  • There has never been as much off-field activity at Aston Villa as there is right now. Having undergone 6 months of evaluation President of Business Operations Chris Heck is now in implementation mode with his newly assembled team. Pete the Canadian Villa fanatic, (who is as fascinated with the off-field stuff as the on-field action) sifts through the many TASTY NUGGETS revealed during a recent club video and Times article. Between the club crest, the new kit deal, a potential documentary series and the North Stand redevelopment project, we get clues about the club's direction over the coming years. Can Villa's on-field ambition be matched by the commercial endeavours off it? Pour yourself something fine, and maybe that question will become clearer!

I was in awe of their plans for a redeveloped North Stand and I will never forgive them if they scrapped it to move us out of our iconic, beautiful, spiritual home: the majestic Villa Park.

Aston isn't a safe place on non match days. I was set upon by a gang when I was younger on my first trip to the club shop. I've been followed and racially abused in recent times too. It's not a good place to visit when the locals are so hostile. It's not me being a gammin either, some of my best days were when I lived in Handsworth.
Villa Park is a grand cathedral of a football stadium but there's not much room for expansion because it's in such a built up area. It would be a sad day if we leave but I am for it. Just look at what Tottenhams new stadium has done for their revenue. If we can surpass the NEC for facilities, improve transport connections along with an increased capacity it would be a massive boon to our coffers.
If we redeveloped the North Stand and increased capacity to 50000 I can't see how we can expand any further in the future.
I'm fine with staying at our grand old stadium but I wouldn't be against a new stadium being developed elsewhere, I'd be quite excited and optimistic in fact.

@@jkmcgregor7797 I'll admit I'm unlucky when I go into Aston on non match daya. Being white really doesn't help which is strange because I've lived in ethnically diverse areas before and loved it. We could redevelop half the ground but we were told of a whole entertainment area. Where the hell will that go?

Moving stadiums is a terrible idea.
We would lose our soul, we'd lose our history and we'd (unbiasedly) lose the most beautiful ground in the Premier League.
There are things that we can do to increase capacity - like the original North stand redevelopment and that will work.
I'm sorry but moving stadiums from Villa Park is an absolute no go and I would never forgive them if they did that.
Where would we even go? To some bland open space in Solihull or somewhere that isn't even in Birmingham?
There is no room to do it anywhere else in the city.
If moving stadiums is what they want then they can leave.

The Euro minimum capacity comment, Pete, is I think incorrect. There will be a stadium in Belfast with barely 35,000, Hampden in Glasgow is 44,000. I believe the requirements for the ten grounds are
    1 stadium with 60,000 seats
    1 stadium (preferably 2) with 50,000 seats
    4 stadiums with 40,000 seats
    3 stadiums with 30,000 seats.
It may mean that Villa Park only has group games, but it won't be replaced. The UK and Ireland are way over the minimums.

I’m a bit torn on any talks of building a new stadium - yes, more seats/more revenue but new stadiums are totally soulless - especially when they name the stadium after their sponsor. I think pausing on the north stand rebuild was probably a good decision. The area can’t accommodate the crowds as is, adding more people would be a disaster. I went to a game in October - raced to Witton right when the game ended and still had to wait like 50 minutes for a train (The last game I went to was 10 years prior and I definitely don’t recall waiting that long). All this talk of Heck catering to “plastic” fans is such bs…. Birmingham isn’t exactly a must see spot on the tourist trail in England. Only true fans will travel to see a game. It’s super expensive for overseas folks to get to Birmingham … at least Manchester and London have cheap and frequent flights.

I'm not saying that English Football isn't about money because that would be ridiculous..BUT it's much more cultural than commercial compared to many US sports are. It's a big boat to turn around in that area. And I don't think the English fanbase on the whole is ready for the kinda of "heritage games" and other such enterprises which many will just view as a gimmick right off the bat.

I don't actually want to support the next big 6 club, the idea of commercialisation of the nostalgia and history of English football repulses me. I want to support a club that is fan-led, sporting success to me is secondary to that.

