The general public doesn’t seem to understand the difference between beef and competition. Everyone wants to hold Cole to his lyrics but they aren’t listening to him. Go back to Kendrick's verse on Control he was talking about being on a Song with the rappers he named and wanting to kill them. Drake and Kendrick have BEEF. And they happen to be among the highest selling artists. So a rapper of Cole’s stature saying he’s the best, and rapping at an elite level, along with saying that he’s with the smoke, warrants a challenge from a rapper like Kendrick, who’s also elite.
Far as I'm concerned J. Cole just ruined his legacy. He can never write another bar about being the best and he can never be part of big 3 discussions ever again. It's just the big 2 now.

J Cole is not being a man with this apology, peer pressure is an excuse, losing sleep is an excuse, at the end of the day it was him who made the decision to record the diss, you stand behind your word if you're a man.
