  • Low-Fi Track SPEAKER TEST
We have right now some of the best and newest tigers in town!
Any one of these Premium Quality Bookshelf Speakers would easily sound amazing playing high resolution great quality recordings.
But what about playing a vocal-acoustical average quality recording, heavily compressed in a low-rate MP3 file?
Forget shimmering highs, deep bass and articulated midrange... Here you have muffled dynamics, sibilants and edgy sound!
Therefore… Are they still able to bring out the “SOUL” of the music?
    In order of appearance:
    DALI Rubicon 2
    vs
    KEF R3
    vs
    SONUS FABER Sonetto 2
    vs
    B&W 705 S2
    vs
    DYNAUDIO Evoke 20
    Associated equipment:
Audiolab 6000A integrated Amplifier & DAC
    Audiolab 6000CDT Cd Transport
    HAVE A GOOD LISTEN ;-)

KEF R3 being compared to a Dynaudio Evoke is nuts.

  • @SoundSommelier
    @SoundSommelier  5 років тому +66

    Now It’s my turn! ;-)
    These are my preferences:
    1. Sf Sonetto 2: with these speakers I can feel the “soul” we are looking for. Concrete, dynamic, full-bodied, in a word: exciting. Even with low quality material
    2. Dynaudio Evoke 20: they may seem muffled and closed-in at first listen. But in reality they have a quite sophisticated tonal balance. Insightful and “old school” at the same time. I love them. Not the last word in dynamic. Fantastic for prolongued listening
    3. And 4. A TIE. Dali Rubicon 2 and KEF R3: they are quite different and very talented yet. Dalis are easy listening speakers, immediately captivating. They give to music an extra-life and a pleasant clarity. KEFs are rigorous, no special effects but an involving musicality and weight. And (as someone of you noted) the widest soundstage of all
    5. B&W 705 S2: the good and bad of B&W is this: they absolutely shine with excellent recordings but they are totally unforgiving of poor recordings. If music is hard and edgy, they become in a while overly hard and edgy. Listening could turn into fatigue., unless you are a “wild” open-sounding lover.
    Ciao a tutti ;-)

Although the Audiolab equipments have really good sonic qualities, I think they are insufficient to feed that Dynaudios. Dynaudio speakers need a little bit more power to make them really sing.

May be. However I auditioned Evoke 20s feeded by many amps and their wonderful laid-back, relaxed presentation never changed substantially

    • @hclandscapes
      @hclandscapes 5 років тому

I have never found the B&W's to cause listening fatigue quite the opposite in fact i find them to be quite warm and nicely detailed,
I have owned the CM series and now the newer 700 series,
To my ears the most fatiguing sound i have ever experienced was from the Tannoy XT8F's , i tried different amps and nothing seemed to smooth out the forward treble and sibilance from these speakers,
I also remembered demoing some KEF R500's and found them to be a little harsh too, When i moved over to B&W everything seemed to smooth out but still keeping crystal clear clarity, but i guess sound quality is very subjective.

I dont reel like ranking because the style is so different and everyone have their own taste.
Dali has a clear Sound but also very light.
With KEF I enjoy the drive of the Music
The Sonus has a great balance between instruments and the Singer.
The B&W has the Best sounding vocal and the most punchy rythm.
The Dynaudio - at frist very neutral but actually I didnt hear the speakers - only the Music.

I didn't want them to be, because I had my heart set on something else, but... the Dali's are a clear winner for me - a lot more open, rhythmic and detailed than the rest. From the start of the track you can hear the extra detail of the drums and especially the cymbals. That combined with the full, defined bass, carry you through the track with more groove and life than the others. The mids are clear, uncoloured and don't get lost in that extra rhythmic ability. There's more air in the overall sound than the others, the others sound a bit muddled in comparison. But it's that next level of rhythmic timing/good time beat that's sold them to me. The Dalis made my foot tap, the others didn't.

@@randytrinh86 Sound isn’t harsh, you’re just used to a sound that has loads of BOOM and not enough midrange.
Before I worked in the HiFi store I work now, the same thing happened to me. I used to think speakers sounded harsh and didn’t have enough bass.
3 years later and lord has my perception of sound changed?
Guess what I was using to playback my music beforehand? BOSE SOUNDLINK MINI 2. I thought it was god’s gift to earth. It was just BOSE’s sound signature of boosted bass and no mids that I was used to.

Very good video thank you. I came from KEF, then for me this is the 1st choice, but if you want something less bright you can listen Sonus Faber (warmer) or Dynaudio (the warmest and most relaxing).

  • @viciadoemhalo3
    @viciadoemhalo3 5 років тому +58

Sonus Faber and Dali are the ones that sound more pleasant to the ear and I think what makes that is their lively midbass. KEF sounds very neutral, bass is very precise and controled and I think is it the most accurate of the bunch (well, you can use equalization to make it sound funnier). Dynaudio is very relaxed and soft on your ears, but is lacking some oomph and sparkle which some people might prefer it. B&W sounds just ugly and gave me a headache. I think KEF tries to make the most accurate speaker as possible, while Sonus Faber, Dali and Dynaudio try to make very enjoyable speakers in their own way. I don't know what the hell those B&W engineers were thinking. Out of the bunch, I prefer KEFs, since I like accurate speakers (and KEF's soundstage probably is the best of the bunch).

