Hello friends!
Welcome to Part 2! This is very basic and useful for people who just want to have fun and enjoy themselves while doing something crafty.
If you haven't been brought here from my spinning packet, then welcome anyway! Hopefully this video will help anyone trying to learn to use a drop spindle in a very casual way.
**NEW WEBSITE!!: I finally made my own website for fiber art! No more Etsy! Yay!!***

My wife and I have watched like 3-4 other drop spinning video tutorials and every one of them seemed to have left out this VERY important step. Thank you for this video.
Very very helpful
For a total beginner thank you.
Thank you for this part 2, & the one before. I have two Alpacas, about 4 yrs of fleese. Was thinking about a spinning wheel. Living on a fixed income, spinning wheels, are expensive. Thanks for these two videos, (so far).
Your videos are excellent. You’re the first person I ever saw doing this. Thank you for showing how it’s done correctly. I love it and so does my wife Melissa!
This is a far more entertaining than a video about soaking and drying spun yarn has any right to be. Thanks again for rad content ^^
You are some great teacher. I think you could teach someone to fly a jet airliner. Maybe you should try.
Enjoyed your video much more than what I should have been doing now! Thank you for cutting the dead air for us, because it makes the video watchable.
For what it's worth, your wooden niddy noddy will not be harmed by a 15 minute soak in water. People used wood for thousands of years before polyurethane, and weather happens. Props for the PVC project though!
Wow your videos of drop spindle and the finishing part are very easy to follow. I think I can actually do it now. I struggled before so now I will re-attempt it. Thank you for sharing!
Best video, I’m glad I found you!
I love that your videos are a perfect blend of useful information, mild complaining ("I can't sit like that. It makes my feet hurt."), and odd sarcasm ("Ohhhh look at that it's under the waterrrr.") The blend is super entertaining and I'm more likely to remember what I learned because I enjoyed learning it. Now, to buy a drop spindle and make some yarn :) (*cough*intwomonthswhenihavemoney*cough*)
You are a very charming person and honestly, I felt a little bit like I was learning from a good friend. Great video
Love your sense of humor … plus: your videos are VERY helpful. Thank you.
Awesome! I'm am doing it. Your method worked better than some other method I was shown.
I love drop spindles too. Your videos are informative and you are fun and entertaining as well....many blessings.
You. Are a yarn-spinning rockstar. Because of you, there will now be a new class in my homeschool: Yarn-making - Booyah! (I will blame you, so if my teens hate it, well... I think you understand.)
+Robin Montoya Yaaaay! I am so on board with this! I will take the blame. ;)
Actually, I really think it's a great idea to teach this to the youngens. I've noticed that the coloring book craze is happening, both for kids and adults. Perhaps a drop spindle craze is next?
you make this seem son simple. loved this one also. Hopefully your making more. Thank you bunches. Blessings y'all
This was a great tutorial! Entertaining and humerous, informative too! You explained why you did what you were doing and also did a great job of clearly displaying the steps while keeping your fingers out of the way! Looking forward to watching more instructional videos from you!
Thank you!!! This part was a mystery to me until just now.
Yeay I made myself a niddy noddy from pvc based on watching your video and now am finally able to "cure" my yarn. I learned spinning about a week ago from a small local store in my area but have been piling up with yarn that needs to be finished and now I can. Now on to play around spinning bye Icelandic wool. This was a wonderful teaching aide
I just wanted to say thanks for making it understandable and feeling relatable. Also your hand dyed are gorgeous. Keep it up! ❤️
You are like the Jenna Marbles of yarn work and i love it.
+Katt “K-Shine” McSunshine Haha! Oh man, that's a big name to be compared to on the internet!
You're funny and informative! I have a bunch of white roving because I want to do some felting and figured I could dye bits of it whatever color I wanted as I go along. After I dyed a bit of it with food coloring (that experiment worked out well) I decided I wanted to also try some spinning (because why not) but had no idea how to actually do that, and now I do. Thanks!
