I heard this song as a child and i loved it.The music and the voice is soothing to the spirit. The lyrics is powerful. It makes you realize that we are only here for a limited time on this earth so be grateful and be nice.
For 50 years, this song has been my spiritual meditation. A higher power using Jesse's tender voice and subtle accompaniment to calm a world of turbulence. One of those special recordings that can't be explained any other way.
And The Catholic Church used the song at Church in 70s,the part of the song that stood out the most was the lead and 12 string ,interesting about Valenti bio,bet he made some cash on that one.
When this song came out, I remember listening to it with my new friend, I was about ten, a few days later I heard that he had drowned in the wissahickon creek, I never saw or heard about him after that! As the years have gone by I have often heard this song, and have never not prayed for my friend.. it's my connection to him , and God! Peace...
Someone should find the isolated tracks of this tune, if there are any, and analyze them. Maybe Rick Beato can include it on his "What Makes This Song Great?" series.
Jessie you and the youngbloods done the song proud.i been hearing the song along time but lately i been really paying attention to the lirics.its a beautiful song.🤔🇨🇦
So for the people who don't know Chet Powers also known as Dino Valenti was a folk singer in NYC Greenich village in the early 60's. He later went on to play in Quicksilver Messenger Service in San Francisco for a few years off and on during the early 70's and into the 80's.
Thats the best band in Rock n' Roll history when you walk into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame what do you run into before you run into Elvis or the Airplane the Quicksilver Messenger Service along with some Cip's 🦇 👔 🔫 LOL and hollowed-out body 🎸
I loved this interview, Jesse and Connie are good friends, but I have never heard him talk about "come together" this way, thank you for conducting this interview.
I had the pleasure of hearing these guys live in about 1969 outdoors in a field in Vermont, a kind of mini Woodstock before Woodstock. I believe Jesse live on the Big Island and grows coffee today. Another fabulous song they did was "Darkness Darkness".
Brother John! The Youngbloods were one of my favorite groups coming out of the 60’s as well as Dinos, Quicksilver Messenger Service. My 2 oldest bio son’s are named Jesse and Colin respectively. Thank you brother for sharing. Have a great Wednesday. God bless.
Jesse Colin Young is very articulate and seems pretty humble and gracious, too! Very poignant interview! Thanks, John! I know you've already celebrated your Thanksgiving, John, so happy Thursday to come!
This song was channeled from the ethers. Jesse reaches and brings out its heavenly essence as did Chet God bless his soul. It expresses humanity’s consciousness evolution. “Cmon people”...
That was the soundtrack of my youth. Incredible vocals. That song and LSD entered my life at the same time. That's when the worm turned. I'm in my 70s now and I check your channel, Wham! Jesse Colin Young, and my youth just hit me in the face. Thank you both.
Written by Chet Powers a.k.a. Dino Vallenti. The song was actually a Kingston Trio type hootenanny song that was originally performed in folk circles. Vallenti had been a member of Quicksilver Messenger Service, and had served some time in prison in the sixties for some type of drug related charges.
Thank you for posting this session with Jesse. "Get Together" is and will always be a classic track. P.s.: I love the LP "Elephant Mountain" while my favorite song by the Youngbloods is "Darkness Darkness", which was even used on the movie "Purple Haze".
Prior to the Youngbloods, Jessie was a "folk singer". He would ride his motorcycle from NYC to Cambridge Ma for his shows at Club 47. His first Album, Soul of A City Boy had an amazing song, 4 in the morning that we LOVED!
If memory serves me, this song was first released in 1967, nothing happened, re-released in 1969 when the band was drifting apart, magic. Timing is everything when it comes to music.
When I heard the words: "You hold the key to love and fear", I did a back flip in eternity while drifting off to sleep. I had to recall the words carefully so I could identify the song later.
I was surprised I just heard the J Airplane version .It had a different ,( and most important lyric) They sang "when the WIND that brought us here ". When "When the ONE that brought us here returns for us at last" is far more meaningful... I was an atheist at the time.... That line pierced me, opened me further cracked my shell ( I was 12). The sound of 67-68. was an apt soundtrack for me and the school girls I grew up with, transforming into adolescence.
John....not enough hits is right...people forget good music fast or just take it for granted after hearing it for so long,I do not understand it but its a fact....people in my view listen to crap now, they do not understand Ambiance ,just volume. ya gotta remember that i love Hard Rock..saw Hendrix..The Who,,Ten Years After.. Dylan ,Zep...pretty much seen them all...ok, im thru with my Sem -Rant...keep em coming John.....ya got me!
Saw the Youngbloods live (circa 1971) and the band did not include it in their two sets and encore. Probably tired of it? I don't think they performed it live much during those years.
The return of Christ is alluded to in the 2nd verse: "Some may come and some may go We must surely pass When the One that left us here Returns for us at last"
Jesse was from Yardley Pennsylvania. He was a great friend of my father's Came to visit us In his tour bus, my mom broke her arm at his wife Suzie's mom's home. Cool people.
Jesse Colin Young is one of the greatestest singer-songwriters in American history with a dozen of the best songs ever writen and youngbloods deserve to be up there with the Beach Boys and the Byrds and Love and Doors etc.You just probably only heard one song on the radio and made that comment .You need to listen to the early albums like Elephant Mountain(1969)and Rock Festival(1970) etc,not the later solo stuff which can be pretty bland soundibg.
It is a very beautiful song
I still adore it Jesse!
I always said that get together by the youngbloods is the perfect Hippie anthem for the 60/70s
One of my all-time fav. Guitar solos.
One of the greatest rock songs ever recorded. Loved Jesse Colin Young’s voice.
I heard this song as a child and i loved it.The music and the voice is soothing to the spirit. The lyrics is powerful. It makes you realize that we are only here for a limited time on this earth so be grateful and be nice.
My absolute favourite song, the message comes directly from god.
Both lyrically and musically, one of the most beautiful songs ever, in my opinion.

Legendary and unforgettable Jesse Colin young.
I was born in the LATE 60's...and I LOVE this song.
I’m only 44 and this song has meant the world to me for at least 35 yrs.
He’s absolutely right-“astoundingly beautiful” lyrics and song....an enduring, timeless classic!
Someone should find the isolated tracks of this tune, if there are any, and analyze them. Maybe Rick Beato can include it on his "What Makes This Song Great?" series.

Excellent! I’ve loved this record since its rerelease in Summer 1969. 😎
Same here!
The Youngbloods did it best!

I just saw Jesse sing this tonight in Eugene, OR with his daughter. Wonderful.

Changed my life in 1969

I read ages ago that Jesse had electrified an auto harp to play on the song.
My real name is Joe Bauer...Just like the drummer
too cool
The sad thing is, Chet Powers wrote this song and made absolutely no money from it, having sold it for a pittance to pay bills.
I never realized Jesse was a New Yorker and that the Youngbloods were not a Cali band. I would have thought mid west or California spawned this band.
Jesse was from Yardley Pennsylvania. He was a great friend of my father's

Did I just hear JCY compare himself
to the Beachboys! Name 2 songs by
JCY? CRAP!
