I love the Cubase examples! I need to practice writing ostinati…they’re tough for me to write because I end up hating them from listening to them over and over by the time I finish up! Lol. Also, this may be a dumb question but do you know what type of ostinati the harp plays in the beginning of the song “City of Tears” from Hollow Knight? Great work as always :)

Thank you, I'm glad that you find them helpful! And this is a good question, I've actually been getting a lot of questions about the OST from Hollow knight lately. There's sheet music for this particular cue on Musescore and I"ll add the link at the bottom of this reply. The key signature has 3 flats which would typically mean either the key of Eb major or C minor, but the Ostinato really emphasizes F, so it could also be in F Dorian. Any of these options works for us, because they let us know which chords are available for use in the harmony! The Ostinato really just focuses on three notes; Eb, F, and Bb. Each of these notes belong to an Ebsus2 chord, which is an interesting choice but also to the Ebmaj7(9) chord. In either situation this would be a harmonic ostinato, since each of the notes used appear in the underlying chord, as a tension tone (you can check out my video on 5+ note chords to learn more). What makes this harmonic ostinato sound so unique is that it really emphasizes a color tone (any note beyond the traditional 1st, 3rd, and 5th of a triad chord). The F is a color tone, and takes up 5 of the 11 notes used in a single measure. Emphasizing a color tone like this is risky because it can cause a lot of dissonance, but the composer gets around this by repeating the ostinato 4 times before bringing in the melody. This gives the listener a chance to adjust to the idea and accept it before further material is introduced. This helps bring a more whimsical and fantasy like sound to the music, because it's a novel sound that the listener isn't quite as used to hearing. However this is just what I noticed after looking at the first few measures. Ostinati often evolve gradually throughout a piece, and there's no saying that this particular one doesn't shift to a more melodic role later on in the music. I encourage you to check out he sheet music or try to replicate the sound track on your own to see what you can learn! I hope this helps as a start :)

Thank you for your videos and for ostinati especially! Can you up the volume of your mic please?I use Studio One Presonus. Can i make that kind of orchestral music?Ostinati section is part of Cubase macros?Thank you again!

Of course! Any DAW can work with film music, more or less. Some are better suited than others, but I'm familiar with Presonus and know that it's a fairly strong option. To answer your other question, Ostinati refers to the repeating rhythmic idea that you write and not a specific macro. Any instrument can perform an ostinato so long as it can be played rhythmically, and this isn't restricted to Cubase. What I think you're referring to is the "short strings" that I used to play it. This was from a sound library called "Albion One" by Spitfire audio. I recommend checking them out because they have a lot of free libraries that you might find useful!

Ostinati existed in the Baroque era and before.
