England vs Chile 0-2, official goals and highlights

- Alexis Sanchez fired a brace as Chile condemned England to their first Wembley defeat under Roy Hodgson.
Barcelona star Sanchez produced a man of the match display to put the hosts to the sword a year and a day since a 4-2 reverse to Sweden.
On a crisp winter's evening, Hodgson named three debutants in his starting eleven, with Southampton pair Adam Lallana and Jay Rodriguez joining Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster in making their international bows.
It was also a night that saw Frank Lampard, wearing the captain's armband, receive a golden cap to commemorate becoming only the eighth player to reach 100 appearances for England.
Hodgson made eight changes to the side that beat Poland last month to secure qualification for next summer's World Cup in Brazil.
In his programme notes, the England manager described Jorge Sampaoli's Chile team as "formidable opponents" -- and as soon as the whistle sounded it became evident his observation was accurate.
After a bright opening in which Phil Jones tested Claudio Bravo in the Chile goal, the hosts enjoyed much of the ball and looked threatening going forward.
Wayne Rooney found James Milner with an intelligent pass and set the Manchester City man free down the right.
The midfielder fired a low cross into the danger area and in his attempt to clear Marcos Gonzalez almost diverted the ball into his own net and but for an instinctive save by Bravo, England would have found themselves ahead.
But the Three Lions' early dominance stalled as Chile broke into their half with their first signs of intent on seven minutes.
Mauricio Isla played an exquisite pass in behind the England backline that found Sanchez free in the box and he set up Charles Aranguiz, who had a clear sight at goal.
Only a brave block by Jones prevented Forster being called into action for the first time, or so he thought as seconds later he was picking the ball out of his net.
England failed to clear their lines and Eugenio Mena found himself in space on the left. He picked out Sanchez who lost his marker and met the inch-perfect cross with a powerful low header past Forster.
A frantic spell followed as England looked to hit back immediately.
Milner had a fierce shot well-parried by Bravo before Forster got a strong hand to a strong Jean Beausejour effort moments later.
Lampard then saw a 30-yard effort from a free-kick expertly tipped over the bar by an outstretched Bravo. This was proving to be anything but an exhibition match as both teams went for the jugular.
Just after the half hour mark, the Chileans produced a stunning display of counter-attacking football from their own corner flag which led to Beausejour bearing down on Forster's goal.
Forster did well to make himself big and delay the Wigan Athletic man's shot, before the chance fizzled out but it was a warning to England.
As the half drew to a close, Hodgson's men struggled to find their rhythm and maintain possession for any sustained period. However, seconds before the break Jack Wilshere found himself in space in the centre of the field.
He picked out Rooney with a perfectly weighted pass and the Manchester United star beat his man and found Lallana in space in the box.
Unfortunately for England, the Southampton forward could not quite get the ball out from under his feet and his shot was blocked by the Chile defence before going wide of the goal.
England began the second half brightly, with Rooney breaking free on the left to force a corner. They kept knocking on the door but the Three Lions could not break through a resolute Chile defence.
Hodgson decided it was time to inject some fresh legs into the game. Jones was replaced by club team-mate Chris Smalling and Rodriguez came off for Andros Townsend, who had an almost immediate impact.
The Tottenham man picked up the ball wide on the right and turned Mena before playing the ball into Wilshere, who was subsequently bright down on the edge of the box. Leighton Baines' seemingly goal-bound free-kick clipped the wall and went out for a corner.
By this time Jermain Defoe, Tom Cleverley, Jordan Henderson and Ross Barkley had been introduced as England stepped up the tempo.
But the visitors sought to slow the pace of the game down, get men behind the ball and prepare to hit back on the counter-attack.
And their game plan succeeded as they claimed a second after Marcelo Diaz picked up a loose ball and found Sanchez, who darted through on goal before dinking the ball over Forster to score his second of the match and wrap the game up.
Hodgson will of course be unhappy to have seen his unbeaten home record disappear into the cold November air, but will take solace in the fact he's been able to blood three newcomers to the international scene as he continues his audition process for the World Cup in Brazil next summer.
Now full focus turns to the visit of Germany in four days' time.