Regarding this test these are all great speakers. My favourite is 1. Sonus Faber because most balanced and good for long term listening. 2. Dali also well balanced and a clearer but without the feeling Sonus Faber gives. 3. KEF fantastic sound but for my way of listening voices could become too intensive. 4. Interesting to see you're using a pretty budget amplifier in the Audiolab 6000A in audiophile terms. How would you rate it? B&W 705 S2 - Very Bright & easily fatiguing (Extreme V curve)
    DALI Rubicon 2 - Bright (V curve)
    KEF R3 - Neutral
SONUS FABER Sonetto 2 - Neutral / Warmish*
    DYNAUDIO Evoke 20 - Warm
Every brand has a house/signature sound and there can be slight variations with in their model line-ups. The above is also mostly true for these house signatures.
Example - KEF LS50 Meta are a tad bit brighter than KEF R3.
The key is to select the brand(s) based on which of these signatures align to the type of music you listen to and for how many hours a day and then compare models with in the brand(s).
If I have to pick one solely based on this demo comparison, I'll go with Sonus Faber, fits perfect for my taste. I'll pick these over my current speakers, KEF R3.

Dali really gave a definite front to the song and for me had the most pronounced bass which formed a marked role in the track, the track had driving propelling force, Via KEF, tight sound, very behaved compared to DAli and was a little diminished and boring, via Sonus Faber sound became more wholsome with a nice breathy type of bass, via B&W did not like them had a overbearing feel, Dynaudio showed another side to the same track, smooth, detailed and musical without being forward and pushy like with Dali. Dali sound made the biggest impression for me because of the pronounced bass which gave the whole track lovely weight. But I can happily live with Sonus Faber and Dynaudio speakers.

Given that low-FI music is a very real world music situation for most of us (eg using Spotify as a source or listening to FM radio). This is an interesting test.
They all sound like good speakers :). And everyone's list of preferences/requirements are different and lets be honest this whole space is subjective and there is no perfect system. Buy want sounds good to you. Many people may prefer "easy listening speakers" to compensate for limited sound sources and non ideal listening environments.
Ok, my take on this comparison. The KEF's R3's most accurately reproduce the music source that you are playing, with the least distortion. I note that the R3's are a 3 way system and that all? of the other speakers are 2 way?.
In comparing the R3's with the other speakers, the other speaker sound to either ...
    - Some what "voiced" to please/are brightened up just like pressing the loudness button on the amp.
    - Created to be more of a boom box.
    - Have a poorer accurately when representing the singer's voice.
    - Have greater distortion/phase interference/less linear frequency response (i.e. they all "color" the reproduced sound more).
We can't tell from youtube recorded sound clips so much about stereo accuracy, unwanted sound residuals and dynamic response. We are all playing a stored recording/we aren't in the room.
    Thankyou to the Sound Sommelier:
    - For taking the time to do all these many thoughtful comparisons and posting them.
    - For positioning the mics far enough away for the lower frequencies to be captured well enough to be representative.
    - Having a great listening room/sound capture system ... there is very little "room effect" heard on the recordings.

The Sonus seems to have a little bit warmer (but coloured) sound instead Dynaudio are really coherent and more natural than Sonus.
Maybe I will buy the Dynaudio Evoke 20.

I've only auditioned the B&W & KEF in-person. The KEF was a huge winner for me in-person, very immersive edge of seat sound.
Listening to this video I would rank
    1) Dali
    2) Sonus Farber
    3) KEF
That said, listening in-person is the only way to determine the best one for each listener.
Videos like this are great to help me figure out what I want to audition against what.
    Thank you
    EDIT:
    2nd Listen from Chorus 1
Dali is too bright, loses some bass mids
Sonus too boomy, good separation, but loses some detail
    KEF just right like Goldilocks

Dali and Sonnetto are fun and vivacious. Very dynamic, very impressive. Tight and fast bass, airy and sparkling treble. Beautiful definition and separation. Dynaudio sounds veiled, less dynamic, less separation. At the same time the most natural of em all because of its superb driver integration. I spark up my Dynaudio with a Schiit 4-band eq. Wonder if I could listen to Sonnetto all day without fatigue.

@@cmessi first I the crank bass and treble on the Rotel a11 by 7db each. Then on Schiit Loki I turn the 1st knob to 1 o’clock, 2nd and 3rd knobs to 2 o’clock, 4th knob to 0-1 o’clock-depending on how bright the source material is. The combination of amp’s tonal boost and Schiit’s eq produces a lively sound from Emit10.

Can you compare speakers in a recording or not? We are hearing some aspect of the speaker, maybe their frequency mix? The 3D feeling of a speaker will not be transmitted. Also we hear the sound processed by your microphone and our speakers at home.
If yes, it's very nice and more comfortable than to go to a store. In the store I prefered the Dali, here I would do the same

  • @alistairhawkins9760

For me the order of preference was:
    1. KEF
    2.= Sonus Faber and Dali
    3. Dynaudio (very laid back but lacked a bit of energy)
    4. B&W (Sounded brash and disjointed to me)
I was listening on my KEF R300's so maybe not surprising that the KEFs won for me despite not knowing they were R3's until I checked the description.
I enjoyed to comparison for a bit of fun but there are a lot of variables at play here so of course can't be used as a serious demo.

    1. Dynaudio - most coherent sound here from bass to treble.
    2. Sonus Faber - strong mids and highs, great detail, subdued PRAT.
    3. Dali - strong mid-range, bass overpowers the presentation and is wallowy at low frequencies.
    4. KEF - midrange is thin and therefore the vocals have reduced engagement.
    5. B&W - the tweeter seems both thin and strained at the same time.

    3. A lot of details and long from fatiguing

I know for sure that evoke,Excite and Focus series are very forgiving when the B&W are dynamic and expose most of the imperfection. The Rubicon is known for excelent separation but still a bit revealing .. Have no experience with the Sonus Faber Sonetto..

It seems to me that the only speaker showing the recording is lo-fi is the Evoke 20 and it's quite similar to what a studio monitor would do. All the other speakers have fatiguing hyped treble with the SF being the least offensive. And as always, the B&Ws have a recessed mid-range.
