This is my favorite UA-cam channel by far. It's one of my only ways to see glimpses of automotive history. I may only be 22, but I have been in love with classic cars since I was a child which is ironic because my late father sold brand new cars and he we never much of a car man either.
If i found Jay there, i dont know if I'd be able to leave him alone. He's a really educated dude as far as cars go..... Not just for show with a few little tips and tricks about the specific vehicle he is displaying at the time.
To see more of these magnicent classic, the CCCA is holding a carshow in Hickory Corners, MI called The experience. It is held on the first weekend in June at The Gilmore Car Museum located on 90 acres in Hickory Corners Michigan. Come check it out.
Be interesting to know the full story of the Doble, 600,000 miles same owner, that's a lot of rebuilds might be some of the mechanics still around, Those guys were pretty good to keep her going.
jay,he loves cars.no matter country, how much money you have, how famous you are,he is a average well above average gear head with all his knowledge and respect not only for the cars but the people who built them/restored them,or able to buy.i can just imagine so many celebs bragging about owning X better than yours etc, real snobbish thing in one of the events.jay is just a guy i think we would all like to have a beer with. talk cars.also he is great at explaining, talk show experience helps here
Its interesting the gentleman with the white hat who owned the yellow car that talked about Tom Mix with Jay. Tom Mix was also present at Wyatt Earps funeral. In fact at the end of the movie Tombstone this was discussed by the narrator. who I believe was Robert Mitchum. Robert Mitchum told the audience when Wyatt Earp passed away that at the funeral were several motion picture stars. He named a few including Tom Mix. The last thing he said was "Tom Mix wept." So apparently they were pretty good friends.
It depends on the model steam car. Most took half an hour of boiling the water, and even after you drove off they didn't hit their max capacity for another 30 minutes. The very last steamcar ever made could take-off in as little as 5 minutes. Watch Jay's other videos to see the startup in action .
Nope, it isn't. "Driving his single-seat roadster along a straight desert road, Mix apparently ignored warnings that a bridge was out on a shallow gully and was fatally crushed by a heavy suitcase that flew off the rear shelf of his car." Source is the history channel, just search for Tom Mix fatal accident.
Tony at 4:05 kinda looked like he didn't expect Jay to open the door & show us as much as he did. lol Sorry Tony,it's Jay,you can't say no. Just be glad he didn't do a burnout. :) Always gotta love the steam cars. I had heard there were steam cars but thanks to Jay I can name some & know,in a basic way,how they worked. I look forward to all of his new vids.
he is gonna love retirement,no more tonight show.all cars! cant wait to see what jay brings to us,i always learn from him.most of the comments are positive on this forum, till you get into the fanboy arguments over the super cars,i try to just ignore them.enjoy your 60s jay.cant wait to see how many more babys you can save before you move on.i hope you have put some cash aside to keep you cars a working garage, and not sold of to vultures/museums,id like to keep see them driven and more cars saved
Do the owners actually enjoy these cars, or do they trailer them in, unload, put ropes around them, people say. GEE WHAT A NICE CAR YOU HAVE...WIN AN AWARD. Down come the ropes, back in trailer, in the garage they go.
A battery are always considered a disposable item. You can get extra points in a show for a original style battery but truly original batteries are long gone.
There is a video of him being interviewed floating around where he states he's not a fan of Ferrari. Furthermore, when it comes to that era of automobiles, Europe didn't really have much to offer by comparison.
Not every car, American or otherwise, handled poorly in the 1960s. In fact the "golden age" of sports cars and motorsports was generally in the 1960s, and the cars built reflected that in some way. But remember American cars extolled upgrade and modification, to contain costs. So the cars weren't the greatest off the lot. But Detroit still gave a flip in the 1960s, but that all started to take a header by the 1970s and hit rock bottom, by the very early 1980s.
I was thinking that but they didn't mention it. Seems like a little detail you wouldn't leave out. Seems unlikely he would have 2 the same year. I am thinking it's probably the same car but not positive. If a star dies in a car, that's a pretty significant part of that cars history. I wish the owner had of addressed it either way.
Ok, did a bit more research & found this very car. The born rich website does a history on this car. They say it is the car he died in. On the other hand I found variations in the account of the accident. Like you said, one account says it was a single seat car. Another account says it flipped & was seriously damaged. (that account varies on lots of things so I dont trust it) The born rich site seems to have done lots of research so I am leaning toward believing them in this being the death car
Jay Leno's Garage should be a TV show. I'd watch it. There's a very well resoursed and vocal anti-car crowd out there. (If it was up to them they'd ban you from driving and then make you get travel papers for even using a bicycle !) But just look at the vehicles in this video. The human-experience would be poorer without them. Long live the freedom to travel, and in this kind of style.
According to Wiki, he died in his 37 Cord 812 Phaeton. Even though they didn't say it in this video, it's heavily implied by other sources that this is the car. How many 37 cord Phaetons could the guy have owned? 1+1=2
On October 12, 1940, Tom Mix was driving north toward Phoenix on U.S. Highway 80 in his 1937 Cord 812 Phaeton. He stopped at the Oracle Junction Inn, a gambling and drinking establishment and then continued toward Phoenix. South of Florence, Mix came upon construction barriers at a bridge. Unable to stop in time, he swerved then overturned into a gully. A suitcase setting on the package shelf behind his head shot forward, broke his neck killing him.

When Jay Leno retires from "The Tonight Show" I want NBC to make Jay Leno's Garage a prime time show!

Has jay only got one shirt?!!!!
Yea,I did more research & it looks like this is the car. Apparently the accident did very little damage to the car
Jay do a review on the Citroen SM some day!
There is a video of him being interviewed floating around where he states he's not a fan of Ferrari. Furthermore, when it comes to that era of automobiles, Europe didn't really have much to offer by comparison.

"rolling thunder" Jay... you should produce a movie or documentary called "Rolling Thunder".
That steam car with rear brakes only? Great for drifting.
No Model A's here !!!!
Amazingly Tom Mix was killed in that very car!
*I LIKE how* James (yes, "J." is for "James") can never remember the titles of people whom he is interviewing.
the badges are there because tom mix put them there they where a gift from the king of denmark

He did already, its on the jaylenogarage website, though in poor quality.

Yeah, the car was wrecked and passed through several owners hands,
It was a gruesome accident.

he isn't much for Ferrari he has said in the past, he is more for Lamborghini