Sanchez is better than the whole England squad combined together. Coming from an Engalnd and an Arsenal fan. 😛

Games like these show to europeans - specially brits -, that football is not all about Premier League or Europe. Great match by Chile, deservedly victorious.
We finished on top of our group but when you look at the teams we played against it's quite pathetic to be honest.
Ukraine, Montenegro, Poland, Moldova & San Marino!
In South America every team has to play each other & honestly speaking their qualifying round is considered to be the toughest on the planet, they get to play teams like Uruguay, Argentina & Brasil which is great practise & gives them experience against hard teams, I never expected England to win but I do have better expectations from the Germany match coming up because we have more experience against them but then again the world game can be very unpredictable!
Well done Chile you played very well.........
When Brazil does not organize the world cup (always), southamerica has 4 1/2 places. Two will go always to Brazil and Argentina, so you get 2 1/2 that have to be taken by Uruguay, Chile, Colombia Paraguay and Ecuador (and others too bad to mention), each of them a descent team, not really good but descent.
Angel Campoverde not really good?? thats why we have like 3 teams in the first 8 places inthe fifa ranking, can you please remind me which position england is right now?? lol there you go, argentina 3rd, colombia 4th, uruguay 6th.... and by the way our quilifying round is the toughest t in the planet
Yes, not really good, those teams are there now, but their natural positions in that ranking are not those. Why are they there? Maybe because the world cup is in southamerica, turkey and south korea did something unusually good in 2002, because the world cup was in Asia. If you average over the years, their positions are not those.
Angel Campoverde +Angel Campoverde so if thats the reason why then why chile is in 12th position and not in the on the top 10? or why germany is 2nd and not argentina??, thats why colombia beat belgium 2-0 and tied against holland? and argentina is in 3rd place why? because is southamerica and not because they have the best player of the world and many of the best strikers of the world,(messi, aguero, higuain, lavezi), of course in the past years those were never going to be the positions, but right now is a completely different thing..... sweetie i just hope our teams can meet in the world cup i am colombian by the way.... i dont know if you are english because your name doesnt sound like it but we will see whos best
I totally agree with you. Uruguay and Colombia are both much better than any other teams england played against in their group. Then to beat Paraguay or Ecuador, its not impossible but you have to wake up early. Both are teams with good players and have a great spirit. Often European hold south american teams in low esteem...anyway England sucks since many years...

Thank you Sanchez, coming from a Barcelona fan.

Well done Chile, you lot are becoming a bit of a bogey team for us,good luck in the world cup.
Alexis Sánchez!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Arsenal!!!!!!!!!
Sanchez is better than suarez for sure. I've never seen any player can move so well in his positioning. Besides, he works like a horse, he creates and scores with industry. Arsenal can count on this guy, should see his full potentials blossom here. A prize catch for sure !
mohawk548 and what do u think about alexis now?..two years playing there
From France to Chile you guys are way better than England, England had easy world cup qualifying group butchers they play big teams like Chile they fall apart England will be thrashed by Germany
No entendi bro OERO AMI EK INGLES
what did england expect the guy plays for barca lol
alexis sanchez
***** 18 goals in these season for alexis and... IS NOT EVEN THE THIRD ? bitch please...
yeah hes 4th in the whole league while playing for a team that doesnt suit his counter attacking play. but still manages too whoop some ass at even though england was at home hehehehehe

