these tutorials are so useful for me. I play on console, so no mods, pretty much no user created content you can download, just the vanilla game. And it's almost impossible to create transport networks that are both functional and pleasing to look at with that. This helps out a lot, thanks!
Hi Richard, thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. I'm glad the video was helpful for you! It's definitely a little bit more challenging to get things the way you want them without using mods. If you're looking for another channel that doesn't use any mods I would suggest T4getGaming if you haven't already. Welcome to the channel!
Exact same boat here! Instantly subscribed, loved the walkthrough/tutorial and easy to follow explanations! Keep up the good work!
Thanks Conor5291 - welcome to the channel!
this is geometry in all its glory.
Tumzaembeats! Thank you for checking out another video. I was happy with how it turned out ... it's maybe a little unrealistic but at least it looks relatively decent :)
Lol I’m watching this in geometry
Haha, I'm glad you're watching the video but I'm not sure how much help it will be for your class :D
Amazing video. Very in depth .
Please for future videos lower in game sound / music to allow for us to hear you better
Thanks for taking the time to make the video
Thanks for being so detailed with road lengths. Taking the time to explain the road segments in terms of money was great.
You're welcome Aaron - I hope the interchange turned out well!
While I don't love tunnels being used this way, the interchange is highly effective. Nice work!
“Modified clover leaf” as in “remove everything from the clover leaf except the bridge” :D Looks great though!
Thanks Linux! :D
this is a cleaner and easier to understand iteration of the popular stack interchange. the differences here to a normal one are that the left turn roads are underground rather than above ground, this helps people understand and see how the interchange works in a really easy way. also it does have a rather smaller footprint, really recommend this one
Hi Broler - thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. I appreciate the feedback and support. Welcome to the channel!
That intersection and crossing is IMMACULATE. I love the sensible technicality yet being creative on it and it really made the traffic flow good.
Binged. More episodes on the way
Thanks for checking out another video MKM Vibe - the interchange works pretty good for the most part and it was fun to make! There is a slow down every once and a while but nothing too bad
Awesome industrial layout! Has worked really well in all of the cities I have put it in
Thanks matt, glad to hear it's useful for you!
My wife looked over my shoulder at 12:52 and said, “Why is he building a uterus?” 😯
haha, that's a good question - I never even noticed! I honestly don't even know what I was going for ... apparently it also reminded someone of a symbol in Far Cry 5. So now I can use that and uterus to describe it to people :)
This was a really informative walk-through! It will probably take me hours to try to recreate it myself when I try as I'll surely make endless mistakes and have to pause the video a bunch of times, but it appeared to be very easy as long as I'm careful and follow your clear instruction! Thanks :)
Hey Edmund Davis, that's awesome that you're going to try and recreate it! Don't worry ... I can't tell you how many countless times I did this interchange to practice before I actually recorded the video. Welcome to the channel :)
Had this game forever but im just now trying to understand it and its fun! Thanks for the tutorials. I appreciate them.
You're welcome GB Cardo, welcome to the channel!
That's an incredible video guide: content, explanations, speed, everything! Thanks, man!
Watched the video two times and got aesthetic pleasure :)
hey Źmicier Jaraševič, welcome to the channel! Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment and some feedback. I'm glad you enjoyed the episode! :)
Dude this helped my city's traffic unclog sooo much! Thank you
That's good to hear, welcome to the channel Isaac!
Your city saver Bro! Followed every step and it worked!
That's great to hear Grimmbeardd - I hope it works well for your city, welcome to the channel!
I did it by myself thanks again Jester for you good explainations :) Lovely and full of senses architecture !!!
That's awesome Julien, I hope it works well in your city! :)
Luv this! awesome man! Now I gotta try this... cheers
Thanks Marwan! If you're having trouble and on PC the asset is available in the Steam workshop: steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2107200519
What a fantastic video. I like the way you took the time to explain every step. Much easier then watching these videos that others make that are sped up, and you have to pause and go back and watch again to make sure you do it right. Hope all your tutorial videos are the same. If so definitely got a new subscriber here.
