Thanks so much for teaching this craft in the most basic manner. A drop spindle is a luxury when it comes to survival. And teaching this way demonstrates the fundamentals of the craft. Thank you!
I have a Bouvier Des Flanders, long soft pretty faun. We have been saving her hair when we brush her. Only the soft under coat come out usually. We loads of 4 to 6 in hair. We have to brush her several times a week or she mats, since they don't really shed. I donate to any one interested.
so amazing thank you, I tried before and realized it is the carding that I was not doing right, I will try again. I have 2 huskies and 1 malamute, and plan to eventually have an entire team and doing some recreational mushing expeditions and always thought to myself that it would be so much warmer and useful to use dog hair to keep warm instead of synthetic materials.
I think u missed a major part there... How will I twist the whole thing once the stick reaches the spindles?? The whole rope shud be in a long length spinning on itself??
Wouldn't it be simpler to carve a smooth spindle, either support or a drop spindle (top whorl or bottom, either way -- see Abby Franquemont, "Respect the Spindle")? For plying, either use the "Andean plying" bracelet, a plying ball, or wind your singles onto paper quills (homemade, of course) and ply from a Lazy Kate (also homemade). Spinning is simple, and you can definitely stick spin, but you're making rather a meal of plying when there are simpler, faster methods known to handspinners.
+Andrea Winkler Hi Andrea, it most certainly would be simpler and you can check out our video on drop spindles here ua-cam.com/video/7rWofeP38zE/v-deo.html We have done this as a 3 part to show the progression of all the ways to spin wool, mostly we want to give options for those in different situations and also for learning purposes Thanks for watching!
show how to wash the dog hair. Do you wash before spinning or after? If you didn't wash it and used the twine in your garden would the smell deter rabbits and other garden destroying animals?
We haven't washed the dog hair, I'm sure you could, but we didn't and there is absolutely no smell to it. I'd say if you wash it you will need to add a bit of oil in the rinse. I'm not sure if the yarn would deter rabbits, maybe something to try out
