That's a very real possibility for a number of industries. If a US company has enough business overseas that they can cut our US markets, they'll move and be done with the domestic markets.

But did it not improve your steel sector though? Harley Davidson CEO and top executives could have taken a pay cut if they were patriotic. They preferred to send jobs outside to prioritise their profits.
Mind you countries like India has 100% tariff on Harley Davidson bikes because they prioritise local manufacturing and this is good for their country.

@@marct9942 I am not comparing India and USA. I am saying tariffs even out the playing field. Also, there is no perfect system anywhere. So, this is just my opinion and I would lean towards tariffs as many countries impose it whereas the US has generally promoted free trade. But with the amount of debt the US has accumulated, something needs to be done. If I am wrong about tariffs, then the current system is also not working and something drastic is required.

We had a local home improvement company. They had earned my neighborhoods trust and we passed their name around. We were getting ready to build a covered patio with them when Trump raised tariffs on materials. The builder called us with a modified quote. It was 50% higher. We canceled the plans. We were not the only ones. The builder went out of business.

@_loss_ There aren't any tariffs on domestically produced products. If you do your homework, you will find that the tariffs will target specific products (AGAIN; EXAMPLE: JOHN DEERE). John Deere is moving to Mexico. They want to produce their machinery THERE. While keeping a minimal presence here, they want to sell their products here duty-free. It also keeps other countries from "dumping" their products here. I've worked in the steel industry for the last 43 years and have witnessed many instances of "dumping." Foriegn produced steel was dumped here in Trumps' first term. The steel was priced lower than what our domestic producers could make it. It was crippling our domestic producers. The USW BEGGED Trump for tariffs to level the playing field. He did, and it saved a lot of jobs. BOTTOM LINE is that we support our domestic producers the best we can with FAIR TRADE POLICIES, or we support their ex-employees with HIGHER taxes because of plant closings, and the drain on our social services. One way we collect taxes on people working. The other we spend taxes and watch ALL our domestic producers leave the US. Ain't freedom of choice great. BUY BUY AMERICAN, OR BY BY AMERICA. If you're a Conservative, then you appreciate deregulation and free trade. Correct? Well tariffs are the exact opposite. That's one.
Tariffs are not by definition bad. If your country produces a (half)product of acceptable quality AND quantity AND for a reasonable price, and you want your citizens to buy those (half)products instead of imported alternatives ONLY THEN tarrifs might be a viable approach. But, you must be aware that other countries will not like you much, and will reserve the right to do the same to any of your exports.

They would likely return to actively farming 100% of their land to try to produce more to make up for falling commodity prices with profits spiraling downward. Many other countries (especially Europe) also have price supports complicating world markets. By far the farmers who accept government subsidies vote republican and decry government payments to anyone but themselves.

I have been a farmer, so I know what I am saying. Farmers think they are conservative and should vote that way because for so long they had to get by on very low margins. Farmers need to understand that the reason for government subsidies is to keep the farmers producing. It is not to help the farmer, the government could not care less about the individual. Politicians know the sure way to get beat in an election is to let food prices increase. Politicians will do whatever it takes to continue being elected. After I quit farming, I got a job. I could hardly believe I was making so much money while doing very little work. And the work was so easy. It would take a rather large farming operation to net $100,000 while farming. I was able to do that in 8 months with very little effort, as compared to farming. Farmers need to look at the alternatives, being a farmer is not God Ordained.

And, like most of us in the steel industry, diversify and/or improve production. The tariffs you all are talking about saved DOMESTIC PRODUCERS. China and other countries "dumped" so much steel into our market, prices fell to a point where the foreign steel was cheaper than what our DOMESTIC PRODUCERS could MAKE IT. LET THAT SINK IN. How long would YOU be a farmer under those conditions. Tariffs imposed on foreign car producers influenced them to build factories here. Sure, profits go back to parent company 's home, but we still benefit with jobs and choice. That is a better deal than before. Incorrect. If other countries are "dumping" their output in the USA, e.g. Chinese aluminum, the government should not impose a tariff. Rather, the government should actually buy all that product that is being sold below market value. This will result in a surplus of that product, so local makers will not be able to sell their own production. However, the work force that is no longer needed for local production can be shifted to producing other output. I.e. if the Chinese are "dumping" aluminum in the USA, that will allow the US producers who use the aluminum as an input to produce at a lower cost and also provide opportunities for production of new and different products. This is a much more beneficial solution than a tariff.

    • @ashbeck1736
      @ashbeck1736 Місяць тому +1

@@aheroictaxidriver3180 An honest inquiry who is producing and then selling that aluminum at below market? I understand the opportunities afforded if there is a "dumping" of a product as that would indicate cheaper prices. However, the scenario of producing new and different products would entail a revamping by current manufacturers or for new manufacturers to build an infrastructure as in a new facility to produce those new and different products which would entail a lot of time and money in both scenarios. In the meantime the unfair trade is still continuing for whatever time that it takes to revamp or build a new facility while the targeted tariff goes into immediate effect.

You're calling it "unfair" when some foreign government subsidizes production for export. This "unfairness" is actually a BENEFIT to the people buying the imports. The import location's government can immediately capture a good portion of the benefit of the foreign government's subsidy by buying up the cheap imports. The subsidy would be flowing from the foreign government to its exporters and then to the importers (via the local govt.).