Hey Streets Of Hamilton, thanks for stopping by! I believe most of my tutorial type videos are that way ... you're right and it would be terrible sped up! I also have a time-lapse version of episode 7 and the asset is available in the Steam Workshop. I hope the other episodes are helpful :)
Very nice interchange. I have a similar thing where the main roads go in tunnels. One down two levels, one down one level, and then the crossing roads (turning left) go one set on ground level and one set with two bridges on level one up.
Thanks a lot for properly explaining the reason why you use the dirtroads to see the guidelines.
Thanks Marc, it turned out much better than I thought it would! Those grids can be extremely helpful when planning out a road layout. Dirt roads can also be a little bit more flexible in terms of placement and then upgraded to their desired road type. Good luck with the rest of your city!
Wow, what an impressive build. I’ll be downloading that one thank you.
Thanks BikerSi!
i'm glad i found ur channel dude, i recently watching a lot of your videos and i must say your videos is very beginner friendly, the way u explain things is very simple and easy to follow, and a lot of your guide and tips is very helpful too like "lane mathematics and road hierarchy", for this lots of quality content u deserve ton of subscribers dude
Thank you Muhammad, welcome to the channel - I'm glad the videos have been helpful!
I just started watching this series after watching Biffa's. I love it! It's simple and nice to learn along
Welcome to the channel Teerin, glad to have you here!
very good stuff. you taught a whole lot in very short time.
Hi JawssTech! I'm glad the video was helpful - thanks for taking the time to give me some feedback!
Nice! Very nice!
Thanks Eddie Ash!
I tried to pull this off without using video as a crutch after watching it and I think it's the first time I've pulled off a decent interchange. Thank you!
That's awesome ggregg0, congratulations! I spent a long time practicing so that when I went to make the video it looked like I sort of knew what I was doing :D
Ty for this guide it helped me make it but as a train lines instead
You're welcome Demon Knight ... that sounds awesome!
Awesome
Thanks Sylvia!
Very cool
Thanks Muhanned - welcome to the channel!
9:00 gettin some mad Far Cry 5 vibes from that shape
hey again Richard - unfortunately I haven't played Far Cry 5 ... I looked it up and it does look very similar!
This is just what I've been looking for. I play on xbox one so trying to find decent instructions that you dont get half way through then get told "next just use the ....mod" is pretty difficult. You've gained a subscriber from this
Thanks J W, welcome to the channel! How did the interchange turn out?
@@jester.Gaming It went well thanks. It's going to get busy as it's to connect forestry and farming industries to a cargo train terminal. Because of this I made one small tweak, rather than 2 exits I made the exit 1 node earlier and used a 2 lane highway that splits into 2 off ramps. Its coping well so thanks again!
You are welcome - sounds like a busy interchange!
You are welcome - sounds like a busy interchange!
Made this and loved it, did some lane mathematics and made the straight sections 2 lanes, had the on/off ramps also 2 lanes, and then 4 lanes at the end
That's awesome madmanszalinski!
@@jester.Gaming I forgot to mention...I did it on console :)
Nice, I've never played on console but it looks much tougher!
Awesome designs 👌
Thanks Spores - the interchange is available in the Steam Workshop if you're on PC (link in the description)!
Thank you very much ................ please do more vids like this ,,,, i love the way make it simple ... thank you again ,,,,
Hey Nomad, thank you for the feedback! You are very welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I'm currently working on a video about using the principles of road hierarchy to design a road layout for the high density area of our city. I hope to have it out soon but I'm still getting comfortable making these types of videos so it is taking some time for me to get it done .... and also work is interfering with my free time!
I am a beginner. Thanks for explaining in detail.
You're welcome Alabama Woodsman, welcome to Cities: Skylines and the channel! :)
I made one similar to this, but with left and right exits that split and rejoin in a fork. It fixes the traffic slowdowns from merging.
take a tip from biffa's style, remove a lane from the main highway when a lane leaves it, this will give dedicated turning lanes (obv iously adding it back after a lane joins back to the highway)
Hey Robert - I made a video on that subject and updated most of the interchanges in the city! :)
Wow Thank you
You're welcome Rinoa, I hope the video was helpful!