Just a point to note. Chile did this without their best player, Vidal
And in 98 without Zamorano... All the same

kuekkk eeeeeeeeeeee 🙈 🙈 🙈 eeeeeeeeeeee
If Chile is able to beat a world class team like England, and able to be the nightmare of Germany (We almost won it!), I believe we'll qualify quite comfortably to Knockout Stages!
Forster is a great shot stopper, both of the goals were completely out of his control and the defending was absolutely shocking from Baines and Co. Feel bad for him on his debut, should get more of a chance.
England are easily the best team in the world and will show their class in June 2014. No point in peaking too early.
England wont make the first round, one of the most overated teams. If Montenegro did not fire their coach and ruined the flow of their team--they were winning the group till that time-- (which lead to them hiring an amateur and worse performance) England would be at home watching again from the sidelines. All that fancy league with foreign players wont help their national team. They are OK, but not good enough to pass first round.
listen you are going to the other side of the earth during the world cup where Latin football team dominates, have you Englishmen even looked at what Chile does with teams like England? I only say Welcome to Brazil in 2014 where the hell breaks out for teams coming from europe
I was being sarcastic. It's only football.
bedandbreakfastman11
yee im not angry XD i like england to but just saying bro
volim volim England would have picked Montenegro apart. At home definitely, away maybe a few question marks. I don't support a team at international level, even though i live in England, although they are pretty bad at most levels, they are not as crap as what people have been saying about them.
In 1998 it was Marcelo Salas and in 2013 it was Alexis Sanchez destroying England at their own stadium in Wembley. The England FA wont be in a hurry to invite Chile back to Wembley any time soon.
Chile outplayed us in every department and they deserve credit! England looked so poor it was hard to watch. There was no positives to take and i feel we going to get a hammering by Germany on that performance.

SHORTYTHEPANDA cx Portugal are a beatable team, and no shame to losing to the current world champs, but Chile ain't going down without a fight
personally i think south america is the hardest place to qualify to the world cup because you got brasil argentina colombia etc.. so when any european team plays a south american team they will give you a hell of a challenge and england played well but south american football is very well played and thats why i like to watch europe and south america play against each other a lot because it's always interesting to see the match up
lots of becauses, can you do it more simple?

I remember this being such a disappointing defeat after dominating the chances and coming close so many times. Nice to look back on though, makes me want revenge on them!
ALEXIS THE BEST!
I really like the England team but you need to train and play a consistent lineup, not always picking and choosing young talents in the Premier League and lower divisions. Scout the players extensively in camps and then develop them to be prepared for international play. Really love the team though. Greetings from USA.

Grande chile!

Poor England they won't make it out of the group stage in the WC and even if they do with that crappy team there is no way they can beat big teams like Argentina or Brazil. They have no chance!!
Viva Chile mierda!!!!!!
Fantastic goals. The first goal, you can see the goalie never saw the ball coming and the second goal is just complete talent and class. England has some good players, like Lallala, but they were too messy, unable to complete more than 3 passes in a row. It was such a disaster, I doubt Hodgson was able to get anything positive other than "never try that again," from the way the english team played. If England gets their shit together, watch out.
Grande Chile!!!
why in a soccer match the loser always seems to be terrible ?why cant it just be a game where the best team that day won?
Who are you...Pierre de Coubertin?
patricio sanmartin thank you for the comparision,im not chilean neither english,i just think that a little reasoning is good from time to time, passion always block our judgement
What the fuck is soccer, did you mean football?
Because some sides, based on national or club characteristics, need to delude themselves when a blow to their ego such as seeing their team proven vastly inferior occurs. If you want to hear unprejudiced commentary free of bigotry and sour grapes, I'd suggest watching a game in a language other than English to see how not everyone pretends their team "beat themselves" to save face after defeat.

Why is everyone so hard on England? Chile got a very early goal and used it to their advantage they knew England would have to press more that's why they kept passing it between the goalkeeper and defenders to draw them in then counter. People saying Chile didn't even have Vidal, so what? England played with a very experimental team so everyone could experience the south american style of football.
English people don't think they'll get through first round even though their team is decent, i don't know why they say that. I do think they need some good attackers
Lo dijo clarito: " Como Marcelo salas en 1998 "
i thought in few moments of highlight that england playe quite well and control the game, it seemed the inclusion of youngsters that provided more experimental team b didn't paid off, however they must find the right tactic and chile did play well
1:54 WOW, that defence! I've never seen a worse defence from a professional team before.