Some people will agree and some won't but all I know is AV ownership need to make smart, long term business decisions to make the Club grow into a top 6 club or the Club is in trouble. If you can put 60,000 plus people in a stadium every game and be in the Champions league the Giants of the Midlands are truly that.....Giants! Decisions by listening to fans and their personal opinions is foolish. AV owners are very smart people and the executive team they have are all world class people.....lets have some fun and sit back and enjoy what they create.

-Some of the anti-american sentiment is borne of the fallout from Lerner. He may have meant well but Villa dissolved and have only just recovered. People are aware of the cut throat nature of US sports where they seem happy to move teams to another city, etc. Villa are the antithesis to that, our identity is who we are. That may be 'uneducated noise' and I apologise for that but I stand for what Villa's history makes the club, not what our potential income could be on a spreadsheet, etc. The communication from the club and Heck has been very poor and has left room for interpretation which is probably part of the problem. Rather than putting the hold on the North Stand redevelopment, they should have told us what they are aiming for instead. That would bring the fans alongside straight away. It was similar with the badge situation too. The new badge doesn't even seem to satisfy the FA's rules on fan consultation - just someone wading in with their size10s making decisions in a rapid fire way. There's a sense of taking the fans for idiots in all this. But hey, he has the Business degrees right.
-The new stadium is a bold step for Villa. Very few stadia can boast what Villa Park has historically. Maybe we are mired in the past but that's our footballing CV, it's who we are. Moving would be a big, big step and sadly I feel would kill that old traditional Villa. Is it truly impossible for us to remain the same club as we try to move forwards and compete?

The profile of the club is up, the reputation of the city is up and ultimately he has said the inferstructure is just not there in Aston! I've said it for a while, a move is on the cards and don't forget we have the HS2 down to the smoke!

Great video Pete 👍 I grew up in Victoria road Aston and been going down for 50 of my 56 years.
I think if we moved it would probably never quite feel the same again because of the history and memories.
Having said that Aston is a shit hole, Birmingham city council haven't got a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of, they are officially bankrupt.
The problem is space there just isn't any, it is all residential one side and Aston hall the other so nothing doing there.
I think the North stand has been put on hold because its not enough for what the club want to achieve long term, so if a new stadium is needed to make us compete with the big clubs financially and commercially then we have to do it. UTV

Pete I'm sorry but what are you talking about?
I dont mean to be rude but you've been to Villa Park twice...
You're not speaking on behalf of Villa fans that have been going to this stadium for the whole of their lives - who have families that have been going to this stadium for generations.
Yes there are improvements that can be made - but they can easily be made.
I know the surrounding area is a shithole now but that's where Villa have to get onto the council to get them to clear up the streets. Easily done if we're hosting the euros and the whole world is coming there.
Don't be blinded by shiny new things just because we've been performing really well for a year.
If we leave Villa Park that will be the end of us as a proper club.
I'm not willing to throw away all that history so that we can appease some new plastic fans and an American that's too scared to drive round Birmingham.

As an ex Brummie (now living elsewhere) brought up at Villa Park and going there for over 50 years, yours is the best comment on this topic. The North Stand and Doug Ellis should be developed together stage 1 and 2 as previously proposed but Heck may be right re. the timing.
Pete - as someone who lived previously in Tsawwassen and frequented BC Place many times you're right about the amenities etc and yes the area surrounding VP is a shithole but the main issue of transport via Witton and Aston stations can be sorted with the right approach. Moving out to the NEC area may be on the cards for all we know but I want to stay and improve the infrascture and surroundings.

“Greatest year in our history without winning anything”?? Ok, it was a good calendar year, but football is based on the results of a season and in my lifetime we’ve finished 6th at on 7 occasions , 5th, 4th (twice , but granted we also won the league cup on both those occasions) as well as runners up twice. That’s more important to me than saving a crappy season then starting the next campaign well.

