Stem Rot in Jade Plant - Can I Rescue It?

- Опубліковано 2 сер 2020
- We found stem rot or root rot in our large Jade Plant and after inspecting it, it is almost all through the plant. Even with a bit of brown in the higher stem, we are attempting to save it. Wish us luck!

Thank you for posting this video. It really helped us save my mother's 25 year old plant. We followed your advice and today, six weeks on, the plant is healthy and has an incredible amount of new leaf formation. The plant, Magnus, meant a lot to us; and therefore, we're grateful to you for sharing your knowledge.
My main big plant did die but I do have some small cuttings that are pretty sizeable now.
Currently trying this method with a massive 30 year old jade tree I inherited. It had a 7" diameter trunk and weighed about 85lbs. I only found one branch that wasn't diseased and it's about 2" in diameter so I'm hoping this works. Thanks for posting
I hope it works for you.
Thanks for additional learning in how to rescue jade plants
Kim, I want to thank you for giving the confidence to do some drastic cutting on my 15 year old jade. Today, I took the time and cut off many branches that showed signs of brown rot. Upon inspection, I actually had a thick trunk that appeared to be healthy until I pressed an area on the tunk which squirted liquid from a previous cut I made. After I applied the pressure, a depression from that pressure remained on the trunk. I also noticed that the outwardmost branches had a different stem bark appearance, which I believe was the sign of the start of decay. So, if jade enthusiasts can't stand the thought of branch amputation, maybe the pressure/light squeeze test can be helpfu to determine just how aggressive the branch should be cut.
Oh thank you. Sounds like your jade may be in dire circumstances and I hope you can save it. Take some healthy cuttings and root them just in case you lose it, How horrible to lose such an old Jade. Good luck.
Good idea to plant it in gravels
If the plant is really rotted at the base I would say cut the best part of it off and try to get it to reroute at least then your fifteen-year-old plant continue to live on
My 35 year old jade plant has split in the middle like this and didn’t see it. With time the trunk rotted and had to chop the whole thing down. I was so sad, I blamed myself for not seeing it sooner 😢
So sorry to hear. It hurts to lose a big plant like that.
I'm dealikg with this right know. Wondering what happened after the month 🤔. Is there any second part of this video? I can't find it in your channel 😔 . Thank you so much for this video.
I’m interested too
Stones tend to hold moisture and likely will keep the soil from drying properly.. maybe in a place like Arizona, stones might be beneficial.
I will keep that in mind.
I have a very old Jade plant I have always took Cuttings off it I always take them off the plant and leave them in water till they produce roots and have always had success this way. If anyone would like some Cuttings or unrooted leaves feel free to comment
How do you save the cuttings. All my leaves fell.
@@luzm1039 how big is your plant mine is every established its more of a tree and will try and root itself so I just break them off and put them in water
@@melmskilemz6307 mine is the size of a hand. Very delicate
@@luzm1039 wait till it gets bigger where abouts in the world are you
@@melmskilemz6307 California. All the stems broke off so now I'm trying to propagate everything. So sad
Very interesting, I've been thinking about buying a jade plant. What should I look for in a healthy plant?
I would look for a sturdy stem and branches, glossy green leaves, and be sure to inspect for pests!
Try rooting it in vermiculite
Ive got the same thing going on. What has happened since you last updated?
As a matter of fact, it seems to be doing well and I have a video planned for tomorrow for you to see. Thanks so much for asking about it. Hopeful that she is recovered!
You need perlite. The rocks actually Hold moisture in.. and jade plants prefer like a dry sand dirt mixed soil. They're like succulents you need lots of drying time in between watering.
@@theveilofillusionhaslifted3610 she said that she’s trying to let it root first
I am currently dealing with this. My Jade is about 6 inches tall, yesterday. My plant was rotted And I had cut it up right above where the rot had reached. Right now I have the cutting just sitting out and letting the cut dry out. But I'm worried because the cut area doesn't look too good. Do you have any advice? The cut looks gross. Like the inside parts of the stem.
If you can trim it to fresh green insides, it should be fine. But any bit of darkness or streak means the rot is still there. I had tiny bit or dark and it rotted.
@@thehypertufagardener ok I just did this. I hope this works out. Now we wait for roots. I had to cut it all the way up to a branch.
may i ask how is the jade plant doing now?
The original Jade branches didn't make it, but I have cuttings that I have rooted earlier and they are about 5-6 inches high nowl. I think I will try a forest. I need to make a "bonsai" hypertufa pot.
I'm dealing with the same thing right now. I lost the majority of a very old plant and I am devastated. I save a few pieces and I've just given them the cinnamon treatment and am letting them dry out. I have a grow light, should I put the pieces under the grow light while they dry out?
I don't think they would need the grow light but it won't hurt. After a week or so, put them in soil and you should have some roots in a few weeks. If not then it is probably history. I hate losing a Jade!
Having the same problem 😞
how did it turn out? did it survive?
Only my cuttings survived, but they're pretty big now.
Once the plant is in the gravel, should it be watered?
I allowed water to run thru it but not to stand. It calloused well, but no roots. As you see in later videos, it didn't work in water either. Only some old tip cuttings rooted in soil to save my plant. The portion with root/stem rot just died off.
@@thehypertufagardener ok, thank you. I appreciate your response. Trying to save mine now. Have two pieces in gravel going on three weeks now. I sliced it back until I saw no indication of root rot. I’m not sure what else to do. I’m heartbroken. It was formally a very large plant😞
Where is the follow up video pls? Thanks
Sorry, didn't make another video.
Please tell us the outcome of the cinnamon treatment
In this case it didn't work. Lost the jade except for a few cuttings from the top.
If you go through all that why wouldn't you make sure everything was sterilized rocks ect.
I don't have my plants growing in a "sterile" atmosphere. So I feel that cleaning things is great but sterile wouldn't support all the good bacteria needed anyway. That gravel isn't the same as the gravel in the large original planter. That rock from the original planter went into a tray to go outside and get a bleach spray/rinse and laid in the sun for weeks. sorry for making it confusing.
Too much water! Need a smaller clay pot not ceramic. It will stay wet too long.
Thanks. She thrived for many years in a ceramic pot but yes, you have to be careful with water.
Ok but...can you show the results?
Most of the plant died, but I have a pretty nice clump of cuttings that are thriving. I will need to post a photo.
Thanks Obama...
Lol
