      well after all that I thought it was working properly but after trying it this morning it just constantly crashed and lags by about 15 seconds. I do get a notification on my phone when there's motion but when I start the trigger it doesn't turn my lights off. I'm giving up I guess it's just not going to work thanks tho Paul xx

    Hi Paul, another great video and well described as usual. One issue I noticed, the request to send the lights off command from Maker to RM Plugin is via HTTP (only option it currently supports), this means your username and password will be sent over the Internet in plain text (not encrypted) and therefore it may be possible for somebody on the Internet to capture your credentials, which is not a good thing. I think it should be pointed out in the video that this is a dangerous thing to do.
    At the *very* least make sure these credentials are not used for anything else, such as email, banking, etc, or you may find your home security system was the reason your bank account got emptied out.
    It would also be worth getting in touch with the developers of RM Plugin and request they add the option to use HTTPS which will ensure your credentials are sent encrypted and safely.

    • @paulhibbert
      @paulhibbert  7 років тому

      Alan Makin thanks Alan! I didn't realise they could be intercepted.
      Unfortunately youtube doesn't let you add annotations to the video anymore if you use their new end cards system, but I will add this in the description.
      Do you know how someone might be able to intercept the details? I don't doubt that it's possible, I'm just curious as to how they do it.
      Thanks,
      -P

    • @shakeymakin
      @shakeymakin 7 років тому

      The easiest place for somebody to try and intercept your credentials would be by connecting to your home network (which could be easy or difficult depending if they already have access to your router ports or wifi) and then use either a 'sniffing' tool to capture all traffic on the network (see Wireshark), or set up a 'man-in-the-middle' attack, which will intercept only traffic between your router and the RM Plugin app (see tools such as Cain and Able or Ettercap).
      On a side note, if you've not changed you wireless password/access code from the one provided by Virgin it is possible to attempt what is called a 'brute-force' attack against it, ISPs tend to use a standard format for their passwords (My BT router looked like it was created with just hexadecimal numbers, 0-9 & a-f, for example), it's not difficult to set up a rule to try every combination of letters and numbers until to password is cracked, just may take a bit of time. All the tools to do this are freely available off the Internet. I recommend trying it as a future project, on an unused router that you own of course :)
      It is more difficult to intercept your password from the Internet. For a man-in-the-middle the attacker would need to be connected to the same network as your ISP or IFTTT, not impossible but less likely and doubt anyone would be doing that just to get your details.
      You also have to keep in mind those credentials will also pass through the equipment of all the different layers of the Internet between IFTTT and your home, for me that is between 10 and 19 devices on the Internet alone. Again the chances of somebody getting your credentials from here, realising they belong to you and gaining access to your systems is very slim, but it is still a risk.

      Peter Frost thanks mate. Yeah, some of them are a big job. It often spirals out of control because I get carried away once I have an idea in my head. I've gotten really quick if I really go at it, but this one was probably a good 12 hours work as it has quite a bit of animation. It's usually if I decide to do something I haven't done before it takes a long time as it takes a while to figure out how to make it look right, but I'm getting faster :)

    Thanks again for your clear tutorial. Just a quick question. Does the app (Manything) need to be running constantly and in front on the tablet? Or can it run in the background whilst the tablet is locked and screen is turned off (to save battery) and be triggered to wake the screen up on motion ?

    • @paulhibbert
      @paulhibbert  7 років тому +1

      +DoNCaLiTrI Hi mate, Manything needs to be running and in the foreground, but it dims the screen to as low as it will go to save on battery and screen life.
      You could probably use tasker to launch Manything when required :)
      Another option is you can follow this same guide with Ivideon in place of Manything and use any IP camera instead.
      Thanks,

    hey Paul, this is a great source. I have built something similar to this in my place. just an update, I believe that service on ifttt is no longer called "maker", they have changed it to "webhooks". if anyone is looking for a "maker" service on ifttt, don't. or they removed maker and created webhooks, idk. i am using Autoremote plug-in for tasker to have tasker communicate with ifttt. and there is something that i don't really get, there is one dislike for this video. come'n, are you serious dude? do something better than this then.

      My tutorials are always screen grabbed on my mobile, but it's actually my tablet that I use in real life and the tablet is still on the older version so I had no idea stuff was broken!
      It seems that all my Alexa devices in the RM plugin had forgotten their commands. I just tried adding the commands back in to one of them which fixed that one. Hopefully the developer will get it fixed quickly so we don't all have to re-add all our devices!

    • @paulhibbert
      @paulhibbert  7 років тому

      spudz72 I wanted to create a home alarm system that lived through one tablet and the cloud. Nothing else. This is a good way of achieving that. Ultimately I'll tinker until it's something totally different for my own needs I'm sure. :)

    • @WingAddict
      @WingAddict 7 років тому

      Ah. Make sense. I actually want to use my tablet or a spare phone as well, just don't want to pay for cloud recording. It looks like from what I can see Ivideon is only for use with external cameras or ip cameras etc. So that is likely why you didn't use it? So I guess an app for what I need doesn't likely exists. I either have to pay for Manything to record to the cloud or use Ivideon with external cameras.

Been using the Broadlink for a few weeks now LOVE IT, though id give the HTTP bridge thing a go, trying to use it with NFC Tags & NFC Pro apparently that can send the same kind of HTTP requests? i have forward router ports as detailed in the RM Plugin, set a user and password but when i try to open the page to get to the API information its not having any of it i get (this page isnt working) ? any ideas what ive done or doing wrong. the RM Plugin is on an android phone with a static IP. Thanks hope you can help. sonny

    • @paulhibbert
      @paulhibbert  7 років тому

      +Sonny Gallagher are you able to visit the RM plugins internal HTTP address from a PC to see the command list? It will be in the RM plugins settings and will probably be something like 192.168.0.4:9876

    • @sonny1977
      @sonny1977 7 років тому

      No cannot access it, made sure it was typing in the correct ip address and port, (even tried changing the port number incase that was the problem). I was going to see if i could just copy what you had entered but then though if mine wont display there must be a problem and simply copying the code probably wouldnt work.

    • @paulhibbert
      @paulhibbert  7 років тому

      Sonny Gallagher I assume the android device and PC are both connected to the router via WiFi? The Android device isn't connected via mobile Internet like 4G?

    • @sonny1977
      @sonny1977 7 років тому

      yes thats right, the pc and mobile are connected to the same router, the pc is on ethernet but tried unplugging it and having it connect to the same wifi network but still nothing, continue to get "This page isn’t working 192.168.1.221 didn’t send any data.
      ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE

    • @paulhibbert
      @paulhibbert  7 років тому

      Sonny Gallagher try rebooting the android device. Try unticking the HTTP option in the RM plugin and reticking it. Try changing the port number to something else and visit it on the new port number.
      If all that fails, I have to presume your routers firewall is blocking access so might be worth having a poke around in there.

      I did ;) hahaha. It still works as far as I'm aware. I've not used it for a while, but to my knowledge IFTTT hasn't changed in any way and the Manything app still works the same way too.
