      Viewtiful Valentine Same here. I don't hate _Lapis_; I hate that the writers don't give her a clear, definite personality. I had the same problem with Clara Oswald in Doctor Who--strong start at her introduction, weak personality throughout the later episodes.
      Maybe this will change after "Wanted" when Steven learns more about Homeworld and how the Gem War affected everything. Maybe Lapis had a bigger part in the war than she's willing to admit. After all, Yellow Diamond did specifically mention Lapis in the types of gems she considers useful during "What's the Use of Feeling Blue?" But honestly I'm hoping Lapis fulfills the function of the character that isn't afraid to tell Steven the truth, that criticizes his faults and forces him to grow up, and that is willing to tell the other Gems when they step out of line. Steven is still a good character, but lately his naivety and lack of asking the right questions is getting too much. He needs a foil to counter these traits, and I think Lapis could work in that role.

      Viewtiful Valentine She's cold and distant in one moment then quirky and "savage." The next.
      ((Side tangent) I emphasize savage because it's basically what she is. At least to fans. Not all, but those who like to write stories about these characters. To write a character you need to know who they are. You can't make Goku say something stupid just because he's stupid. That's simplifying what he is. All of the undertale fanbase simplifies the characters. Sans is a pun machine, Papyrus is "great" but knows nothing, Undyne is gay and likes anime, Alphys is gay and likes anime, Toriel is mom, and Asgore is a f**kboy. I don't want this to become a love or hate undertale thing, but I just thought it was a nice similarity between steven universe and undertale. A lot of people say the characters are complex, but then they simplify them in the dumbest of ways. The characters' common sense is thrown away for "better" things.)

      I definitely feel like the Crewniverse has never really locked down a key personality for Lapis. They've had her be the stoic bad guy, the sarcastic side character, the love able goof or less love able goof, the villain the vitctim the hero. Her character motivations are really unclear as of right now other than her attachment to Steven and... tolerance? Of Peridot. She has no real connection with the Crystal Gems, and no real role in the meat of the story as of now. It feels like her character is squandered, and no one really seems to be able to agree on a character for her because even the shows creators don't seem to be able to. She definitely has some base character traits, like her protectiveness to Steven and her dry and occasionally morbid sense of humor. I like her character, I just wish she had more of one.

    • @Uniquenameosaurus
      @Uniquenameosaurus  7 років тому +143

      Yeah basically. Zuko's reasons are the fact he got completely dicked over, lost a parent, got banished so on and so forth. Mikasa lost both parents and lapis was trapped in a mirror for the thousands of year and then trapped in another awful situation for a couple of months. I don't see anything illegitimate about those explanations.
      I'm not saying that Zuko is a bad character for being emo or a bad character at all. I'm just using him to prove being emo isn't inherently a bad thing.

    • @SumThingFawful
      @SumThingFawful 7 років тому +2

      Ok, maybe I wasnt listening properly but from what I got from it was more inline with Drayco Makargo 's comment. If X is emo then why not question Y for being Emo as well. I think the main issue with this whole subject is the fact that people want a Reason for it along side with people just not liking that personality type.
      People want a character that is justified in having the "emo" personality, someone completely fucked over by life, and are disappointed by a character when their logical barrier/ head cannon of what it would take to get there. E.G fe fates Camilla personality is the biggest cancer discussion of fe, but its just 2 side saying whether it is or isn't justified.
      I think you did a good job outlining the main issue people could possible has with the character and why they act the way that they do. But the big problem that people need to get over is this "relatable character meme". All character need to be imprint able and relatable to me.

    • @omgasmallbox
      @omgasmallbox 7 років тому +29

      But people care about zuko for having fleshed out motivations, and more importantly, depth and growth, he changes, evolves, refuses to stay static, and is balanced out with flaws, while also shining in what he's good at, combat, he is a poor leader, he is reckless, and insecure. im rambling, but lapis got lampooned with character suicide in later episodes, like most things in steven universe, it has peaked and it's not getting back to it's best.