Thanks for this most interchange videos are done in the middle of episodes and I have trouble following them but you did an excellent job taking the time to clearly explain and show everything. Also you didn't use evil elevated curved road sections inspired by overly patient and hand eye coordinated demonic forces :).
haha, I'm glad the video was easy to follow along. I think interchanges are one of the hardest things to build. What I have is relatively simple compared to a lot of the other ones that I've seen people make ... but it's still holding together and working well so far. Thanks for the feedback and welcome to the channel Warren!

Teaching must be in your blood. Most gamers don't bother explaining themselves, and that's totally fine. However, some simulation games like Cities: Skylines require more of an academic approach rather than an entertainment host approach.
However, this doesn't mean that an entertainment approach won't work. Flabaliki, for example, is really entertaining regarding his city builts. I also like his accent. He's a great entertainer.
However, when I started to play Cities: Skylines a week ago, I did not realize how HARD this game really is. That's when I started to look for "dry" tutorials.
"Dry tutorials?" Dry tutorials are what you would find on LinkedIn snd Pluralsight. They are courses on software made to help your career. It's not made to entertain you like UA-cam. It's made to teach you so that you can actually learn something. Even UA-cam tutorials are not dry all the way since since there usually is music playing, which can be distracting when you're trying to learn.
Chess for example, is a game that requires dry lectures rather than casual UA-cam tutorials. P.S I don't play Chess. It's just an analogy.
And even though dry tutorials are found on UA-cam, lots of technical tutorials are hard to make out what the speaker is saying. That's not a racist thing. For example, if you enroll in History of Economics and you have a hard time understanding your professor due to an accent, it's a legitimate reason to drop or find another professor you can understand so that you get rid of the barrier that's blocking you from learning.
When I'm trying to learn something, I want a dry lecture as if it's English 101 or remedial Elementary Algebra.
P.S I did not mention those subjects out of the blue. You have mentioned a use of a grid, units, and geometric terms perpendicular and parallel.
Yes, avoiding the word, grid, is kind of hard, especially when talking about Cities: Skylines. Bu all means, you can avoid the word by using geographical terms like zoning or saying "I'll place here, here, and there."
However, when you started to mention quantitative forms of measurement, i was literally thinking rise over run. Although you said used generic terms like going down a big one and going down a few little ones, you still stuck with numerical values such as the cost to build each road segment. But I think maybe even a math teacher might say you go down 1 big unit.
However, when looking at graph paper or engineering paper, you'll notice that there are units contained in a bigger unit. However, if it was just pure elementary algebra y/x, all increments would have to be the same. Hence, even if something is 1.25 units away, each interval needs to have the same amount of units. Hence, if 4 units on graph paper represent an interval of 1, then the next interval for 2 would be another 4 units from 1. Even on a Sine graph Pi/2, pi, 3pi2, and 2pi radians should be all equally spaced on your graph.
But enough math. Lol.
I was just thinking that if, for example, 1 big unit equals 9 x 9 and you move a total of 9 + 2, you literally could have said you move down 1 and 2/9 th's or even (- 1 and 2/9). And if you were to move to the right by 4 small units, that's 4/9ths. So it's almost like saying slope
m = ( - 1 2/9 / 4/9ths).
Yet at the same time, since we are dealing with curves, m would NOT equal what I just said since y= mx + b is linear. However, from a graph paper analogy of graphing rise over run, going down a certain amount of units and going across a certain amount of units when you are basically plotting a point on the grid on Cities skylines is like plotting a point for a graph and is very similar to rise over run. However y= mx + b would only apply to roads that are straight lines going in any direction (i.e the if a straight road was angled only at 1 angle, such as 45°). Curves are a totally different monster like y=2^x or even a square root or log, which goes into advanced algebra I don't remember, especially when you have a linear line intersect on a curve, which uses a system of equations.