I so wish that more people would understand this. I was still working as a import/export manager for a food and medical packaging manufacturer. When Trump enacted the tariffs and with the implementation of AFCMA replacing NAFTA, our exported goods into Canada and Mexico slowed because of the added Tariffs. Remember during Trumps time in office, lumber and plywood prices rose through the roof. They blamed the hurricanes for the reason, but the brunt of the increase was due to the fact that there is such a huge amount of lumber and plywood that is cut and milled and made into plywood in Canada. They were raising the prices in retaliation to the increase in Tariffs. The same with agriculture products and materials. The other part of tariffs is raising them does not deter American business from shifting the manufacturing of their products to China and other Countries, because as you said, they will just simply pass the added cost on to the American consumer. These higher tariffs have also impacted and contributed to the rise in inflation. Imagine what it will be like in Trump gets in office again.

I wish my dad and brother had this guy's insight. They're both farmers (technically my brother's a chemical engineer working a side gig on the family farm), but in our state people vote Republican. I was raised to believe Republicans were "the good guys" and the Democrats only cared about city folk. I didn't question that for a long time, but I also saw the good Obama did and was glad that things weren't so dire as my family made them out to be. And then I saw Trump, and regardless of party, I had no respect or positive expectation for him. When he became President, I just hoped that things wouldn't be as bad as they seemed like they would be.
Obviously, it was pretty bad in hindsight... Trump showed me that my family beliefs were wrong. Republicans aren't "the good guys"'; it's more complicated than that. But they definitely aren't the friend to poor and working class people. My father and brother will never see that. They'll look back at their hardships and struggles to keep the farm going and never acknowledge that there might be a connection to Trump, or the Republican party. They're not dumb people. My brother especially, I'll never understand how someone so intelligent can be in such grave denial of reality. It's tough...
I guess my point is that for a lot of Republican voters, it's a deeply held family value, and a lot of people are scared to question it. They're scared to check if what they believe is actually true, so they never look into it, ignore the news and politics, and... get all of their information from Fox, if even that. They don't need to question anything else because they have faith that Republicans are "the good guys". ...It's always been a cult. They just never had a leader before.

I'm a 9th generation (just that I'm aware of) farmer. I can tell you right now, that any farmer (or anyone else), who thinks voting for a political candidate is going to save them needs their head examined. The primary problem in American Ag isn't tarrifs, it isn't labor costs, it isn't transport costs, it isn't the cost of fertilizer and it's not even the cost of fuel. It's not even the fact that multi national corporations crush small farmers and are swallowing up Ag land. The REAL issue is excessive regulation - full stop. This is an equal issue in mining, petroleum production, timber and the manufacture of products and goods. Ultimately, producers in this country are strangled by what's basically an entire library of red tape in the guise of local, state, federal and sometimes even international regulations. If you don't believe it, try growing a garden and try selling a dozen jars of homemade salsa to your neighbors and call up the state Ag department and ask what you need to do to comply with any regulations. You'll soon be crushed by enough red tape that you will say, "I can't do this." And if you ignore the red tape, we live in a country that SWAT teams small farmers for producing and selling raw milk, butter, jelly, homemade bread and meat processed in a kitchen all in the name of "food safety". Meanwhile, feel free to go grab some Doritos, eat a block of margarine and all the toxic colored soda you like that will cut years off your life. The death of the family farm didn't start under Trump. It didn't even start under Biden or Obama or Clinton. It didn't even start back in the day when Willie Nelson was doing Farm Aid. It started about a century ago as government began to grow excessively in size and power. And it has continued ever since. To be clear, many farmers support Trump because 1.) The Democratic Party is the party of excessive and ever growing regulation, and 2.) Because Trump promised to scale back regulation and that is still a cornerstone of his platform. The problem with Trump in this case, is that the rubber doesn't meet the road. Even if Trump really means what he says on this subject, it doesn't change the fact that he's basically a preppy real estate developer from New York City and he's pretty much clueless about the full extent of the problem. Most small farmers who are switched on to the problem are basically now heavily anarchistic even if they consider themselves to be otherwise pretty conservative folks for the simple fact that they want government out of their business and out of their lives simply because they know that they really can't survive inside this so called right-left system. Most of them don't want tarrifs and most of them don't want subsidies, farm loans, grants or other "help". What they want is the government out of their way so they can back to farming.

  • @TySchmidt

You guys remember Trump's 25% tariffs on imported aluminum and steel in 2018? Well it caused the price of US aluminum and steel to shoot up overnight because they were handed a monopoly and knew the Europe's manufacturers couldn't compete. In response, the EU imposed a tariff on US made goods like Kentucky bourbon, Levi jeans, and Harley Davidson motorcycles. So now Harley is paying more for their steel to make the bikes, and is no longer competitive in Europe unless they want to sell every bike at a loss. So they do what anyone would do, pay to open up a new plant and move some of their production overseas so they can skirt the tariffs. Finally, upon news breaking that HD was moving jobs overseas, Trump went on TV and publicly slammed them for abandoning their American heritage, which soured a lot of Americans on the Harley name. Trump was too stupid to realize it was his own fault.
