Just a though -They should add a hinge to the top of the launch tripod so the plane remains horizontal when the tripod tips over the ramp, to prevent the tripod from forcing the plane into a nose dive. That should increase the elevation and glide distance quite a bit.
I think the intention was to get the airplane into a steep dive to accelerate past stall speed. If it didn't dive immediately, it would just stall. I'm sure the designers watched hundreds of past failures which did just that.
Gliders can easily stall. Anytime the angle of attack exceeds the ability of a wing to maintain laminar flow, a stall occurs. Fold a paper airplane, set the center of gravity too far aft, and watch the plane pitch up, and then dive in a stall.
The Wright brothers could have flown earlier, higher, farther, and longer if they had Red Bull. But their voices would have also cracked in excitement.

I was working for Parks and Rec during this event. And little did I know my future wife was also there. This was an amazing moment on top of watching the guy's parachute out of the sky.
The plane looks just like 1 of the 1's that were around in the 80's that you could buy and put together yourself. There were a bunch of them and were made of a styro type of substance but were fun. I liked the different details on the different types of planes. It is friggin awesome that Redbull did this for real

That design is actually quite smart. In an aircraft, you have two "stores" of energy, basically, altitude and airspeed. You can run up to make it go faster, but this design gives additional altitude, too. Which is quite nice, so you can go further. The one thing that makes this design "eh" is the quite high drag from the looks of it, but solving that is super hard either way.
As someone who lives in Saint Paul, MN I have to say we need more of this back in our lives again ! I remember attending this event with my family when I was younger, and it was awesome!!