Man, i totally went off a tangent. Sorry. The only reason why I'm sharing this with you is because of your use of quantitative measurements when mapping your roads. And this detail oriented approach is what is needed to have a terrific dry lecture on creating roads in City Skylines. No, you don't need to know how to graph a line or a curve mathematically, but having this type of detail oriented instruction is what is needed. It night sound boring, yet it is do useful because your audience, or even your students of Cities: Skylines will be able to apply what they have learned and even take it a step further in the creative critical thinking process -- tsling your design and making it their own derivative work OR truly understanding the mechanics behind this game. That's the benefit of a dry lecture -- applying what you have learned and not going in it for the sake of pure entertainment even though simulation games are gor pure entertainment.
Danke guter Tipp
You're welcome!
is there a tutorial on uploading the asset? Love the detail and "speaking thru the thought process" ! Great work.
Thanks Darin, I appreciate the feedback! I personally don't have a video about uploading an asset ... I had to do some looking around myself to figure it out and it wasn't particularly clear on how it was done. I don't think there was anything specifically that I found that helped more than anything else and I kind of just figured it out as I went
I do like the attention to detail, but I found that most over passes work better with the HW lanes further apart, and merge traffic in from left and right.
Hey Paul - those are some good points you bring up. There is an occasional backup of traffic around the merging lanes because they are a little close together but nothing ever persists for more than a few seconds! Once it starts to backup enough to cause traffic issues I'll have to make some adjustments. Welcome to the channel!
As a console player, I love this tutorial.
I'm glad it was helpful, welcome to the channel Jordan!
this interchange type is large and has 4 vertical levels. It is known as the Stack interchange.
Makes sense :D
Since playing this game; I now look at real life interchanges and how they could be applied (replicated) in the game. Driving through Dallas I'm amazed at how many levels of ramps/interchanges they use! How hard would it be to utilize ONLY ramps or above ground routes for this interchange? Tough one I'm sure! Ether way; Thanks for the tutorials!
In the real world a stack interchange is only built above ground. The cost for tunnels is bad enough, but add in the lack of visibility in a curved tunnel and nobody wants to build that lol. I think we mostly just run cloverleafs here in good old USA. Cheap, durable, intuitive, 2 depth grades only, great visibility. The in game one only sucks because the buffer lane is too short and the AI is bad.
A stack interchange is simple, eh? 4 depth grades is as tough as it gets! Never seen somebody put it underground though since most people like the cross pattern. Either way, I'm reasonably sure stack exchanges are the best in the game.
20:45 couldn’t you have upgraded the highway ramp to a two lane highway?
Hmm that's possible - I'll have to check it out. It might not have enough space to be upgraded. Thanks for checking out another video Epic Watermelon!!!
My thoughts immediatelly. It would have been simpler. And I don't see how this is better htan the clover intersetction, it's surelly more expensive
@@jester.Gaming Np your vids are great!
Thanks Watermelon!!!
Didn't see any mention of it: lane math - probably have the middle portion two lanes, expand to three, then four, and it will flow even better. (After 2 or 3 nodes, it can merge back into 3. :)
You made an underground stack interchnage.
My OCD senses are tingling
Right? Those lane mathematics are burning my eyes.
I'm not sure if this is good or bad Jay-R! :D
I'm so going to use this
That's awesome Noemi, I hope it works well in your city!
@@jester.Gaming thank you for your videos!
I'm curious how a Double Crossover Merging interchange (as other C:S YT'ers have built) would compare, performance-wise, to this one, and if it is a design you find at all useful.
Hey Gary - that's a good question ... and an awesome looking interchange! I'm not sure I can really answer your questions though as I have never used one of those interchange types before. It may be something that I can add into the city at some point when I put in the next interchange. It does look complicated so I'll have to try and see if I can even make it first. This interchange does have some flaws so the one you mention may run better!
That's a nice build but I had to disconnect the highway from the intersection for another project and I could not connect it again. Keep getting the message "space already occupied". Had to demolish after an hour's work.
Can you do this with just a middle of the highway? Im new to the game and just purchased my 2nd tile, however there are no interchanges on the highway. I cant seem to find a guide for making an interchange in the middle of a regular highway road. Can i use the same principles in this video?
Hey Kyle! Sorry for the late reply, you may have already gotten past this point in your city. You can definitely put it in the middle of a highway to create an interchange to enter your city!
I think this is before your lane math episode. Did you try any changes to this intersection based on lane math?
