  • Have you ever how this tradional art form- Urushi Lacquer, would look on moden items? I hope you would find your answer through this video.
With a history dating back to thousand of years, Urushi is a very traditional art that bring out the long-established lustrous look that warms the eyes of the beholder. Knowing such values, Fostex, a Japanese audio-focused company, bring this traditional arts into the modern world.
In the beginning, you can have a closer look on how the Urushi is collected and how it is processed to create a shiny, smooth Urushi paint. The manufacturer- Sakamoto Urushi is in charge from start to finshed of the Urushi base. With a slightly different techniques during the making of this heaphone; a newly, more innovative touch to this tradional art form- Fostex is able to blow a more modern look to this item, yet keep the tradional values.
You can see that tremendous care went to making each Urushi product. First, the wooden base is lacquered with a base Urushi and cured. Then, the craftsmen will covered the base with (base on the video) a coat of glitter-like silver paper. Next come the sand-out the excess pieces and then these artisan will coat the pice with another layer of Red (Shu) Urushi lacquer. Finally, the logo is painted on and coated with Silver paper.