Megan, I just love these videos. I am just beginning my “learn how to spin” quest.
Hi Megan. Thanks for the vids, very helpful! I plan on getting a drop and tryin my hand at spinning. So while I’m learning that, since you researched the hows n whys of yarn making.. i challenge you to go a step further.... go get you a couple of angora rabbits!! ( much easier to keep than sheep! 😁 ) I bet you will love those bunnies and love spinning even more after you harvest your very own wool ! Hugz !
Trying to learn drop spindle so thanks for posting your videos. I totally needed this one as I just spun my first single yarn on a club spindle and only knew I had to ply it ... As someone who is planning on making craft videos, I can say it's also helpful when making videos to have the ability to edit the videos to remove things like not having something ready....
Thank you for your informative and relaxed videos on making your own hand spun yarn. I've watched your series many times trying to make my own yarn. You took the scary out of the whole process and made me laugh along the way! Thank you!!!!!!!!!!
Super thumbs up 👍 Yay!!! Now I know how to yarn. All I need to do now is work out how to turn it into something I can wear lol
Darn it.... I think that might be harder 😆😂
Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I've been going out of my mind trying to figure out how to get the yarn off my spindle for the last few weeks because the kit I have has instructions for everything but that! So, I cannot thank you enough for this video!
Love your video's so much. You are so funny and clear. Hope you will post soon some more.
Thanks again Megan 😀
I just realised something really weird, the cottage where I live is on a 600yr old country estate and the cottage is called Spinners Cottage lol I think I was meant to find your videos and medieval spindle whorles and try this.. now I just need to make myself a spindle and niddy noddy lol
Great videos, got so much from them you are an excellent instructor.
Now I know why yarn is so expensive !
Forgive my simplicity in saying this, but:
THAT IS SUPER COOL!!!
Alright! I'm on to the next step! Thank you!
Thank You Megan, very helpful, and FUNNY
REP
Excellent !!!
Funny, informative, and exactly what I needed to know. Thank you.
thanks from France for your vidéo.
You are definitely a joy to watch lol 😂
Okay so this video is super informative and lovely, but also you are super entertaining and adorable. I hope you post a lot more videos, be it tutorials or vloggy things, because you got some youtube chops.
Keeroh Boom! Right on! Thanks for that! :)
I really need to make a schedule lol.
I wanted to add a comment but you said it perfectly!!!!
I'm six years late, but In just fell in love!
just wanted to say thank you for your videos. very informative, learned exactly what i wanted to. thank you again
+James Sullivan Thank you so much! I'm so glad it helped you! I've been getting such positive reactions from everyone - it's very warming! :)
Fantastic video! I am learning so much! I think I may be able to actually do this. :)
omg your humor is like mine "wow it's in the water that's amazing" said in a sarcastic laden sing-song tone
Your videos are so great. I subscribed!
Thanks! I’m spinning yarn so this was the next step I needed to know.
I enjoyed this video. I love a tutorial presented with a great sense of humor. The hanger trick is perfect, I will have to try that. :)
Thank you for the video (btw, I was also unpleasantly surprised by the time and work that goes into making a 7 minute video). Well done! And very useful: I didn't know about finishing the yarn (Oooops), that explains why my yarn fell apart a couple of times and kept shedding after knitting (super fluffy angora bunny hair), so I soaked the scarf I made in hot water, don't know yet how that will hold up....
Loved this tutorial and thanks for the giggles. :)
thank you so much for doing these videos. Where can I get the pvc pipe thing??? Yes, and it's fun to watch you doing things, even when you're complaining. :-D
You can make it with pvc pipe parts bought at a hardware store.
Hi, will you please do a tutorial on how to ply two singles together? Your tutorials are easy to follow and fun to watch. I am a new drop spinner who has spun a bunch of single ply yarn now want to make double ply yarn without having to get a lot of equipment. Maybe if I keep at it I'll get a lazy kate and all of that, but not as a beginner. Thanks, Megan!
