Haha, I live in the north of Sweden and when I say the north, I mean the north! North of the northern arctic circle, you haven’t seen a real winter until you experience one up here! 😂🙈 Frozen lakes, frozen rivers, snow covered forests, northern lights, reindeers, the cold, the dark and the beautiful sunshine in the end of winter when spring arrives 😍 May sound biased, but nothing is as breathtaking as a cold winter day in the north 😌

I can say that Jämtland-Härjedalen is different, frozen rivers, frozen lakes, frozen roads, pitch black with no northern lights and rarely any good ones. 2018 and 2021 are both exceptions

The last tip is so true, when it's dark and cold it's all to easy to let it get to you! I'd like to add a tip! D-vitamin. Becaus of the lack of sun the bigger part of the year we all get some what of a lack of vitamin d this time of year. Actually mostly all need to add it to their diet this time of year. Sesonal depression might occur and other nasty things as well with the lack of sun.

It's not really all-day darkness, it's just dark for a very long time when the days are the shortest.
It's mostly around December and January that it really gets seriously dark, and it's only in northern Sweden that you get the all-day darkness.
But on the flip side it's also seriously bright during the summers.
And the rest of the year is basically a gradual shift from brightness to darkness and from darkness to brightness.

I live in Piteå and we've had -20 to -30 consistantly for about a month now and there is so much snow now it's covering half the windows on the bottom floor on many houses. We have real trouble finding places to put the snow in the suburban areas as well right now. It's really another dimension of winter up here.

Hey! I come from the northern part of Sweden, and then I do not mean Umeå but really high up in Sweden. Up here we have proper winter and fun winter activities. If you don't already know we can see the Northern Lights quite often up here. In the spring around Easter we go out with snowmobiles on some lake and ice fish and socialize. You can also go dog sledding or why not visit the world's first ice hotel in Jukkasjärvi. During the summer we have midnight sun up here. Hope you have the opportunity sometime to visit northern Sweden (Kiruna).
Another thing with us NORRlänningar, up here, many of us speak two different languages, Swedish and Finnish (three with English), some also speak Sami.

Yo! Fellow American living here in Stockholm as well, coming up on my 2nd year. For me the hardest part has been the more subtle effect the winter has on you here. I find myself lacking the motivation I normally have to work on hobbies and side projects, or just getting myself out of the apartment to do something. Taking Vitamin-D pills daily actually helped with that quite a bit. You definitely have to take care of yourself during the wintertime here! I'm so excited for summer again, though. :D

  • @Eyrenni
    @Eyrenni 5 років тому +2

As a Swede living in London (hint: we barely see minus degrees of enough snow to dust the ground. Ever.) I actually miss these types of winter. Colder, definitely, but that's nothing good clothes can't fix. In Swedish we say "det finns inget dåligt väder, bara dåliga kläder" ("there's no bad weather, only bad clothing") and I do agree with that. You can definitely enjoy snowy, cold winters. I also really like ice skating, especially if you have the freedom of space on a large expanse of frozen water rather than the restricted space on an ice rink. With enough people, that isn't enough space.

I flew from 32 C equator to spend 2 weeks in Kiruna and Skellefteå last month, if I could survive the weather, most people should be alright, ha...

Sweden shares the same brutal winter humidity and cold on par with Prince Rupert, British Columbia or worse yet Toronto, Ontario. There are different climates in different parts of Sweden, so saying "swedish winter" is oversimplified.
For instance, here in the west we don't get much snow and it's a bit warmer than in Stockholm, so winter is a lot of rain. We had only one week with snow so far this winter.
The north is much colder and lots more snow.

If you have spent a winter in Stockholm, then maybe by now you understand why Swedes in general are obsessed with the sun during springtime?
December, in Stockholm: The sun goes up at 8:45, sets at 14:50...

Isn't the winter way rougher if you live in the midwest, New England or Upstate New York etc. than any of the 3 bigger Swedish metropolitan areas? Sure it is darker but I don't think it gets colder than any of those places. I live in Gothenburg and haven't worn a hat at all this Winter. Good video! I would also add downing d3 vitamins!

Dude. Love your videos and as a fellow American in Sweden I make sure to support. Just have to point out that the US is ENORMOUS and the Swedish winter, at least here in Stockholm isn’t that bad comparatively to lots of places I lived in back home. I even took 40 Swedes to NYC one December and some literally cried when we got out of the airport because of how cold it was. Keep up the videos but please remember that you have a very specific experience where you’re from that doesn’t reflect the entire country.

His Majesty the King of Sweden's letter:
"I was captive in Poltava. This was a way of death for me, I was saved. Danger occurred more powerfully before Dnyester River; there was water before me, enemy behind me, and the sun sprewing out hells... Water claimed to suffocate me, enemy claimed to cut me into pieces and the sun claimed to melt me; I was again saved. However I am a captive today, I am the captive of the Turks. They did me what the iron, heat and water could not do, and they captivated me. Merely there is no chain on my leg, I am not in a prison; I can do whatever I want... However this time I am the captive of tenderness, nobility and kindness. Turks embrace me with this diamond affection. I want you to know how sweet is to live among a nation that is this much generous, noble and kind as an independent slave."
Charles XII, was the King of Sweden from 1697 to 1718. He belonged to the House of Palatinate-Zweibrücken, a branch line of the House of Wittelsbach. Charles was the only surviving son of Charles XI and Ulrika Eleonora the Elder. Charles' subsequent march on Moscow met with initial success as victory followed victory, the most significant of which was the Battle of Holowczyn where the smaller Swedish army routed a Russian army twice the size. The campaign ended with disaster when the Swedish army suffered heavy losses to a Russian force more than twice its size at Poltava. Charles had been incapacitated by a wound prior to the battle, rendering him unable to take command. The defeat was followed by the Surrender at Perevolochna. Charles spent the following years in exile in the Ottoman Empire.