      Think how George RR Martin would utilize these characters into more compelling arcs that either end based on their motivations interacting with the world's motivations (a collective of characters moving pieces in the world + just random acts of nature) or have them evolve or shape someone even if they are never really that well-devised. Which is why I agree with your brotherhood example. All characters served a purpose. Hell even Kimbley and one-note Chimera group did.
      Characters should reveal themselves interacting with others. Why I loved Steven Universe was due to these very intricate relationships.
      There is very little that is utilized out of post-Lapis and Mikasa. The stories do not give them chances to really flesh out "why" they exist in the scene outside of very standard objectives of them having to be there for reason x or y. It's as if they're being kept in the background until the author says, "Okay Chekov's gun, your up to bat" or "okay, I think I've waited long enough, I can finally make an episode for you because your my reserve story. I specifically wait for the moment fans do not pay attention to you, to pay attention to you."
      There should be things for them to do suited to an interplay between them and another that progresses something (plot, characterization, internal struggles), or they should have a vignette or a story customized specifically to suit their attributes and display interactions between them.
      Your assertions are correct. And you covered Lapis enough, though however... Lapis doesn't really subtly reference her prior arc, that being in an abusive relationship and potentially being the abuser as well as in Jasper and Lapis trade places in their dominance at times within Malachite, stand-out?
      You'd think she'd have these tiny little nuances to her... something about the way she handles specific situations, gets "triggered" by certain things in the world, etc. Something. That references back to this event.
      As of now, she's just a transparent, boring angsty character. Zuko CONSTANTLY kept progressing with his angst. Raven even had her own arc and participated in a lot of fights. She displayed why she was worthwhile until she finally had an arc develop around her and her father trigun.
      With Lapis there's none of that afterwards. SU's crew.... doesn't really diverge from the POV of Steven too much and I think it's to their own detriment.

      Uniquenameosaurus I don't think many people notice this when watching lapis oriented episodes, but there are multiple hints of her change in character that are actually pretty major but you have to be paying attention.
      1. Throughout the entire series, she always shows that Steven means a lot to her. Look at the episode barn mates; lapis only gets involved in stopping the ruby ship that looks like it will do apparent harm once Steven steps in front of Peridot and swears he will protect her. In same old world, she trusts Steven's judgement when he tells her that Earth could one day be her home, and apologizes to Steven when she almost drops him when they're flying over the ocean. In one of the Steven universe shorts (I think it's called video chat) she sees Steven "trapped" behind the computer screen and immediately tries to smash the computer to free him.
      2. Lapis becomes more social. This one is less noticeable, but if you look at early season 3, she basically talked to Steven and that's it. Now if you jump to end of season 4, she's built a strong relationship with peridot, is able to keep conversation with the other crystal gems AND humans like Greg and andy (Gem Harvest) , and has even worked with OTHER PEOPLE to accomplish a goal (The New Crystal Gems). The last one is especially huge because in season 2 she refused to let even Steven help her when she was fused into Malachite, but now is willing to let others be involved, including Connie who she barely knows.
      3. She gets invested in human culture. She creates meep morps (art), grows food, learns from what Steven says about earth and applies it (she uses the name bob when they have to act as humans, remembering what Steven called her in ocean gem). In room for ruby, she even admits that she's having a hard time adapting, while it's impressive she's even able to do so at all when her backstory basically sealed her off from any communication for many years.
      I think there's more, but those are the main ones I thought of rn.

      Have you never met a person dealing with borderline disorder? Lapis has low self worth, and that makes her think rejecting people and self-sacrificing is the right thing to do. If you look at any time she gets vicious, it's when people try to force her to be vulnerable and let herself be loved. Up until Steven, the only moments when she's been able to feel self love is when she's been righteously fighting from the place of being a victim, eg when she first broke out of the mirror, or the whole history of gem wars. It all stems from the heirarchical abuse that homeworld uses to convince gems that servitude is the only source of their value. The SU team are exploring the psychological effects of systems of power, and how a in a society that brainwashes people into thinking they're worthless, people get set up to accept abusive relationships, like Lapis had with Jasper. Now that she's free from those abuses, she's entered a holding pattern with Peridot where they both distract themselves from personally growing to love and value themselves by watching TV and making art. They're both still in the middle of their arcs which is why they're so inconsistent! I've been enraptured by Lapis because depending on how her story plays out, she could be an example to anyone dealing with a history of abuse on how to break out of that cycles of self destruction.

