I love how he shows us in real time on the video what to do in excel. Having something explained or written out can be helpful, but actually seeing him go through all of the steps is a great way to learn how to use this software and then change things or incorporate them into your own work.

I really liked that Dr. Grande explained what the "point" means in calculating percentages using excel - made it much more simple to understand! I also very much enjoyed Dr. Grande's inclusion of different ways to "clean up" or organize the data so that everything is clear and precise.

What drives this home for me is the example of test scores and what you wanted to do with them. This was clear and very understandable. Definitely a go-to video and one of my favorites.

This video was pretty straight-forward. I followed it easily, and I can see how useful it is to be able to see the percentile rank of each participant. I also liked how Dr. Grande changed the "point" column to participant ID. I would easily have gotten confused the way it originally was set-up.

Rachel Foster Yes, relabeling is very helpful! He even went as far as to show us how to put the underline back in after bring the participant numbers over to the ranked data set. It looks so easy and clean.

Helpful step by step video. I am thankful for the beginning instruction on add-ins. It would have been quite frustrating to follow the subsequent steps without it. It is this attention to detail that makes Dr. Grande's videos so helpful.

Using Excel is already confusing to me, so I really appreciate you explaining certain portions of the output like the points and how it is in fact just the participant. Thanks for the step by step process to convert the points to the actual coordinating participant ID.

I'm glad Dr. Grande showed how to get the participant numbers over to the data set. I was wondering how that was going to work all the way through the video. Turns out the "index" function is all that is needed. The only issue I have with it seems more complicated to get the participant numbers lined up with the data set than it is to actually get the data into percentile rank! With as many functions that go on in Excel, that's not too surprising, though.

Although I can replicate this, I think I'll need some more practice (and reminders) when/if using this in a real world scenario. I think Excel (and Dr.G) makes these functions look so easy. Actually practicing and using Excel is a different story. I appreciate having these videos handy so we are able to reference when needed! Thank you!

When I first watched this video, I became confused when the columns where being calculated because I knew they would not match the original columns. I was curious as to how to fix this occurrence and was pleased to see that Dr. Grande did explain how this was done. Additionally, I liked how the top row was frozen and it was easy to keep track of each column, I had always wondered how to do that.

I like that Excel allows you to sort the data. In this case by the highest percentile to lowest. It is also nice that once you have a formula on a cell you select and drag and the rest is calculated automatically. I sometimes use this for simple calculations.

This is also very clear and easy to follow, however, having used SPSS in the past, must feels to me like SPSS is easier but of course Excel is not too complicated.
I will need more practice to use excel but I prefer going back to SPSS as I still gave knowledge of its use and can remember more easily.
Exactly confusing how the points didn't line up with their respective IDs but after formatting, the various scores points matched with IDs and was easily followed. Another great presentation.

I can definely see how this can be used in a large variety of ways in research. I can imagine sorting all the participants into percentile rank by hand would be very tedious and be subject to error if the person doing it makes a mistake. I also like how Dr. Grande shows how the boxes look without all the correct stuff checked because then if I do it later I know what things to check and what not to.

Great video, easy to follow. I've learned how to use the data analysis toolpak to rank the scores' percentiles. It's cool to see what seem like complicated functions used to solve apparently simple problems (like cleaning up the spreadsheet with a participant ID column instead of a point column).

  • @angeliquecastro2209

percentile and rank are two statistics or values that I have struggled with in the past in stats classes. This video is one that I will probably revisit again and again. Scores, rank, and percentile are all generated with the formula, so having a data set and calculating these things seems doable. I think it was nice to see how to organize the data set to get the participant id in front of all the new numbers instead of the point.

I agree, Angelique. Percentile has always been an elusive concept for me. I always feel odd looking at how my students' percentile ranks, because I have no idea how they are calculated. At least now I have a little bit more background knowledge when explaining percentile rank to someone. I also liked how the data was organized and how the video showed how all of this is able to be done in excel.

I actually understood this video much more than the previous ones. Excel can do a lot of calculations and formula if you know how to input the data and make your spreadsheet first. It is still easy to make mistakes and there is always to learn more. I am finding I understand more by continued practice. This was easy to follow and excel will do the work for you. It's trying to get it straight inside my head that is confusing.
