  • The bodies of two workers who were on the Baltimore bridge when it collapsed on March 26 have been recovered, Reuters reported. The bodies were pulled from the mouth of the Patapsco River a day after the massive container ship crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge.
Four more workers who were part of a crew filling potholes on the bridge's road surface remained missing and presumed dead.

I find it odd that ships of that size are allowed to navigate without tugboats when in the harbor. I think that is something they're going to have to look at in the future. I used to work on the tugs and no ships were un-escorted until they were safely out of the harbors.

I am in Canada Halifax, NS is a major East Coast harbour that has 2 container ship terminals. One terminal requires big container ships to pass under 2 major bridges. By law entering and leaving big ships must be escorted by 2 tug boats navigating those 2 bridges. The same thing in Vancouver, BC. Rock abutments and rock islands protect bridge piers at major ports like Halifax. Montreal, Vancouver. Tug boat crews actually practice for things like a loss of power or steering of big ships. Before the initial entry of a new to the port that ship is inspected for sea-worthyness. All oil tankers entering Canadian waters must be double-hulled. Vancouver recently has a new 6000 HP tugboat that can move even the largest ships.
Horrible tragedy for the men who were working on the Baltimore bridge at the time of the accident.

We are seeing a load of comments that the Bridge was weak and in poor repair. Look at what remains - Most of the structure is physically intact, showing the Bridge was strong. The failure is at the point of impact and it inflicted significant damage on the ship, those who designed it and built it deserve kudos for doing a good job for their time. I'm sure people are doing "Catastrophic Accident" scenarios for other bridges as we speak.
Take a step back and understand that there were a dozen mega cargo ships in Baltimore and 20 - 30 heading in, each passing under the bridge coming in as well as going out.
It is quite likely that over 50 years over a million large ships have safely passed under it.
Baltimore is #14 of the US ports and handled 53 Million tons of cargo last year alone.
So the safety record is pretty good despite all the tinfoil hat conspiracy theorists

I find it hard to believe that when the call went out to stop all traffic at both ends of the bridge that there was no way to contact the presumably DOT workers on the bridge via radio and/or telephone and give them a chance to exit the danger area.

    • @jimbobeire
      @jimbobeire Місяць тому +7

Why is that so hard to believe? The Mayday call to the port was about 90 seconds before impact. Port then relayed to police dispatch to close the bridge and try contact the construction crew.
With toll plazas and cops at weigh stations and speed traps at either end, that was the simple part. With all that going on, someone has to try to find the piece of paper that says which radio channel the crew is with only a few seconds left to do that. The cops weren't in constant communication with the road repair crew. Probably just spoke to their foreman before the start of work. Doesn't mean they have all their cell phone numbers or anything.
Maybe if the Mayday call came in a minute or two earlier it would have been enough time, but 90 seconds is not long, especially if two other groups of people have to be contacted before getting to the people who are in touch with the workers.

Did they not have radios or were they just unable to understand what "get off the bridge" means in english? I don't think we will see much discussion, because it may go against the narrative that these are jobs Americans don't want. I'm sure they don't want to look into WHY it has to be all hispanics. One obvious answer is, they cost less to employ than American workers, who will understand and demand their rights.

Their safety protocols need to be updated. Also, the bridge, being built in 1977, was a Truss bridge, meaning, aa the NTSB chair said, if one critical part gets hit, the entire bridge would be affected and could collapse. The preferred method of building bridges these days is that if one part gets hit, the other parts of the bridge will absorb the shock and not collapse. Many parts wrong in this tragedy. You would think that with the port being one of the busiest in the USA, with many huge ships passing under it each day, that all these 'safety' things (including tug boats guiding the ship till it passes the bridge ) would have been considered important as 'just in case'.

No one mentions that the bridge was opened in 1977 and at that time the boats were half the size of the boats being sailed today. The bridge was not built to withstand the force of that boat. The Singapore cargo ship Dali chartered by Maersk, which crashed into the Baltimore, US bridge on Tuesday 26 March, was carrying 764 tons of hazardous materials to Sri Lanka,
US media reported. The waste included mostly corrosives, flammables, miscellaneous hazardous materials, and Class-9 hazardous materials, including explosives & lithium-ion batteries - in 56 containers. So says the US National Transportation Safety Board, still ‘analyzing the ship’s manifest to determine what was onboard’ in its other 4,644 containers.
US media were also blaming the Baltimore Bridge collapse on a foreign cyber-attack causing the ship to suddenly change course to hit the bridge. Other US media blame ‘immigration’ for the ship’s totally ‘Hindu’ crew, even as it was Baltimore pilots who operate within the harbour. Yet, Asians are used on ships carrying toxic materials over long voyages.
More to it than you'll ever get from MSM.