Hi Peggy!
I certainly do have plans to do a video on plying! Until then, rest assured that you certainly don't need any extra equipment (although some of it will make things easier, I celebrate trying things out with as few tools as necessary.)
Thank you so much for the video. I have my first 2 English Angora bunnies and I am ready to spin 😁
You're fab! I'm gonna make yarn now, thanks. I actually needed a new reason to spend money! :D Seriously though I'm really excited! I just wanna say that sometimes youtube tutorials are excruciating and annoying to watch but yours are awesome! You remind me of Felicity from Arrow and she's one of my favvvvvorite characters. Thanks for the videos !
+Kristen Hollenbeck Oh man, Felicity! That's a new one and I'll GLADLY take it! Thank you!
I'm so glad you liked the tutorial! There will be more soon, promise! If you have any questions during your spinning journey, let me know! I'll do my best to answer them and frequently asked questions help me figure out what video to make next!
A freaking knot! So like I just spun for the first time going on a few video, I let go at the end of spinning and boom loads of untwisting. I was just looking how to stop it doing that and omg, a knot. Thankyou!!!!! Now to try again.
Vic Cartledge Haha! I'm glad I could help you! I've had plenty of those moments when learning to spin! Hope it's going better for you now!
MeganERiskTutorials sooo Much better thank you!
Love these videos thank you so much for all the info great tutorial!
I love how your just like "ugh... I'm too old to sit like this..." Lol
Thank you for making videos, they’re awesome! Love your energy! ❤️
your video was super helpful:)
Awesome video! Does the process you are teaching apply to all types of yarn? I am learning how to spin with angora (I have a bunny) and I just want to make sure that all the soaking and wacking, etc. is right for that fiber.
Hi i love my drop spindle i bought from you.
I genuinely feel like I was just taught this by Lorelai Gilmore.
HAHA!
yeah same!
I had the same feeling 😂
Same! :)
Omg I came to comments just to comment that and you beat me to to it 2 years ago!!!!
Great tutorial! thanks!! I would have a question: once the yarn is soaked and dry, do you dye it and then proceed with however want to use it?
thanks for your answer!
thanks for your effort
I bought a kit and have used your video to help learn. It is so fun. I wonder if I could used old yarn to add other textures to the yarn?
Oh yes! You absolutely can! In fact, it's commonly known as core spinning! I know of many yarn artists who use old yarn to create new and beautiful yarn with this method!
PS. I'm so glad you have had success using my videos! :)
you are totally a great teacher.
I have some crochet my grandmother did and because she did it when she couldn't see to well, there are bits of her hair in the crochet. do you ever get stray strands of your long hair in the yarn?
so funny! :-D but more importantly, informative. thank you!!
Awesome pretty teacher.
omg. you are hilarious! I enjoy your videos!!!
i love your personality!
Good Video. Thank You!
Not only are you informative but you're entertaining as well. Enjoyed it! Now where did I put my drop spindle?
C.S. Weaver can men do this with out humiliation from peers you think? I also secretly knit and love it. I am handicapped, can't drive,so I think it is safe hobby. But my family won 'tsar that Dad made it.. so....
@@bruce5066 Sounds like your family needs to grow up. Fiber crafts are for E V E R Y O N E. If you like it, do it!
thank you!
You make me laugh, oh, and the info is great too!
+Kathryn Missildine ;)
How do you find Angora (rabbit) yarn handling wise? I adore it but it is soooo expensive!
Nice technique.
Im super beginner, so im sorry if this is a dumb question, I was just wondering if you were to fill up the spindle more, could you wrap more on the pvc pipe contraption? Would you just have to put more figure 8 knots in?
Soo... In part one of this video thingy someone asked in the comments of you could use the same technique for spinning with silk hankies (you said yes by the way). Well now I am here to ask the same question. Do you process the finished silk yarn the same way you did in this video?
