When we knew Atarashii Gakkou would be in the radio show everyone went crazy thinking of how it would be having both Suzuka from BM and Suzuka from AG talking in the same room. And it did not disappoint, the fact that she called herself Su Metal was hilarious.
Be sure to check more Atarashii Gakkou stuff, they’re so different to anything you’ve reacted on the channel, but they’re so cool.
Suzuka is the one with glasses.
Kanon is the one with long straight hair.

I was at Countdown Japan 2024, a multi-day end-of-the-year fest, checking out the Earth Stage, featuring Shishamo, Man with a Mission, and MtH, and during MtH's set AG, who were on another stage, came over and collabed with MtH on this song. It was pretty much like the vdo. Btw, a MtH show is the only time I've been hurt in a mosh pit--got clunked on the head by a guy doing cartwheels (never fully recovered).

great reaction! the lady at the end, wearing the kimono, was Maximum the Hormone's drummer :)
AG do their own choreos, and they deviate from typical female-group styles. instead, their dancing tends to be more aggressive, quirky, and even a bit masculine. they have previously done choreos for other groups as well! if you want to get to know them more, I think a great introduction video is their performance of their song Otonablue at The First Take (a channel were artists have to perform a song in a single take, no retakes, cuts or rehearsals). they do all sorts of genres, and their music is usually very experimental, which makes them sound extra weird and quircky (in the best way).
their topics are usually about analyzing japanese culture, whether by celebrating the good or by criticizing the bad, while also combining comedic elements w serious topics. their whole motto is being able to stand out even within the confines of society (as japan has a very closed-minded culture), hence their uniforms yet completely rebellious attitudes. i'd recommend songs like GiriGiri (choreo video), Koi Geba, and Night Before the Exam (also choreo video)
looking forward to another reaction from you!

Suzuka is bird from another feather. Never afraid to be silly or even naughty. The latest US tour, she would literally get out amongst the crowd, climb balconies, and take her socks and shoes off and throw them and people. The fact that they made it BIG without following the traditional idol group method makes them one of a kind. And as a true blue metal head, I absolutely DIG these girls. If they actually do a combined US tour, I will empty my bank account to see as many shows possible

Something I learned as a result of Babymetal's Metaraji is that Atarashii Gakko! has two different names. Outside of Japan they are, clearly, "Atarashii Gakko!" but in Japan, and amongst Japanese speakers they are 新しい学校のリーダーズ "Atarashii Gakko no Leaders" (Leaders of the New School or New School Leaders)
Am guessing that is because the term New School is a bit too generic and might lead to confusion based on... well New School is a fairly common phrase. Outside Japan, in Japanese, the term is unique enough.
That is why Su-metal and the girls called them Leaders (in English, hence the katakana) in the interviews.

I was looking forward to this. I knew you would get here eventually 🥃 Even being a huge BABYMETAL fan, to me this was the collab of the year over Ratatata.
Apparently being named Suzuka gives you extra points in great voice and general badassery. Even tho the AG's Suzuka is in many aspects the opposite to Su-Metal: spontaneous, free, sassy, irreverent, sarcastic, she's another force of nature on her own right.

Shimi (Stain) is a track from 2007 (Original is fire) and the AG girls fit into it seamlessly. The MV is incrediibe. Japanese symbolism, industrial, post-apocalyptic, even some Japanese horror movie vibes. MTH are legends in Japan. Yes, Hanabie was heavily influenced by them and the drummers from Nemophila (Tamu) and Band-Maid (Akane) were inflienced by MTH's female drummer (Nao) that women could be drummers. Nao was the last solo singer in the MV. Bassist Wakazaemon, of Koiai and tours with Marty Friedman started out in a MTH franchise band as well.

Before the show started, they played this MV for the crowd... was super loud. My daughter introduced me to AG, she also bought the tickets for the show. She was paying me back for taking her to Band Maid and Babymetal. As a metal head in his 50's, the AG show was a blast... never thought I'd enjoy a show that didn't have a band. Atarashii Gakko were also teenage idols but they left/were dropped by (I forget the exact thing that I read in interviews) their agency and decided to keep going as a group under their own steam. I think this is one of the reasons BM were so interested in asking them questions, because they have similar roots but followed the opposite path of not having a big company backing them and someone like Kobametal producing them, and so have had a very different and much more independent career trajectory. Ultimately though they understand relying on each other for a long time and having a close bond as a group.

Such a great song. When you go down the Atarashii Gakko path a lot of people are gonna be throwing out Otona Blue or Tokyo Calling which are great songs but I really think you should start with Change. It has a style that is 100% AG! and kinda matches the spirit of Shimi. The only way to really describe it is Hard Pop but even that doesn't quite capture it. Baby metal had 1 & 2 slots with Electric Callboy, F Hero and Bodyslam, until this came in at the end of the year total TUNE. 3 versions of this song Shimi. MTH original version (2017ish I think, correct me if wrong). Then 2 versions with AG (2024). This video (Rins rap), and hard copy only (No Rins rap). Great stuff as always Shade.

