Living in Rural Japan: We Move to a Renovated Akiya in Ine, Japan | April Vlog

  • April marked a major milestone as we transitioned full-time to our partially renovated Japanese house in Ine, Japan. Previously vacant, our akiya has been a part-time home while I commuted between Osaka and Ine. Now, our family is settling in full-time in this beautiful coastal town. Our rural Japan life begins!
The house isn't completely finished, but we couldn't wait any longer to embrace rural Japanese life. We anticipate many challenges, but we're excited for this new chapter. Join us on our journey as we navigate living in rural Japan, renovating our akiya, and exploring Ine.

Your new format is very enjoyable and I like seeing your wife and daughter. Your village seems quiet, how are you able to film without seeing anyone else? Bummer about the broken glass, but it is probably better it broke before you installed it. I'm off now to watch your wife's videos. Thank you for the link and for your Life Update.

It’s certainly a big problem, the older generations don’t want to make it easy for newer generations to take over these rural areas. Even Japanese are treated like foreigners and they refuse to sell their abandoned homes in some areas while their towns deteriorate.

OMG!!!! Fukuchiyama is essentially my honseki. It was the first place I was placed as an ALT, and I still consider it my origin in Japan. If I do ever finish my Japanese nationality process (I got through half of it several years ago before losing my job), Fukuchiyama seemed the most appropriate answer to that question from the Nationality Section. Just wild to see it here. At the time there were only six ALTs, so everyone knew us. It was overwhelming since Fukuchiyama isn't small. It's like 80K people. My own renovation should largely wrap up by the end of July. I need to do another update on my channel.

Fukuchiyama is probably the biggest town ''near'' me. It's about an hour and a half drive so I don't really visit there much but it has everything I need there. It must have been a nice town to live in. I love the castle there.

Is definitely a beautiful village and location! Always wanted to go to the northern coast, but never did. There is supposed to be an incredible protected natural island off the coast, no one is allowed there.
    What is the winter weather?
Owner of neighborhood sushi shop in Tokyo used to go to the North Coast for one day once a month and purchase directly from the boats. Upon his return there was a line around the block waiting to enjoy his creations...I never happened to be there at that time
...could only enjoy the elaborate sushi experience stories!

Winter is cold and snowy at times. We have a few small islands that are no go here as well. Supposedly sacred. We can buy the fish fresh off the boats here too. Every morning the fish boats come in early and you can grab any fish you like as they unload them and pay next to nothing for it.
