I flew in there a couple of times for the Carnival, the approach is gorgeous with Sugar Loaf in the distance, other than that, it's just another big city on the ocean, but it has a couple of nice beaches and a great song about one of them (Ipanema!) As a GA pilot, I thought it was a bit tricky landing there due to some hazards (like a bird strike, a short runway and busy traffic), but pilots usually handle it well, if they come in and out of there often.
@@georgesealy4706 That, my friend, means that things are almost always routine so it's no big deal, but many unexpected things can happen in aviation. In the case of airlines, passengers rarely know about it but when things are NOT routine, due to weather or any malfunction of the airport equipment, or the aircraft itself, or the ATC rarely makes mistakes but all those thing CAN happen. Sometimes things look good and then something happens and missed approaches must be made, go-arounds (aborted landings) must be made, and it's usually handled very because they practiced all kinds of things in the flight simulator and can deal with it well. But humans are not perfect and rarely mistakes are made. Pilot error is STILL the cause of 85% of airline crashes. Thankfully most know how to handle emergencies and they get the aircraft down and sometimes passengers don't even know there was an incident, the pilot merely tells them "we'll be delayed a bit" Air travel is still the safest way to travel so don't worry about it.
@@MJLeger-yj1ww Thanks for your reply. I was being a little bit joking with my comment. I have the highest regard for the job that pilots do. In fact, I find it amazing that with the thousands of flights daily that there are so few accidents.
@@georgesealy4706 Thanks, George, it's hard to imagine, but stats say that at any one minute in the day, there are more than 120,000 people in the air! There's certainly more people traveling by air than ever before, and more aircraft, so that is often the reason for the delays at the airports, along with weather sometimes and aircraft mechanical delays but those are in the minimum, pilots know the weather because they all have radar right in their panel in the flight deck now!
Worked in Rio back in August. We were told to not leave the work site except to take the shuttle to the hotel, and to stay in the hotel until we shuttled back to the site. It was kinda sad. We used to look forward to going there and having fun.
From this video appears to be just water on the other side, but you have some islands over there with buildings. Anyway in terms of noise you find some airports way worse than this.
My thoughts exactly.....why is the approach over land, beach and the marina when you can equally make a right base turn over the ocean which will not cause any unnecessary noise pollution to the city.
Better to stay away, if you decide to still take the risk take security precautions like you're entering a war zone (just don't be mean to people but stay alert at all times)

Ordinary people may not realize how demanding it is to make such a sharp turn under such low altitude (calling out 500 feet in the turn) and low airspeed. When flying low and slow, you don't have full control over the aircraft (i.e., the plane is not as sensitive and fast-responding to inputs as with a faster airspeed), and the risk of stalling is high. In order to make that sharp 180-degree turn, the plane needs to bank with a really wild angle, which will cause the airspeed and lift force on the wings to drop even more. This can potentially lead to a stall in which the plane falls out of the sky. Due to the low altitude, there is simply no time for recovery. In order to make the turn safely, you have to constantly monitor the airspeed and altitude and increase the throttle if necessary. Another challenge is that you have to line up perfectly with the runway when you finish the turn, which demands precise aileron and rudder control. You don't want to approach the runway with an angle, right? In addition to that, we have a very short runway on which you have to land early in order to come to a stop without overrunning into the water. So you probably have to go extra slow with full flaps and fly at the edge of stalling. Moreover, you cannot land too hard for the sake of the comfort of the passengers, so you may have to hit the runway with the perfect combination of airspeed, altitude, and vertical speed. Despite all these, the pilot managed a pretty soft landing on this short runway in the video, which was quite impressive to me.
You have to get down quickly here. Notice on almost all videos you see of this approach, the 50 feet callout is before the threshold. Floating on the flare is not viable here. You have to get the wheels on terra firma and the spoilers out well before a third distance down the runway. Both directions are difficult for different reasons, but both usually require steep turns well under 1000 feet, and this one has the turn completed at only 400 feet! Kudos to the captains who fly this approach daily.

No margin for error in touchdown zones without pontoons or outriggers. My thanks on behalf of the passengers that do not realize what takes place in the front of the aircraft. Well done, gentlemen!