Great cast as always Pete. A lot of noise around FFP and PL Sustainability rules at the moment. As you have alluded to, this is about business and commerciality verses sentiment and history.
Unless Villa develop their commercial side, and increase the spend per fan at Villa Oark similar to how Spurs did, we are really going to struggle to maintain a challenge to the Champions League spots which is where the money is.
If we largely remain as we are, we will not be able to buy 2 or 3 quality players each summer window at £40m+.
Villa Park, a romantic (football wise), stadium but it is struggling to be fit for purpose, hence match day revenue is so poor and supporters largely turn up shortly before kick off and leave on the final whistle. Let alone the transport links…..
Reality is we need progress our business side and massively increase our revenue, and not be sentimental.
In that basis, Chris Heck is the right man.

The measure of a good owner / Leader is by what they leave for the person that follows them. If the Ground is not extended then yes our Owners alongside Heck will have failed that test. We all know why Heck has delayed the new stand. He wants to drive up the prices we pay that's why he has introduced the corporate or premium experiences as he would describe them to the Holte End. The owners and Heck should understand they can do what they like corporate wise on three sides of the ground but the Holte End should be a democratic equalitarian affordable space.
It is interesting that Tottenham a smaller club than Villa will have a £300 million advantage on us if the ground its delayed three years.

The potential 'bang for buck' revenue growth is by tapping into the global market based on the support players like Emi Martinez bring in Argentina. Almost every South Korean is a spurs fan. @Sprawlsy 4 місяці тому

Hi Pete, interesting video! I disagree with some of your points, I'll explain why. I think the commercial comparison between us & various US sports is way off. In all those sports it's a closed shop, you can't drift down multiple divisions never to be seen again or have to compete with countless other leagues in other countries.
I think the importance of our brand identity is massively overplayed, we compete in the league with the biggest global brand. Even if we're 'not big' we play 12 games against the Sky 6, it's impossible not to get exposure. How do we grow our brand, we need to win trophies. No more, no less. Of the Sky 6, only Spurs haven't won anything in recent times, but they're based in London, have had Harry Kane (massive marketing tool) & Son pulls in massive S.Korean interest too.
Commercially Villa are awful. The match day food offering is awful & expensive, so I bring my own. The merch....generally poor, the last time I bought a shirt I had to go through about 3 rows to find one where the finish was to normal high street standards. My wife bought me the 80/81 white away shirt (online store) for Christmas. Great she thought, 100% cotton like the European Cup shirt....wrong, awful, thin nylon. She got a full refund, they didn't want it returned & it's still falsely shwing as 100% cotton online.
It's people like me they should be looking to empty my wallet every match (season ticket since 90s), make me want to buy food & drink because it's decent & convenient, make my lad want to go to the shop every match & plead with me for gear & what not. Massive untapped revenues that they just won't unleash unless they buck their ideas up.
As for Heck flak, this next criticism predates his arrival, communication, communication, communication. It's crap! People looking to renew only to find their seats have been removed for disability seating. No issue with catering better for the disabled, but tell the affected people in good time. Add to that removing access to the Holte Suite (I didn't use it) etc. you can see why people's backs have been put up.

For the first time since NSWE took over I felt badly let down by the shelving of the redevelopment, too much doesn't make any sense but they have enough good will in the tank with the fans that a bit of grumbling from some is all that'll happen.
As much as I love Villa Park I've been going since before the North Stand was built in the 70s so none of it is the Villa Park I first knew, if a new stadium in a better location is needed then so be it but please don't make some soulless bowl, build with red brick and stained glass as a nod to what made Villa Park such an iconic stadium, its a huge part of our heritage and it shouldn't be sacrificed.

If we want to compete commercially and therefore on the pitch moving to a new 60,000 stadium is one option the board and owners need to consider. Our current commercial revenue is 10% of Man Utd’s. That is a gap that cannot be bridged easily, even partially.