It's to do with upgrades to the Panama Canal - Ships used to be classed as PanaMax, Suez Max and so on.
Container ships are often measured in TEU (Twenty foot Equivalent Unit - AKA a small shipping container - lots of modern containers are 40' but the TEU is the standard)
Before the 1970's container ships were typically 500 to 800 TEU
Since 2014 18,000 TEU vessels are possible
Larger vessels also exist but cannot transit Suez or Panama
Bigger ships are more efficient once upto speed - a 50,000 ton ship may only use 50 tons of fuel per day - A freight train would use that to haul about 5,000 tons of cargo in theory but have to stop and start much more

Monday morning quarterbacking. Dropping the anchor may have slowed the ship enough to save lives. Dropping anchor was probably a last resort. The pilot probably knew the anchor was not enough to stop the ship. Perhaps the ship would turn and run aground, turning out of the dredged channel. Pilots aren't omniscient. I'm sure this guy did everything in his power to avert the accident. At least no one can say "why didn't you drop the anchor!?". Because it's obvious that the anchor would have slowed the ship, and possibly diverted it from hitting the bridge. Again, monday morning quarterbacking. Aka Hindsight bias, "which is the reason behind the “Monday morning quarterback” phenomenon. Because people feel that they “knew it all along,” they overestimate their ability to foresee the outcome of future events, such as medical errors, sport scores" or bridge collapses.

Apparently, you are stupid, you can see them restarting the engine and trying to stop the ship. Anyone who has run a boat knows that when you're in reverse the prop wash will cause the boat to veer in one direction from more pressure on one side of the hull and the prop itself will cause a crabbing effect.

When the bridge was built in 1977, huge ships like the Dali did not exist. It is questionable that even with more buttressed bridge supports, whether the ship would have knocked down the bridge anyway. "Historical negationism, also called denialism, is falsification or distortion of the historical record. It should not be conflated with historical revisionism, a broader term that extends to newly evidenced, fairly reasoned academic reinterpretations of history. " Again, the bridge was built in 1977. Standards were what they were. There is CONTEXT that must be considered. Like, back then there were NO ships this size. We can't change that with wishful thinking. We must analyze the situation of building the bridge as if we were in that time. Not through the lense of current history. Why do these sub par structures still exist? Money. Taxpayers fund these projects. And they take a looooong time to design, fund, and build. Just ripping it down and starting over would take years. As evidenced by the time , effort, and money it took to build in the first place.
"The Key Bridge was a toll facility operated by the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA). The bridge was the outermost of three toll crossings of Baltimore's Harbor, along with the Baltimore Harbor and Fort McHenry tunnels. The bridge carried an estimated 11.5 million vehicles annually. It was a designated hazardous materials truck route, as HAZMATs are prohibited in both tunnels. Upon completion, the bridge structure and its approaches became the final links in I-695, completing a two-decade-long project....The project was financed by a $220 million bond issue (equivalent to $1.9 billion in 2022) alongside the twinning of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in October 1968. Bids for constructing the proposed Outer Harbor Tunnel were opened in July 1970, but price proposals were substantially higher than the engineering estimates. Officials drafted alternative plans, including a four-lane bridge, which the General Assembly approved in April 1971."
[This] bridge would provide a route across the Baltimore Harbor for vehicles transporting hazardous materials, which are prohibited from both the Baltimore Harbor and Fort McHenry tunnels. The United States Coast Guard issued its bridge permit in June 1972, replacing an earlier approval of the tunnel from the Army Corps of Engineers.Construction of the Outer Harbor Bridge began in 1972, several years behind schedule and $33 million over budget."
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Scott_Key_Bridge_(Baltimore)
Federal officials told Maryland lawmakers Tuesday that it could cost at least $2 billion to rebuild Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge.
Back to the taxpayers. If you asked the taxpayers "would you like to spend another $2 billion of your hard earned money on replacing a bridge that already cost $220 million in 1977 to build, with a new bridge?" the answer is usually no. And that is the main reason, the answer to your question "why".
Now, not only Baltimore residents will have to pay, but everyone, as money from federal entities will get thrown in as well.
Canada, namely the Port of Halifax, has policies that mandate using tugs as escorts to avoid such things happening. This is a much less costly fix to the problem at hand, one of outdated infrastructure.
If one does a deep dive on what happened in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, ( a devastating and deadly Category 5 Atlantic hurricane that caused 1,836 fatalities and damages estimated between $97.4 billion to $145.5 billion in late August 2005) one would come to understand that the TAXPAYERS and elected officials there were appraised by hydrologists that they had three choices in the level of protection provided by levees and flood walls. On Monday, August 29, 2005, there were over 50 failures of the levees and flood walls protecting New Orleans, due to the storm. In many cases the TAXPAYERS had VOTED for lesser levels of protection, which COST LESS, and were less effective.
The other answer to your question WHY, is that homo sapiens as a species are willfully ignorant, rationalizing, greedy, lazy, and cheap. Humans also suffer from Hubris: an extreme and unreasonable feeling of pride and confidence. Being THE MOST ADAPTABLE species on the planet, THE apex predator, able to change our environment to suit us as no other species on the planet can, we think we can out power the power of nature. Despite the warnings of trained scientists who tell us differently, as was the case in New Orleans.
I suggest you pick up a book titled The Control of Nature, by John McPhee. It will help you to understand man's hubris.

There's a lot of old bridges with outdated designs, most of them won't be replaced soon either, but when they are, it will be with better design.
