Chasing the CPKC (KCS) Roodhouse Local through Missouri and Illinois

On June 15th, 2023, I headed to Hannibal, Missouri for a day of railfanning. The lines in this area aren't super busy, so it was a quality over quantity kind of day. Thanks to a tip from a friend, we found out that the CPKC Roodhouse Local was running to Laddonia, MO. The Roodhouse Local, officially L-RH101, serves various towns on the lines radiating out of Roodhouse, IL. This was the farthest northeasterly extremity of the Kansas City Southern system. This rarely shot former GM&O line is a mystery to many railfans, as there are only a few trains a day, and info is hard to come by. With the recent merger with CP, the image of the former KCS is fast disappearing. We were lucky to find this train running with KCS power hauling a nearly pure train of KCS covered hoppers. The train blasted through the Missouri and Illinois countryside at 40 MPH on sections of jointed rail. Enjoy this video of what will soon be a rare sight on the former Kansas City Southern.
