    As to the AK's robustness, I worked in Burundi during their civil war and used a pickup truck to get around and whenever I drove anywhere there would be a constant bang of soldiers throwing their AK's into the truck bed and then sprinting to catch up and jump in the back, this was the accepted way to bum a lift. It was only years later when I became better educated on gun handling that I realised that I should probably have been more concerned about having a fully loaded automatic rifle land with force behind my head.

    One thing I always recommend to shooters who want to try 2 gun or 3 gun is forget about the competition part. Just take it nice and slow and focus on finishing the stage in a relaxed manner. Most first timers often exhibit a combination of Excitement, Some Fear and a little Insecurity and often try to compete over their capabilities as they suddenly have to worry about numerous interactions in a dynamic environment. In your first matches it is better to relax, get used to the discipline and focus on being accurate and mostly SAFE!. The competition will grow on you and you will become more competitive over time just by competing and having fun safely.

    If someone is set on DA/SA than the old Ruger P-series is a good low-cost option, particularly a Ruger P95DC. CZ and Beretta are also great choices in current production. The PX4 and 92 series can be had in a decock-only which is designated by the G models so I would highly recommend looking for those or if you get a good deal on a used one both can be converted to a G.

    Thanks Karl, if you haven't been there yet, you will find it quite interesting as to how the whole battle played out. Walking Little Big Horn, as is any battlefield, a humbling experience. At LBH you can see clusters of markers where Soldiers and Native Americans fell. The is a true run-n-gun battlefield, covering several miles. After a wildfire several years ago, the scorched earth uncovered quite a few relics. Uncovered were human remains and cartridge casings, the Archeologists were able to track specific rifles across the entire battlefield. Therefore giving greater detail to the unfolding of the Battle. There is also a National Cemetery on the location.

    If you wanted to do an old west style match, you could separate it into some divisions:
    Old West: Shoot old west style guns.
    New West: Shoot modern guns as if they were old (download magazines)
    Time Traveller: Shoot whatever you like.
    You've probably considered this before but in case you haven't, I thought you might like the suggestion.

    I think Soviet (not necissarly Russian) equipment was built to specs for the reality it faced/faces. Just as US equipment is. Neither being more or less advanced where it counts. (Well in certain areas the West had a clear advantage though)
    Soviet stuff is built to cope with poor infrastructure, be it bad runways for aircrafts or almost non-existing supply lines., because western equipment can rely on good runways and a infrastructure closing on perfection (atleast, in perception), the US or most of western, nowadays even central Europe could/can afford the luxury that is overengineered comfortable, safe(relative) stuff.
    In two wars where the Western world fights on it's terms and in the other the Soviets fight on their terms, I'm willing to bet that the average western soldier would be a lot more comfortable, safe and healthy compared to the Russian, however the Russian wouldn't have to rely on their logistical backing as much.

      l was trained to use an MT-LBV Soviet APC, and they really were superbly simple to fix as well. If some device stops working, hit it with something. If something is too hot, pour snow on it. If something is too cold, rev the engine more. l also doubt an American diesel engine would run from a cold start in -30 C.

      Taistelukalkkuna Our heater was broken, we did eventually fix it in late April, though. Anyway, the heating put out so much exhaust that you had to keep some hatches open or you'd die in there. Brilliant. And it's not like one flipped a switch, it took about 5 minutes to start the heating system.

    For the question about full auto I would have to agree with the concept that full auto doesn't truly change the abilities of a riflemen but where full auto pays off is with the automatic riflemen who can suppress a lot easier with full auto. Also full auto can help in CQB when using an smg but that is a small consideration in most situations because they are not a common weapon for soldiers.

    To answer the question asked by Daniel, the Ruger Mini-14 is a great option for self-defense here in California. It is reliable, runs steel case, and is reasonably accurate.

    • @Sunfade38
      @Sunfade38 7 років тому

      You can get an AR15 for much less, unfortunately restrictions will take place as of January 1st, 2017. I would very much like a mini 14 but it should only cost $500 to at least remain competitive. No one is going to buy them at $800 or more typically new.

    • @DemonDevistation
      @DemonDevistation 7 років тому

      TL;DR: AR's are cheaper than they should be and require annoying stuff like bullet buttons.
      The AR rifle is produced and bought in such large quantities that you can really get away with much smaller profit margins. Not to mention that 50+ years of military use has taught manufacturers very cost effective way to make it. Also, the Mini-14 is a featureless rifle from stock.

    • @Sunfade38
      @Sunfade38 7 років тому

      The mini 14 doesn't have the ability to easily mount things on it, the stock Ruger rings are trash as well. 2-3MOA accuracy isn't too impressive either, neither is a titling bolt. The AR15 is as cheap as it is for the reasons you've stated but also because of economies of scale. If everyone was tooled up to build mini-14's they would be far cheaper as they should be.

    • @DemonDevistation
      @DemonDevistation 7 років тому

      Erik Zamudio Well, the point of buying a Mini-14 here in California is to have a semiautomatic rifle that doesn't have a muzzle device, folding/adjustable stock, pistol grip, muzzle device, or foregrip. For those of us without the means to leave, it's a competent rifle and any attachments could make it lose the featureless status.

