The Hawkeye Railfan
United States
Приєднався 12 чер 2015
Hi there! My name is Robert, and this is my UA-cam channel. Here you can find my railfan videos of the railroads all over the country, but focused in the upper Midwest. I mainly railfan in Eastern Iowa but I often make trips to places such as Galesburg, Dubuque, and the Minnesota Iron Range. I am also a model railroader with a collection of HO scale equipment. I am a graduate of The University of Iowa with a degree in Cinema and journalism. When I’m not posting videos, check out my Flickr page for my up date photos. I upload as often as I can, so please subscribe!

Chasing Canadian Pacific 2816 Through Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri [4K]
In May of 2024, Canadian Pacific 2816 “The Empress” traversed the route of the Milwaukee Road Southwest Limited through Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri. Dubbed the “Final Spike Steam Tour” by CPKC, this historic steam event was organized to celebrate one year of the combined CP-KCS-KCSM system. On May 9th, train traveled from Bensenville, Illinois to Davenport, Iowa on the CPKC Chicago and Davenport subdivisions, the first time a steam locomotive has traveled on the line west of Chicago since 1957. On May 10th, the train was on display in downtown Davenport as an official steam tour event. On May 11th, the train left Davenport for Kansas City and traveled on the Ottumwa and KC-Ottumwa (formerly the CP Laredo sub) subdivisions, the first steam locomotive to travel this line since Milwaukee Road 261 in 2005. This is 2816’s first time ever visiting Iowa and Missouri and its first mainline excursion of any kind in over ten years. As part of the tour, 2816 will travel round trip from Calgary to Mexico City and return, a feat that no other steam locomotive has ever achieved. I was privileged to capture this historic steam event for three straight days on lines that I have watched trains on all my life. This was truly an unforgettable experience, and I was glad to share it with my many friends who were also out chasing The Empress. I can’t wait to shoot the return trip later this month. Thanks for watching!

CSX 911 leads U703 on the CN Dubuque Subdivision [4K]
Переглядів 1402 місяці тому
On April 22nd, CSX 911, The Sprit of our First Responders, lead a U703 empty ethanol out of Chicago bound for Iowa to be loaded and sent back east. This unit, much unlike the current CSX heritage units, looks awesome! Truly 10/10 in the right amount of novelty while paying tribute to first responders everywhere. I found the train at East Dubuque and followed it out towards Dyersville. Despite r...
Chasing Union Pacific's Oskaloosa Job on the former Minneapolis & St. Louis Railroad [4K]
Переглядів 1393 місяці тому
On January 22, 2024, I set out to shoot the Union Pacific Oskaloosa Job (L-NM34) with the fresh snow covering the Iowa landscape. The UP Oskaloosa Sub runs from Marshalltown to Eddyville and is the former mainline of the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railroad. The M&StL was a class one whose mainline ran from Minneapolis through Iowa to Peoria, IL. The M&StL was bought out by the C&NW in the 1960's...
Three Days on Canadian National's Iron Range with B&LE Tunnel Motor Trio! [4K]
Переглядів 3465 місяців тому
In the first week of January 2024, I traveled back to Minnesota's Iron Range with some friends for three days of railfanning. While the weather was drab and the trains were sparse, we still had fun as always. The main goal of this trip was to capture an extremely rare sight in 2024: three Bessemer and Lake Erie locomotives running together. Like the DM&IR, Canadian National bought the B&LE in t...
The Canadian Pacific Kansas City 2023 Holiday Train in Eastern Iowa [4K]
Переглядів 5657 місяців тому
On November 26th, the CPKC Holiday Train made it's return to Eastern Iowa, running on the Davenport and Ottumwa Subdivisions while making several stops along the way to spread holiday cheer and collect donations for local food banks. This is the first run of the Holiday Train under the CPKC banner, though little has changed from the CP one. I was able to shoot the train at Sabula, Deer Creek, C...
Railfanning Amtrak, BNSF, Cascades, and Sounder Trains in Seattle!
Переглядів 1 тис.10 місяців тому
In late March of 2023, I was fortunate to travel to Seattle, Washington with the Iowa Pep Band to attend the Women's Basketball Sweet Sixteen. This involved spending five days in Seattle, from the 22nd to the 27th. This meant there was a lot of free time to explore the city, and for myself and my friend Patrick, much of that time was spent trackside. Our hotel was in the heart of downtown, so i...
Chasing CN L565 on the Dubuque Sub with a Grand Truck Western leader!
Переглядів 35311 місяців тому
On July 22nd, 2022, I headed up to Dubuque to shoot L565, the daily Dubuque to Manchester turn. On that day, Grand Trunk Western GP38-2 4927 would be leading the train. Trailing was GTW 4926, now painted in CN colors. L565 runs west on the scenic CN Dubuque Subdivision in the evening, meaning the train travels in perfect light for nearly it's whole journey. This, along with the highly variable ...
Iowa Interstate and Crandic trains in Iowa City, Spring 2023. Lots of action on the Hill Track!

