I would sprinkle in a lot of rocks in the forests too for extra realism, I'm excited to see the countryside develop! It's a good opportunity for farms. I recommend adding a lot of forests between the farms along with a lot of dirt roads that lead out to summer homes and camping grounds and random piers along the coast. Since the city is in the waterfront, water infrastructure is key to adding realism since it's there the first initial residents would've settled. Also, try to connect paths and gravel roads between the communities so that they are wavy and 'unpleasant' to drive on, so people still choose to use your highway instead of the gravel roads, I did this in my own city and oh my goodness the random gravel roads and turnaround points on highways leading to small communities/industries do so much to add realism! I hope some of this helps shape your ideas.