    Do you think Ian and yourself would ever do more "run of the mill" (less "unique" than the exploding ammo for example) ammo tests? For example, an "SBR ammo test" would be very interesting I think, especially if you could get your hands on things like Mk318, M855A1, Mk262, TAP loads, and so on.

  • @dwightehowell8179
    @dwightehowell8179 7 років тому

    I do respect what Karl said about home defense, sort off. If you are operating at a military level, and you lack neighbors, I'd say that will work better than what I'd suggest.
    As I think both Karl and Ian have noted the army wanted to issue a .30 carbine rather than colt .45 to second line forces because most people are vastly more effective with vastly less training with a carbine than a handgun. I'm going to add that firing a gun inside a house without hearing protection will damage your hearing and the blast of gun fire will rattle your cage even if you were the one that dropped the hammer inside a room. Discharging something like a .308 or any other full power round in an urban setting is Russian roulette with a loaded gun and is astoundingly loud inside a building. You have no idea where that round may stop but you know bloody well it can shoot all the way through a frame house. The NRA once recommended a shotgun loaded with bird shot which does make a big mess out of a human at short range and dry wall tends to stop it.
    I will simply recommend a carbine in a handgun caliber and I don't really care if it is in .30 carbine, 9 mm, or some other magazine fed round or a Winchester 1982 in a .357 or 44 magnum as long as your are proficient with it and the gun works. They can all end a disagreement PDQ.
    To repeat I'm just talking about a home invasion by criminals. If you are planning to join a militia or police auxiliary or something and may take part in a full scale military action then my advice is sub optimal. If you just want to defend your home against criminals I regard Karl's advice as being sub optimal and in some ways dangerous to both you and others. In an apartment complex about the only sane option is the shotgun loaded with a low powered charge of bird shot unless you are willing to spend the rest of your life in the pen for killing innocent third parties. Of course you don't have to take my advice about this but I'm not going to donate to your legal defense fund either.

    I just recently finished building my AR and I have been debating whether or not to get a setup that has both iron sights and a red dot or just go with the red dot. I was thinking that if my optic goes down I can use my irons as my back up, or in the phrase many would use, BUIS(Back Up Iron Sights). Which do you think is best?

    Great video, Karl, nice and informative. I've got a question for you though - the firearm having been mentioned - where do you think the SKS has an advantage over say, an AK, or say VZ.58 , being a Czech? I am somehow drawn to the looks of the gun more than I am to more modern style rifles, and was wondering what merit does the SKS hold? Against the AK, I feel the stripper clips are a plus for a "civilian" application, because of the saved weight, and also being more suited for more peculiar shooting positions, since there's no pistol grip or magazine to speak of to be in the way. Sight radius? Simplicity of the firearm? I am not saying I do not plan to get one of the more modern rifles later, I am just wondering what to get first - my reasoning being that if I am better off to get a firearm I am more likely to enjoy. Thanks you for the content!

    Forgive my ignorance, as I'm from the UK and my experience is with bolt action rifles and the L85 specifically, but the DA/SA issue is that the first trigger pull also cocks back the hammer, and subsequent shots are lighter pulls right? Doesn't just pulling the hammer before the first shot eliminate that issue? Am I misinformed on that? Have I misunderstood how DA/SA handguns work? If I am correct, is it that relying on being able to draw, pull the hammer and fire is one too many steps in a self defence situation? I'm just curious, I'm a big fan of Sig handguns in particular, and were I to ever own a handgun it'd probably be a 226 or a 320. I'm genuinely curious.

      A Mini is my only safe bet as it's the only intermediate cartridge semi-auto allowed for hunting, and you have to be pretty active within gun competitions for two years before one is allowed to buy a rifle such as an AK or AR alongside with your pistol.

      For the reason he stated, trigger pull. Have yet to see a new shooter pick up a revolver and actually hit a target consistently. Once you get proficient with a DA/SA they are great but most people don't invest the time to hit the range more than a few times a year let alone practice trigger pulls.

    If you read the laws, New York beats California quite comfortably. I currently live in said oppressive state, and we can't get sh*t. A "featureless" (neutered) rifle can't have a pistol grip, adjustable and/or folding stock, bayonet lug, threaded barrel, muzzle device, grenade launcher, or second place with which to improve your grip on the rifle with nonfiring hand (so no foregrips, period, including handstops). That's just rifles, don't even get me started on pistol rules. Granted these rules only apply to semi autos with detachable magazines (which the state defines as mags themselves, boxes, and belts). Bullet buttons are also banned by name. CA is getting more restrictive now with the new year but Emperor Cuomo's (un)"SAFE" Act real screwed over law abiding gun owners here, and believe it or not, is a more than minor factor contributing to the population hemorrhage that the state is experiencing.
    "New York, where if you own it we'll tax it, and if it's fun we'll regulate until it's no longer fun."

    • @zillsburyy1

      ESA221 if people are denied for their LTC the police have to provide a detailed reason in writing. before it was up to you to prove to the court that you were a good person. now they have to submit their version why they think you might be unsuitable to carry. but if you get denied a lot of people just contact Commonwealth Second Amendment and their team will sink their teeth into any one person or organization denying you your second amendment rights. I joined as a plaintiff to have restrictions removed from my LTC . it was in court for 2 years but we won! didn't cost me a penny