Elisabeth Plittman Hi Elisabeth! You mean is step 2 the same for silk as for wool?
I did a bit of searching and it was difficult to find techniques used by home and casual spinners, but I did find a lot of good information that could be modified to suit your needs.
This page (www.treenwaysilks.com/kc-spin.php), for example, has a great deal of information on silk spinning, a lot of which is followed by casual spinners as well as major spinners. The article mentions setting the silk twist by winding it around a block and steaming it (a lot of large animal fiber artists use the steam technique as apposed to soaking.) I'm not sure if soaking isn't recommended, but I can't imagine it would do any harm.
As far as thwacking, I'm not sure about that either. I wouldn't recommend it, since silk seems pretty delicate, but I am checking in with my more advanced silk spinning friends as I type this and will have more information about that very soon!
I'll get back to you ASAP!
Can you tell us how to make your pvc kniddy knoddy. Measurements, ect. Thank you!
Are you still doing the videos? Also what size pvc pipe for the middy noddy
I don't see a link to Your Etsy. Also is it the same method for Alpaca as is for Angora?
Do you do the same process for cotton??
??? The method of soaking in water, does that go for all types of fiber? I have wool and also cotton
When I wrung it out the way you did 99% of the water was gone. Also when I smacked it all the twists in the yarn sorta backed up on themself and I’m hanging it now
What if the wool is dyed multi colored? Will the hot water make the colors run???
would u do this same process with hemp fibers?
Thanks a bunch!
Why is my yarn loosing it's spin when I tie the knot? Is there a special way or something else I need to do?
I would say not to let go of the end of newly made yarn until you put it on the niddy noddy. It won't be able to unsuspend on the niddy Noddy and once you soak it, the twist will be set so that they don't come apart.
What happened to you I was looking forward to future videos. It's to bad you didn't make anymore.
Great vid
Would you do the same method for a yarn made of alpaca?
Would you do the same method for a yarn made with angora?
Hi Kimberly! I would only not thwack it as much (if at all), after it has soaked and I may not apply any weight while it hangs to dry (or only a very small amount.) Angora is much more delicate and can have a shorter staple length, which makes it easier to break. But I would still soak it and let it hang to dry.
Thanks for the reply!
is carding absolutely necessary?
Do you use a regular spinning wheel too?
I use a double treadle Ashford Kiwi 2!
do i need to soak it in the water? or not necessarily
If you're wondering if you need to soak it at all, I say yes. If the twist isn't set, then it will become a ball of nightmares.
Mainly it needs time to absorb the water completely, so soaking times can vary depending on the yarn itself which should be judged case by case. It's entirely possible the yarn only needs a minute or two, but I've had to let some particularly dense yarns of mine soak for about 30 minutes in warm water.
Some people use steamers for quicker setting, but I am not personally fond of that. My yarn comes out more balanced after I soak it.
No you do not *need* to soak it. In fact weavers specifically usually do NOT soak it prior to use. But if you are knitting, crocheting, tatting etc, it will make the yarn easier to use if you DO set the twist prior to use.
how much single ply similar to what you made can you get per pound of raw alpaca (many cultures spin it raw then wash it)
Any idea how to use a drop spindle that doesn’t have a notch or a hook or is there something wrong with the drop spindle I bought? 😅
When I tore off my yard it is all coming u done. How do I keep the twist. Was I twisting too thick of pieces? Help!
where can I buy the wooden one??
You are really pretty, I hope you continue being original.
Can you drop spindle two ply and so on?
So a drop spinner is way cheaper than a spinning wheel, but which gets the more consistant and soft yarn? I want to make a high quality yarn like you'd buy in a store, so I can make the best quality knitted goods as possible.
Get a spinning wheel for that. You need a lot of skill and practice to make consistent yarn from a drop spinner.
