life of 500 hours. Great for a marina queen, not so much for a cruiser. Typically you get many hours of warning (tiny flecks in the fluid and delayed engaging).
I know, there is no room in the compartment to place a HD hydraulic transmission, so hopefully you ordered a second rebuild kit and buried it in a locker for next time.

Mine is only 18 years old, are you suggesting I might expect trouble sometime soon?

    • @brucefletcher6179
      @brucefletcher6179 4 роки тому

@@philgray1023 It depends on the usage and hours. Hi rev long cruises run the overheat problem, accelerating plate breakdown (most don't come with a heat exchanger but ZF does make a cooler box that bolts to the side, redirect your raw water flow thru it between the raw pump and oil cooler). The other wear accelerator is gear thrashing hard forward then reverse in tight docking maneuvers. There are two good wear signs to watch for, delayed engagement when you put it in gear ( troubleshoot this from low fluid levels, which will also cause delayed engagement and when even lower, full slippage). The other wear sign is small black 'flecks' in the fluid when you check the level. This one means the plates are already crumbling. There are rebuild kits available for all their models, and it really isn't that complicated, but I have found rebuild kits are priced at 60-80% of the price of a drop in replacement. ZF's are light, relatively cheap and easy to fit in tight engine rooms, but if yours doesn't need a rebuild now, it will sooner or later. I repowered last year and used a PRM hydraulic on the new engine, but weight and space weren't an issue for me.

Well I assume that you have had the email from La Rochelle marina explaining that all recreational boating is suspended for some time. Our boat is also in La Rochelle and we were there do do some work this weekend and we heard about the boarders being closed so had to do a run up to Calais and get the ferry back home.
We have no idea when we will be back aboard Jigsaw and I guess you must now be in the same position.

First thing I would have checked. Is gearbox oil level. . Low oil will do what yours is doing that. . I'm a boat mechanic. On narrowboats. But they all use the same engines gearboxes.

Hey Nick, did they use a dial indicator to align the shafts via the clutch cone coupling? I have a lot of experience doing this type of work, and would feel very uncomfortable without this vital alignment tool regardless of the flexibility built into the coupling.

I’m sitting here having just finished the video and the last minute just kind of stopped me. So many UA-cam channels with great camera work and editing skills. And you have that. But I think I’m figuring out that it’s more important to know what to film than how to film it. How many of us would walk past those guys singing and say “oh that’s only good for a quick ten second insert of life in La Rochelle” instead of, “With the right focus, the right merging of the setup to the song with a recap of where we are, and creative use of the soundtrack, that’d be an emotionally fulfilling and almost nostalgic ending to a video.”