That's a great question R McGill - I did go back and apply lane mathematics to the intersection! Everything is still running smoothly ... the only part that I couldn't get quite right was the angle of the turn right before/after the on/off ramps. It's a little too sharp and vehicles tend to slow down a little bit.
@@jester.Gaming Thanks. I asked because it appeared that your workshop asset (2107200519) did not incorporate lane math so I wasn't sure.
That's a good catch R McGill! I did not update the lane mathematics on the asset but I did on the interchange in the city :)
I'm curious, is there any advantage of using tunnels instead of flyover roads? I experienced flooding in tunnels in real life and I was thinking of maybe creating this same interchange, but above ground.
Uh oh, glad to see you're okay! It's a little bit easier below ground since you don't have to deal with placement of support pillars / interference with other roads. There is no real advantage or disadvantage to them other than that as far as I know. Good luck with the interchange - let me know how it turns out Gideon!
That's just a double stack interchange. You can search, there are already tutorials for that
Very true .... given how old the game is I'm sure everything I have done has already been done by someone else!
The pillars can be so annoying in vanilla. Tunnels to me in cities skylines are awesome since you can also zone on top
I can not wait to try this on my city.
That's awesome Maxx - I'm glad you like the design! If you're on PC and having trouble the asset is available in the Steam Workshop for reference (link is in the description!). Thanks for taking the time to make a comment - welcome to the channel!
I play on ps4.
Thanks for the welcome.
No problem Maxx, glad to have you! I've never played the console version of the game so I hope you can still build the interchange. Good luck! :)
Do you have any highway off ramp exit tips? I always get jams off the highway into the avenues
Hey Chris! I have a couple that might help ... ua-cam.com/video/X6cbygDO1-M/v-deo.html (simple highway exit) and ua-cam.com/video/lJYPcXB8PcQ/v-deo.html (road hierarchy) - I hope these help!
I normally move the off ramp back a little so it doesn't back up onto the highway as easily. But it may give less space to the next interchange
I’m really curious why you don’t use the normal interchange, this one costs probably way more to operate and build, so is it better for traffic in comparison?
Or is it just for visuals?
Hey Vincent! I'm sure the normal interchange would have worked just fine but I wanted to try something out that was a little different :)
The only bad thing about this is the fact that the cars can't go to the opposite side
Hey Heitor, thanks for leaving a comment. When you say they can't go to the opposite side do you mean they cannot perform a u-turn?
it's nice but I would start the lane that turns right from the lane that becomes a tunnel rather than making two freeway exits one after the other. And the exit lane in two lanes instead of one. And I would join the lane that turns right to the one that was a tunnel.
Hey Alexis S., welcome to the channel - thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. I was going for appearance more than function on this one... I like your ideas though! Depending on how the traffic goes as we expand the city I may have to revisit the interchange and make some adjustments as you suggested.
Hello again🤗😆👋👋
Hey there Watermelon!!! I hope you're enjoying the videos you're watching! Are you working on a city of your own?
@@jester.Gaming Yes but it is on Consul (PS4) and getting ideas from your videos but that’s why I asked if you had mods because I’m consul you don’t have access to mods and I love the game city skylines and pretty much all the UA-camrs that make videos of it use mods please continue this anmodded it is great🙏 and you played a game great and I really enjoy watching your videos!👍👋(keep up the good work!)👍👍👍👍 oh and one more thing how long are you going to work on the city for?
Thank you for the support Watermelon!!! I hope my videos are able to help you out on PS4! I don't know how long I will play this city .... still for a little while I think, I don't have any plans at the moment for something different.
I wonder if this kind of intersection exists in the real world.
I'm not sure how practical it would be in real life ... there's lots of crazy stuff out there though! :)
AWWWGPPPPGPPPP been a night
Glad you survived! :D
I wonder why the cars not crossing the bridge?
Could you tell me which map is this?
Hey Alicia Kim, this is Eden Valley from the Green Cities DLC!
So unrealistic, that ramp will launch you into space at 100km per hour
Maybe not very realistic ... but I think it looks cool! :)
creating the overpass back after the tunnels doesnt work for me, not enough space. I followed everything perfectly
Hey bob bobo! The only think I can think of is to make sure your ground is perfectly flat before starting. You may be running into issues where things aren't lining up properly as a result of the terrain being uneven. Are you on console or PC?
