  • In this video we set out to hunt red stags in the Orongorongo/Remutaka Forest park area just before the red stag roar/rutting season. We encountered some tough shooting conditions. Cross winds of up to 100kms didnt stop the 6.5-284 landing the 147 grain Hornady ELD-Match right in the kill zone twice. The tussock tops of New Zealand's alpine environment is hard to beat. With a pack full of back country cuisine, hunters element clothing and NZ's favorite hunting rifle we set out. We spied out many red deer, a few wild pigs and lots of feral goats.
Our gear list is as follows: Tikka T3 with a Sako 85 barrel. Arken Optics 6-24x50 34mm tube. Leupold Range finder using Strelok ballistics app. UGQ quilt with Big Agnes sleeping matt. Dyneema flycamping tarp, Bushbuck 36 slayer pack with bino defender, bushnell trophy binoculars. Using Hornady's wonderful ELD projectiles, brass cases and a CCI250 primer. Reloader 26 (RL26) powder. Leupold scope in the bag for a back up. Gerber Ultralight knife. DPT suppressor. All filmed using a Samsung S20 ultra smart phone.

Big fan of this video. Also watched your lightweight gear review which got me thinking!

Good vid and great that you guys are out and about - just seems to be this new trend of shooting deer and leaving the recovery for the next morning?? Really downgrades the meat and potential for blood poison is greatly increased...my gripe for the week

Good point yes. But the rimutakas by yourself in the dark is a great recipe for a broken ankle.
