  • My Ryobi Reciprocating Saw, starting smoking after some extremely heavy use,, I trimmed down 3 threes, from 6 to 3 meters, and that was a bit much for the Reciprocating Saw.

    I have one of the really old dark blue ryobi recip saws I got @ a thrift store - think it was 5 or 10$. I've put the lithium batts in there it's a great tool for cutting heavy and light gauge mild steel. No smoking problems. Most of my Ryobi tools are the old blue ones - they just keep on going. I have a few of the lime green ones - jig and the right angle - and they seem okay as well. But gotta say, the blue puppies are awesome and I've seen them regularly on thriftstore shelves. They take the modern batts, so no brainer to just use up the old ones.
    Seems there's more and more vids of certain Ryobi tools - smoking from mild to moderate use. So seems like they are beginning to loose their edge. In any case, for a home DIY'er, the old blues and SOME of the lime green puppies are good to go.
    Thanks for the vid - love that you filmed the entire process - pretty cool!
    Peace

    just to note the shaft with the cut out is a knock off or cheap copy use the one with the 5mm round shaft. The original type one will be all copper winding while the one with the cut out is aluminium kind of winding. this tool uses 11 teeth and 5mm shaft.

    Looks like the bushings in the reciprocating mechanism are worn. I'm looking for replacements for mine right now :) If you reversed the motor polarity you would change the wear to the other side of the rear bushing - that's the one that takes the most abuse. (it looks like you did reverse direction - nice!)
    The bushing wears down on the right hand side and then the push rod starts to make contact with the casting and I suppose given time it will break through it.

    • @MyPlayHouse
      @MyPlayHouse  2 роки тому +1

      That would be a mistake on my side,, or random. :-)

    Removing the pinion gear, from a burnt motor is easy... simply use a rotary cut-off tool (Dremel) to cut the armature shaft, behind the pinion. Then drive the pressed shaft with a small pin punch and a hammer.

    • @FourDollaRacing
      @FourDollaRacing 2 роки тому +2

      Removing the pinion gear, from a new motor, is more difficult... it requires a pinion puller, which may cost as much as a new motor.

    The motor designation you are looking for is Mabuchi 550, a much copied design. It has been a classic with motors for radio controlled boats and cars for decades, and I am confident that the usual suspects (Graupner/Simprop/Robbe/Kyosho etc.) have the choiciest collections of tuning stages for that bugger in all kinds of shaft diameters. No need to rely on the chinesium ones. ^^)

    • @MyPlayHouse

      This one was a 775 motor :-)

    • @Eo_Tunun
      @Eo_Tunun 3 роки тому

      @@MyPlayHouse Well, looks like the 550s are a drop-in kind of replacement. ^^)
      Having seem the difference in performance between common 540s and their high efficiency brethren back then makes me wonder if a high efficiency 550 version won´t rattle a reciprocating saw to bits before you had time to let go of the switch, though. It´s drastic!

      @@MyPlayHouse It does seem to happen a lot though. Even on the website of the hardware store here that sell them, there are a lot of people mentioning the same problem you have had. I think that motor fan might be a design flaw since the common complaint is "motor burns out, smoking, dies".

  • @Seegalgalguntijak
    @Seegalgalguntijak 3 роки тому +1

    These motors all look pretty much the same, you really have to go by the numbers that are written on the side of it (sometimes they also mention how many teeth the gear wheel on the shaft has), otherwise you'll end up buying something that doesn't work. I have a Bosch cordless drill (rather old one), which does have a smokey, stinky and sparkly motor, and there are no spare parts available for it any more, it's a shame to have to throw an otherwise OK working tool out into the trash! Darn planned obsolescence....

      The mechanism in this one and the "old blue one" everyone seems to like so much is the exact same mechanism and motor, the older blue has worse ventilation too. They only really survive to the present day because they're antiques so people don't use them very hard