Too bad i can't play this game snymore, would really help with traffic near industrial areas.
Uh oh, I'm sorry to hear that Blade1301! The good thing about Cities: Skylines is it isn't like other MMO type games where you can get "left behind" if you don't play much ... it'll still be here almost the same as it was next time you're able to play!
21:00 Lane mathematics? Why not lane mathematics?
Hey SystemofEleven! That's a good observation... I do eventually apply some lane mathematics but I think I did it off camera. I also have another video specifically about lane mathematics found here (ua-cam.com/video/cEy1jJOYGdc/v-deo.html) if you want to check it out!
Isn't this basically a stack interchange
Hey ADeadKid! Yes, I think it falls into that category :)
@@jester.Gaming Btw it's probably the most compact ones I've seen in vanilla
Thats awesome - thanks for letting me know! Mods would remove some of the limitations but I did what I could :)
@@adeadkid my stacks are massive its like the size of a quarter of a tile but i use tunnels so i can build zoning on top
Great tutorial!
The only problem is when you fast-forward the C:S music is making my ears bleed 😵
Thanks Nate, I'm glad it was helpful. Thank you for leaving some feedback. I usually add some music in the background but not always depending on what's going on. I didn't know it was that bad when it wasn't there ... I'll try to have something from now on!
Do these industries gain you a lot of money?
Hi Vigen, good question! The income from the industries does tend to fluctuate a little bit. Overall it does make me a pretty decent amount of money. My industries probably aren't the most efficient right now so they could probably gain more if I were to spend time tweaking them :)
This interchange is subtly inferior to a standard 4 level stack interchange.
1) Tunnels are more expensive than flyover bridges.
2) The tunnels have sharp 45 degree bends rather than having nice curves at the ends. This makes the tunnels slower than they should be.
3) The left turn ramps should stay left of the right turn ramps to minimize confusion and for better geometry. This interchange puts right turn ramps to the left of left turn ramps.
4) You modified the interchange to make the left turn ramps enter/exit the highways separately from the right turn ramps. This introduces twice as many highway entrances and exits as necessary, and they're very close together which makes for lots of lane changing conflicts. Better interchanges make all turns exit the highway together, and only then separate out the left turns from the right.
Hey dlwatib! Thank you for taking the time to leave some feedback. Sorry for taking so long to respond. I agree - there are definitely some inferior aspects to this design.
1) Cost really wasn't something that I was concerned about. Obviously it would be more realistic to have considered lower cost alternatives but given how easy it is to make a lot of money I didn't worry about it. Others have pointed out my use of tunnels being unrealistic so I've tried to limit their use but sometimes they're what I think is best for what I'm doing.
2) The corners in the tunnel was something that I struggled with during the build. They should not be at such a sharp angle but I could not get it to work any other way. My intention was to have the interchange relatively compact - taking up around the same space as the default cloverleaf interchange. I wasn't able to get the geometry to work any other way.
3/4) Part of the design was more for looks than functionality! :)
@@jester.Gaming If you use the 2 lane highway between where the two on-ramps meet and where they merge onto the main highway you'll reduce the merging issues.
Thanks for the tip Nate, I will check it out!
Is this good 4 population 70000
I think it's pretty decent! I'm sitting around 100k right now in the city. Depending on how you build your city you can get the population really high ... but that's the thing about Cities: Skylines, it's totally up to you!
You Actually really need to eliminate the word Actually from your vocabulary, go back & count how many overuse times you've used the word. Everything else is amazing, hopefully my criticism will be applied in a positive aspect & you can address my pov, Cheers n Chills 👍🍻👽
hello again gasoline addicts, I would consider it more feedback than criticism and it is very much appreciated! Someone else actually pointed that out to me recently and I've gone back and listened to some episodes and it very obvious (and painful!). I'll be doing my best to use that word less in future episodes :D
@@jester.Gaming that's great, glad it helps, thanks for everything, much appreciated. 🙏😁👍👌🤘👽🍻