Another entry into my series chronicling the trains of Iowa City. This past semester, Iowa Interstate changed their train schedule, and I was very busy, so I didn't see quite as much. However, I did see two runs down and up Iowa City's Hill Track. This is the interchange track that connects Iowa Interstate and Crandic. The track is very steep and runs right through several front yards! To see a...
WHAT YEAR IS IT?! Two Santa Fe EMD's on the BNSF Mainline in Iowa
Переглядів 630Рік тому
For three weeks in June of 2023, BNSF paired together two veteran Santa Fe locomotives to run on the Burlington to Eddyville local in southern Iowa. To see just one of these locomotives on the mainline is enough of a treat, but two is almost unheard of. This train, L-CHI663, and its counterpart 664, move cars between the massive Cargill plant in Eddyville and the yard in Burlington every weekda...
Chasing Norfolk Southern Roadrailer 255 on the Springfield-Hannibal District

On June 15th, a friend and I took a trip down to Hannibal, Missouri. After catching the CPKC Roodhouse local in the morning (ua-cam.com/video/e2Pg8auEatk/v-deo.html), we had lunch in Hannibal before searching for the train that we came down to see: The Roadrailer. Roadrailers are unique trains which eliminate the need for a flatcar to transport a trailer and instead mount train wheels directly ...
Chasing the CPKC (KCS) Roodhouse Local through Missouri and Illinois
Переглядів 304Рік тому
On June 15th, 2023, I headed to Hannibal, Missouri for a day of railfanning. The lines in this area aren't super busy, so it was a quality over quantity kind of day. Thanks to a tip from a friend, we found out that the CPKC Roodhouse Local was running to Laddonia, MO. The Roodhouse Local, officially L-RH101, serves various towns on the lines radiating out of Roodhouse, IL. This was the farthest...
Interstate 74 Bridge Demolition in Bettendorf, Iowa (with SLOW MO FOOTAGE)

Built in 1959, the former Illinois-bound bridge span of Interstate 74 across the Mississippi River was demolished on June 18th, 2023. This is one of the two old I-74 bridges, the second one being the much older but identical Iowa-bound span. The Iowa-bound span will come down later this fall. The new I-74 bridge is seen in the background.
The Hawkeye Model Railroad Club's Final Operating Session
Переглядів 444Рік тому
Founded in 2006, the Hawkeye Model Railroad Club was located in Coralville, IA in the Johnson County Historical Society Building. Over the course of 15 years, the club built a layout in about 2000 square feet representing a generic east-west mainline across Iowa. All locations were fictional except for Iowa City. The railroad also featured two branchlines and two helix's to staging yards. The l...
The Railroads of Minnesota's Iron Range

In May of 2023, I embarked on a trip that I have wanted to do for many years; to railfan The Iron Range of Minnesota. The rails of the former Duluth, Missabe, and Iron Range Railroad are legendary for their unique operations and rare motive power, and the region has become a Mecca for railfans wanting to travel back in time and find trains that are almost impossible to see anywhere else. This a...