I can see a new stadium on the same site with doing CPO’s on the housing behind the trinity, north and Witton lane stands.
Then build a new stadium, you could use the Alex stadium with temporary seats to raise capacity while construction goes on.
Villa park as it is will become a serious problem with the revenue intake if we want to compete then we have to grow, I have fond memories down there. But sometimes you have to let go of the past.
I want to see Aston Villa complete in the big competitions but to do that you have to change the way of thinking and our owners will want to see a return on their investment

As much as I love VP the surrounding area is a dump and unless they're going to demolish an regenerate the entire area I think for the long term a move to somewhere more suitable could be huge for the future of the club. The current stadium isn't really the stadium I fell in love with anyway. That disappeared when Doug demolished the Trinity. The Holte was better before all seater stadiums came in and the North stand is the only survivor from my first visit and that's awful. I would build it at the NEC surrounded by hotels and other things for visitors to do so it's a destination venue. It would have to be amazing though, not a boring modern bowl.

I'm not sure why people think the NEC is the golden ticket site (for the record I never want us to leave VP). All driving fans in South Birmingham & South or West of Birmingham (Redditch, Droitwich, Worcester, Bromsgrove, Kiddy, Stourbridge etc.) would have to go M42 South, throw in the usual heavy traffic on the M42 & it's utter madness. Currently I can go M6, M5 or Handsworth M5 or through the city centre & head south or M6, M42....all those options reduced to one?!
Public transport....currently people can get bus, train, taxi or walk to the city centre (circa 4 miles) & then onwards. Compare that to relying on a train from International, especially with concert/event crowds from Resort World too. You're going to need a lot of tourist fans to replace alienated bread & butter fans.

@@Sprawlsy Many Villa fans live North of Birmingham too. It's the same journey time but much better parking etc. You have a way better match day experience somewhere like with the facilites adjacent and still drive away without the huge bottlenecks afterwards. Also you need tourist fans if you want to compete with the big boys so being near an airport and hotels is a big plus. I think big stadiums are better when they are out of town.

    • @Sprawlsy
      @Sprawlsy 4 місяці тому

@royaltyfreemusiccollective8662 You must have misread my reply as I explained a huge potential post-match bottleneck for those going south, presumably the same for those going north. I've parked at Wembley & the Reebok Stadium, again, like any similar venue, massive bottleneck to get out.
You don't need a huge stadium to compete, you need to consistently win trophies & finish top 4 to generate the TV & commercial income.
People moan about the atmosphere at VP now, imagine what it would be like with day trippers who expect everyone else to put on a show for them, but a large percentage of others there will be day trippers too. If we ever become a theme park club I'm afraid I'll have to call time on it all. Awful Americanisation scenario of English football.

It's either that he doesn't think the North Stand redevelopment got enough bang for their buck, so he wants something far bigger that won't cost much more, or they are seriously looking at a greenfield site. Some of Fabrizio Romano's concept designs for a retro Victorian 60+K new stadium for Villa could be pretty awesome. Bloody hell Pete, I love your vids but some of your observations on this was one were terrible “Young people don’t like the round badge but they didn’t vote against it because young people don’t vote” WTF? Yes, I’m prepared to criticise the owners on the way they’ve handled the north stand redevelopment, the Aston lower grounds and the villa terrace. The argument that brits are cynical about North America’s is not true. We judge people on their actions. Lying to the core ‘customer’ [fan] base is shit, whether to a Brit , North American or outer Mongolian. Constructive criticism is not negatively, it’s critical appraisal - look it up when studying your masters in sports business. By the way, how did you get on on your masters when stating “I believe…, I have nothing to back this up..”?Define how American sports outperform the EPL? Financially, won’t argue but popularity around the globe? Football is based on promotion and relegation (glory and jeopardy) not franchises and the malaise associated with North America sports. If American sports is in such a great situation, why are so many North Americans involved in British football? 1) because they get it’s a better ‘product’ or 2) to make a quick few quid. If it’s 1) then respect what has made the EPL such a success. If it’s 2) then they don’t deserve fans loyalty anyway.
Fans can have their say, and they are saying it- many of the tier 1 games aren’t selling out until the last few days due to the ridiculous prices in certain sections of the ground considering the mostly appalling facilities inside VP and dreadful transport issues outside the ground. I appreciate you’ve only seen the corporate side of a game at VP. Try going for a piss in the north stand at half time, or getting a pint in the concourse of the upper witton…
