If this guy started the call " My ex ran up my credit cards, what can I do about it" the call would have gone in a different direction. Instead he starts the call "I'm in debt but its someone else's fault". And the excuses come pouring out. Also how can you be a healthy single adult in America and make only 45 grand ? Dave was absolutely right. Tell this guy to get off is behind, start making some coin and pay his debt.
