  • This is a quick reference for removing the fairing and headlight shroud from my 2017 Honda Africa Twin (CRF1000L) motorcycle. This is necessary for doing a number of maintenance activities on the motorcycle, including air filter replacement, 12V wiring, access to the headlight, etc. The intent is to provide a quick guide on what needs to be done, in sequence, to efficiently get the bike plastics off. It is not intended to be an depth tutorial, so if you have more detailed questions, let me know in the comments and I'll respond asap.
    Tools required:
    - Allen Tools/Hex Keys: 3mm, 4mm, and 5mm
    - Pick or Philips head screw driver (for push pins)
    - Flat head screw driver (for push pins)
(sadly, none of these tools come in the Africa Twin tool bag)

Thanks. I often find myself looking for the shortest videos for these types of things (and watching them at double speed). So figured I could put that to practice.

Thank you. Busted my right turn signal so this video will help a lot for replacing it. I appreciate the in-depth video.

Awesome! I'm glad it helped. I was tired of skipping through the long videos, and wanted a quick reference. Glad it was detailed enuff.

I cant believe there isn't 50 more videos out there showing how to do this on an AT. So thank you. That said, wish you showed the actual switched accessory plugin and location. I'm guessing it was by the left turn signal area. Looking to dig into that to find what connector is needed for a gps power connector.

I have another video for that! See ua-cam.com/video/oMA8bFbM11Q/v-deo.html
Starting at the 10 minute mark. I'm focused on the high beam switch, but it also covers the function of each wire in the oem accessory connector (which includes switched 12v).

Appreciate this! Made taking the right side off to do a coolant change much easier than it would have been otherwise.

Thanks… I’m at this point right now…. A little bit afraid to get it together again 😅…. Some peanut has connected the TomTom wire behind all this with my bike instead of going simple to the saddle with a thunderbox wire system…

Once you've done it a couple times, it's actually pretty easy and intuitive.

Excellent video! I wish Honda made it easier to get the fairings off.

Hi! This is exactly what I was looking for to dig in and start making some electrical additions to my bike. Now I can (probably) get it apart, how do you know what wires are available to splice into? I'm planning on running a whole separate fuse box but it would still be incredibly useful to have something that goes hot when the bike is running.

OEM accessory socket under the pillion seat or behind the headlight.
See part one and part two if these posts. I highly recommend the kit from Eastern beaver (part 1) but if you want to DIY then the wiring for the OEM accessory socket is shown in part 2.

@@PointsUnknownTV "So the best thing to do is use the existing 12V key switched wires to provide a signal to a relay, and have the relay be the main “switch” between your bikes battery and your powered accessories." Yep, exactly what I wanted to be doing. Thanks for the response!

Hi. Yesterday I had a low speed rear ending collision. Ending my front fairings almost all damaged. Also the glass of the headlight. Any advise on that part? Is is possible to just replace the glass?

I'm not sure. Sorry, but I've only modified the wiring behind the fairing. Haven't had to do a headlight replacement.. yet.

Is there a way to replace my 2023 african twin headlights with the older round headlights from the 90s and 2000s?

No idea. That's beyond my skills or expertise.