Outstanding footage! I am going out there later this year any tips?
Thanks! Best advice is to watch the CN Iron Range ATCS/TrainMon5 server, which gives you all of the coverage from Proctor to Virginia on both CN mainlines. You can also watch the Steel Highway Munger railcam to see what trains are coming.
Excellent video!!!! Thanks a lot from México ❤
I lived just off the road the camera was set on at the beginning. Traveled that road from W Arrowhead to Esko/Cloquet many a time.
Nice catches!
Really neat video! I live 1/4 mile north of CN dock 6 and I fall asleep to the hum of the locomotives moving ore around. As a rail & shipping enthusiast, I feel really lucky to live here. The old CN ore hoppers have been replaced by new shiny, pristine ones - as of a few months ago. I'll have to keep my eye out for newer locomotives on the CN ore line.
Great heritage catches awesome chase and nice video
Nice catches!
been to the loading docks in duluth and two harbors. also been to hibbing minneosita
Thanks for sharing this! Well filmed and love the historical info.
UP brother?
hello, I am staying in iowa city near the iowa interstate mainline, I was wondering if it is worth going to railfan down there?
There are typically four trains per day. If you want to know when westbounds come through, check the Steel Highway Railcam in West Liberty, IA. Trains that pass there come through Iowa City 30 minutes later.
@@thehawkeyerailfan9406 thanks man
@@thehawkeyerailfan9406Ik this is pretty old but which direction of trains that pass through the railcam come through Iowa city?
Nvm I just read your reply again
Back in the ( i believe the seventies) CN built a few proto type oar cars using 2 50 ton hoppers and putting them on a tri truck articulating frame (one on each end and one in the middle ) don't know what happened with them or what problems they had with them but they didn't build any more of those cars.
Great video, the potash trains are heavy when loaded , 105 ton per car , the trains that run east and west in Canada usually have 100 to 127 potash cars and 6 units in the train.
Great video of Iowa Interstate trains.
Nice catches!
Epic
Saying on one hand that not one public transit rail line in the world is profitable, yet on the other hand, you're wanting to put people on inexpensive public transportation (rails). If it isn't profitable, it certainly isn't inexpensive. I am for the CRANDIC, but better arguments need to be made.
This brings back memories of freight train operations on the Chicago Aurora and Elgin.
The CA&E was a really cool railroad. It's a shame it wasn't saved.
@@thehawkeyerailfan9406 I sure wish it was saved. No transit funding agencies back in 1959 or the 1960s. If it had survived it would probably be very much like the IOWA TERMINAL RAILROAD today. The freight operations being virtually identical to IOWA TERMINAL.
It is pulling freights? I thought steam is pretty much only used in tourism passenger trains in the US.
Yes, it is pulling freight. While pretty much every preserved steam locomotive in the US (and most of the world for that matter) is used primarily for passenger excursions, large locomotives like 6988 are more than capable of pulling freight tonnage. In fact, 6988 holds the 21st century record for most freight tonnage pulled. Other steam locomotives like Reading and Northern 2102 have pulled large freight trains in recent years.
I plan on going to the iron range in April. Do you mind if I use a few of your clips (with credit) in my video and in some teasers upcoming?
Nice video, do you know how many trains come through a day on the Iowa Interstate through Iowa City?
Four road trains per day, plus the switcher from South Amana that comes out here a couple times per week.
great awesome catches and video of this CP holiday train nice horn salutes too
Wow! Great videos of the lights and sounds of the CPKC Holiday Train!
great awesome catches and video of this CP holiday train nice horn salutes too
Where was this tunnel at
Nice catches!
Seeing that the SZD class FD 2-10-2s the QJs were based on were built in Ukraine, the Ukrainian flag here is cool on a few levels. The QJs are awesome locomotives with a fascinating history. It's awesome that we have a couple examples in the US to enjoy! But, even though the 'americanized' look is nice, I do wish Iowa Interstate had kept the locomotive's original Chinese fixtures and adornments for historic purposes.
What a unique and obscure railroad. Thank you for uploading this!
Yeah it more like chompscared
Great video, and great catching the MP/slug working! BE SAFE!
Nice catch
Classic IC hill track action
Despite the title, this was NOT 6988's last run! 6988 received a FRA waiver to run under steam from Newton to it's new home in Silvis in June of 2022. You can watch that video here ua-cam.com/video/rwr02UvWNJ4/v-deo.htmlsi=Le5pAhk76Ga9EYmv

Don’t forget the South Shore Line between South Bend and Chicago-the only the passenger service is electric. The freight is diesel.

Nice Catch On The Boeing Train
Thank you very much! I caught that train on the last day I was there and had been hoping the entire time to see one. Definitely something that I couldn't see in Iowa.
The Hiawatha.
Great to see Grand Trunk Western GP38-2 #4927 still in GTW blue. Great video.
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice catches!
We get some of these GT geeps on the local job in Champaign from time to time. Always nice too see something a little different.
This is just the final run in the old location. They have already started building their new layout inn their brand new custom built building.
You're such an underrated UA-camr! Love this coverage of my home state, please do come back here again!
Thank you! I would love to come back to Minnesota, the Iron Range has so much to offer.
