  • Here is a quick video about how to mount the lower unit back to the upper unit of a mercruiser Alpha 1 Gen 1 outdrive. If you do this wrong the boat WILL NOT shift into gear. The key is to make sure the engine is OFF and the throttle is all the way FORWARD.

Just wanted to say thanks! I spent a day and a half trying to remember how to reassemble my alpha one after doing the water pump. It’s been a lot of years, and I forgot the step of putting it in gear up at the controls and on the drive. As soon as I did that it was all good! Got to drive together shifted in and out of neutral forward and reverse with no problems first try! Thanks again!!!

Dude! I just about lost my composure trying to remount my lower unit. It came off so easy - it's a fairly simple event. I could not figure out what I'd missed. I even compared my old lower to the new, thinking I might have grabbed the wrong generation - although I knew that was nearly impossible given what was sitting in front of me. This little no-nonsense video preserved what's left of my sanity. Thank you!

I've done these before, but not in about 10 years. I had a problem getting the lower unit back on that last 1/2 inch. I watched several videos by so called experts and NO ONE covered it like you did. As soon as I saw you go underneath with the little clamp it all came back to me. Thanks for the great job on this video.

Thanks for watching. I don't know if I mentioned in the video that I had to think about it overnight to come up with that idea.🤦‍♂️

Best in depth video on shifting issues after impeller changes. Great job.

Man than you so much! After two hours of fighting with lower unit I was defeated and then watched the first 75 seconds of your video, I paused it and got it on almost instantly 🎉 😅

I just mounted mine yesterday. I had the problem getting the last inch or so too. I got on the ground, used my leg to hold it and help guide it up. All i had to do was keep upward pressure while spinning the propeller clockwise and it eventually popped up the rest of the way. As the shift spline makes contact with its hole you just have to make sure when it starts pushing up the little foot is lined up. I can be done with out clipping or bungee-ing anything. You just have to make sure everything is lining up while spinning the prop counter clockwise. Also be sure the shifter is all the way forward before removal and leave it then until its reinstalled

Good video, especially the tip about clamping the shift into the horseshoe. But why is it necessary for the outdrive to be level when removing or reattaching the lower unit? I've replaced the impeller many times on my 1987 Alpha One. With the the boat on a low trailer with the outdrive level, the lower unit is on the floor while the driveshaft is still inside the upper unit cavity, requiring tilting of the lower unit to fully remove it, as well as positioning it for reinstallation - while working from an awkward position on the floor. With the outdrive up it's far easier to physically handle and maneuver the lower unit from behind, especially if working alone. I also remove the prop nut, then then slide the prop after positioning the gears. It takes only a few minutes and makes it almost impossible to move the prop shaft out of position while reinstalling the lower unit.

Thanks buddy I’ve been having the same problem! Unfortunately I thought it bad to be locked going Clockwise because it’s going in forward gear. wtf I had it up and in place and took it back off 😡😡 I don’t have the stern drive back to the level position. Are You Sure it has to be down to a level position?

Yes it does. If the drive isn't lowered the shift cable won't be in the correct position and the interrupter switch won't engage once everything is reassembled.

Just a suggestion, if you hold your phone sideways you get a full screen video instead of 1/3 screen in the middle..