For some reason, MTH reminds me of Mr. Bungle with their craziness and really odd sense of humor. AG! fits in well with them. They strike me as what would happen if you took the traditional Japanese idol band, but as opposed to the hot, popular girls, you filled it with the sassy, smart drama kids (who are also amazing dancers and singers). AG! is best described as alternative JPop. Their personality is punk as f*ck and is very refreshing. MtH has lots of very strange songs (in a good way), but Maximum II and A-L-I-E-N are both insane. Once you start getting into MtH, you start to recognize that Nao is a metal goddess. She uses such a small kit (at least for a metal drummer), and she destroys it. Plus, she is not afraid of doing really silly/hilarious things to bring out the MtH humor.

They toured the US and performed at Coachella and was the closing group. Fun Fact - They had members of the USC Trojan Marching band as their backing band. Pretty much all of their concerts were sold-out and were the stars at the festivals. Suzuka has no fear went straight into the audiences.

AG fans have a hard time accepting that there are 2 distinct sides to the Fandom. One side comes from a pop background and they love OtanaBlue and think the whole world will be changed if they just hear that creepy ass song.

Shimi is an old MTH song that has been reworked to include the singing and dancing of Atarashii Gakko. The groups have different musical styles, but both are iconoclasts making it a great collaboration. Also the melodic parts were originally sung by MTH's drummer, Nao, so having AG! sing them sounds right and Nao still gets to sing the final melodic part. Mizyu's "shamisen bit" is a great intro to Rin's rap and AG!'s dance background makes for some epic headbanging. All the members of AG! sing and dance, but Suzuka's strong voice and stage personality means that she usually takes the lead with Rin rapping and Mizyu and Kanon doing the more melodic parts. I'll leave the MTH fans to go into more detail about them, but they are iconic in Japan and you already know they have inspired many bands.
Atarashii Gakko were formed in 2015 by Asobisystem. The members are Mizyu, Suzuka, Rin and Kanon. Mizyu had worked with Asobisystem before as a back up dancer to Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and I think the agency was looking for a follow on to KPP and Tempura Kids, but AG! seem to have wanted to do something different and so were left to develop in their own direction. They do all their own choreography, write a lot of the lyrics and work with producers on the songs and seem to have a lot of artistic freedom. AG!'s dancing is a highlight for me as they've developed their own unique style so it really stands out from the dancing you usually see. The live shows are performed with a lot of joy with Suzuka often jumping into the audience and crowd surfing. Their irreverent attitude and early jazz influenced songs didn't have much success in Japan and they were dropped by their record label in 2019. They were quickly signed by the US label 88Rising and produced an EP with Money Mark in CA and started to get some attention internationally. Then in 2023 they went viral on TikTok in Japan with their song Otona Blue and have capitalized on that success with collaborations like this, a new album called "AG! Calling" and a World Tour playing mostly mid sized venues of a few thousand capacity.
AG! have stated that they are not idols and they avoid the banal sexuality that often comes with female idol groups...that's one of the reasons they wear the modest school uniforms with skirts below their knees.
If you are interested in more AG! I recommend:
"Atarashii Gakko, Otona Blue, The First Take"
If you want something a little heavier their first ever single, Dokubana, is a good option, just search on

Like you, I was totally floored by this MTH+AG collab. Everything just worked so well between the two groups. I see you were also smitten by Suzuka. She really has that effect on people. I thought I was the only one who noticed her tongue roll during the first refrain. 😅 Kanon is the one who sang the second refrain with the sweeter lighter voice. Rin is the badass rapper, and Mizyu is the shamisen shredder. Although all four of them have unique likeable qualities, I seem to like Mizyu the best for some strange reason.😄
If you're mesmerized by their dance moves, do check out their choreography videos for Maningen, Giri Giri, and Seishun Wo Kirosakuhado. Totally mind-blowing!
My first foray into Atarashii Gakko began with their song Tokyo Calling, which immediately caught my attention as it was both arresting and inspiring. Then what sealed the AG deal for me was when I saw their First Take performance of their song Otonablue. This performance made me love the girls even more, for I saw them as a Japanese musical Monty Python.😂

They are not one specific genre and tend to be all over the place. They do provide a lot of commentary on the social environment of Japan and it is really interesting. Like BABYMETAL, they have been doing this since they were kids. My favorite song of theirs is Koi Geba because of the guitars and fun choreography. watching their lives are awesome as well. The recent American ones are hilarious because Suzuka, the girl with the glasses, is out of control and goes into the audience to run around and she even climbed over the balcony at one of their shows. Another great reaction idea would be to their funniest moments because these girls have a lot of personality and will showcase it everywhere.

It's not for nothing that they have been around for over 25 years now and are already legends of rock/metal in Japan and an inspiration for many musicians of today's generation. Akane from B-M is just one example. 🔥🤘🏻
However, there is a small warning to be given regarding MTH when it comes to reactions. Warner as a label doesn't hesitate when it comes to copyright. Strangely enough, this single seems to be less affected (for now), but we've often heard in the past that they don't seem to hold back. So please be careful. 🙏🏻

Yes, you can find a primitive version of HANABIE covering this one, I think at a talent competition, if you look around. Shimi is an ancient song, but MtH brought the classic out of storage, and created this new version with AG. AG are performing parts that were originally Nao's (the drummer's), with a few special bits of their own.
Yes, Nao inspired Akane from BAND-MAID. Also Tamu from Nemophila. And likely not a few other performers. When MtH was in their early success in the mid-2000s, there were not nearly so many female musicians in metal, or even hard rock, in Japan.
Nao is the elder sister to Ryo, the wacky guitarist and vocalist with the dreds.