Bianca Cervantes Hi Bianca, of course you can use it. Please send me the link when it’s done so I can watch
Wales is such a beautiful country
I flew in there a couple of times for the Carnival, the approach is gorgeous with Sugar Loaf in the distance, other than that, it's just another big city on the ocean, but it has a couple of nice beaches and a great song about one of them (Ipanema!) As a GA pilot, I thought it was a bit tricky landing there due to some hazards (like a bird strike, a short runway and busy traffic), but pilots usually handle it well, if they come in and out of there often.
It sure is good to know that the "pilots USUALLY handle it well." That sure is comforting.
@@MJLeger-yj1ww - You are not wrong, but this airport is (will be) celebrating 47 years with no casualties.
holy hell. only 4500 ft. I agree. One of the toughest and most beautiful approach. Looked like about 150 degree bank for final.
Dave Elmy This airport is used for domestic flights, for international flights the Galeão international airport is used with a four-kilometer runway.
Worked in Rio back in August. We were told to not leave the work site except to take the shuttle to the hotel, and to stay in the hotel until we shuttled back to the site. It was kinda sad. We used to look forward to going there and having fun.
Wow that landing was smooth AF
Very worthwhile watch. Thanks for making it.
Very nice.
Awkward however that they should make the approach coming over the city instead of over the sea.
Noise is not an issue in Rio i guess.
It depends on the wind direction, you can see that the wind it's almost straight into the nose of the acft
@@Pepo-1969 Yes i understand that but still. Why not making the turn overhead te sea and having the same runway?
From this video appears to be just water on the other side, but you have some islands over there with buildings. Anyway in terms of noise you find some airports way worse than this.
My thoughts exactly.....why is the approach over land, beach and the marina when you can equally make a right base turn over the ocean which will not cause any unnecessary noise pollution to the city.
Cause there is just a much bigger airport next to this, the other airspace is used for that more important airport.
Beautiful, thank you for post. Miss Rio.
😍😍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Better to stay away, if you decide to still take the risk take security precautions like you're entering a war zone (just don't be mean to people but stay alert at all times)

@@dusanpetrovic1181 hey I'm 19 and haven't been assaulted or presenced an armed one yet, south zone is safer which is the one with touristic stuff, but outside doesn't look pretty, it's city of roughriders, like Escobar's Miami 5x worst, but it can be survivable
Definitely scenic!
What a smooth approach and delicate landing.
One day I'll go and see Rio ❤️
And will be welcome, for sure.
Me too
And I'll never leave...

0:46 lol damn birds (pilot be like: ahhh disgraziedos)
What a great job! Flawless!
Beautiful Aproach & perfect landing!!! Great video!!! Thank you!!! Greetings from Argentina !!!
That was amazing. Great footage.
Damn what a scary short airport runway. It reminds me of my trips to the tiny Micronesian islands in the Pacific rim.

Rio (2011)
MAN you Guys are the BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Man, that was smooth! Brazilian pilots kicking some ass!
Beautiful! The best part...blue water!
I just saw this video and the view from the plain was pretty . thank you
Not a lot of room for an error...
Not supposed to have anyway
Actually there is airport is clear at both ends terrain wise, a go around is always available
Smooth touch:) lovely landing
When I went to Rio twenty years ago, it was by bus from Belo Horizonte, so I didn't have the view!
Skilled pilot... Very soft landing...
all approaches are beautiful
Are there still many international companies flying to Rio ? Sadly Swissair used to fly there from GVA with DC-10 but that was about 30 years ago. They don't fly here anymore since a long time, I wonder why.
Smooth landing!! Those guys are good!!
At 2:50 see this very short runway...
Do pilots realize what a beautiful job they have/
not just beautiful but important job.
Taunter Atwill Yeah, we do.
It looks so beautiful when you can't see all the murders on the ground
Most of the murders occur on the favelas, barely never on the rich part of the city, where the rich people lives.
You've lost the chance to remain silent
Rio is not as dangerous as Saint Louis, Baltimore, Saint Louis or Detroit!
Wow super landing
Approach with emotion!
That is very pretty, nearly a sight-seeing flight, approaching Sydney is normally pretty as well, the harbour, the bridge, opera house, of course then you are in the airport, the worst airport experience I have ever had. I try to avoid Sydney to leave/enter the country, evrything is slow and/or late!!!!!!
Stunning excellent great wonderful landing ❤
Amazing scenery!
i've landed here a few times. as a passenger, of course. didn't realize the margin for error was so small, though.
Vry smooth landing. I could not tell the change from air to land.
This is beautiful .........
Wow, perfect landing!