    I don't think most people CARE if she's emo or angsty at all. I've never seen hate for it. 100% of the hate I've seen for her, is that her personality is inconsistent, she rarely gets the spotlight and thus is shafted to the sidelines, and has very little development. She's a weak character because when she DOES get an episode, her personality is all over the place, and so she doesn't really have defining character traits if you look at the show as a whole. In some episodes she's brooding and serious, because she's had a hard life. But in some episodes, she's goofy to another level (by this, literally EVERYONE ever means The New Crystal Gems, garbage episode) and has no resemblance with her further self.
    Where's the line in her character that's ok? For me, it's fine that she's laid back now, because she's living a relaxed life with Peridot. She just wants to chill, and that's fine. But The New Crystal Gems crossed that line, exaggerating her character to seem totally different, and it just didn't make sense. They did the same for Peridot. I don't know WHY the hell Lapis is on the sideline all the time when she desperately needs more development, but it really hasn't helped her as a character.

    • @thirteenfury
      @thirteenfury 7 років тому +3

      Dr. Caesars Palace MD It's also kind of suspicious that when the Crystal Gems faced off against Aquamarine to get the humans back, Peridot and Lapis were nowhere to be found. Um, hello, both of them care deeply about Steven, have a newfound respect for Connie, and have powers that could have helped against a metal spaceship flying over the ocean. If Peridot and Lapis get put on the bus after one of the most dramatic (and traumatic) events so far, no cameos whatsoever, their chances of being relevant to the story are pretty much over.

      Dr. Caesars Palace MD Most likely, but that's still pretty shitty in-universe on the Crystal Gems' part for not including them in an important mission. I hope in a later episode it bites them in the ass for constantly leaving Peridot and Lapis out of stuff. Like Peridot and Lapis are the only ones capable of going to Homeworld now. Lapis because she can fly and Peridot because she could fit in on Homeworld and utilize the technology to find Steven, unlike the other Gems who would be shot on sight. And the CGs beg them to go except Peridot and Lapis are furious that they attempted to rescue Steven without giving the barnmates any clue what's going on.

    "You'd expect people to hate Zuko or Raven."
    People like Zuko because he has a goal he is fighting for and there is strong depth to him. Yes, he can be dramatic, but he was hurt by his father and wants to be accepted. Anyone can understand that, and he is easy to sympathize with. Not to mention that Avatar used his angst for jokes, and made it funny! "I am NOT BEING DRAMATIC!" Was such a good line, god.
    Raven is angst sounding, but that is because of her aesthetic and her monotone voice. She isn't too dramatic to shy away from deadpan humor. Her depth also involves her father, but to a different end than Zuko.
    I just find Lapis boring.

      Nicholas Clark Not to mention with Raven her powers are controlled by her emotions, so even just talking in a slightly more emotional tone can cause her powers to activate. So keeping her thoughts, actions and even her voice in check helped keep her in control.
      But everything else you said, especially about Zuko, were correct and made sense. Avatar made entire episodes about Zuko to flesh out his character, anyone who says he doesn't have depth clearly didn't watch more than a few episodes of the entire show.

    Personally I really like Lapis. She's sacrificed so much and been through so much, and the reason she's usually so flat around most characters is because they've all done something to make her angry at them. The Crystal Gems kept her mirror for thousands of years and never freed her, but Steven freed her the first day of knowing the mirror existed. Peridot tortured her for information, which is obviously why she hated her so ,itch originally, but Peridots starting to grow on her. You can really see her personality showing when she's around Steven. Since he was so nice to her, she feels more comfortable around him. She's starting to do that around Peridot now, too. Plus, in Room for Ruby, you see a lot more into who she is as a person.

Both characters quickly became fan favorite characters due to being considered "badasses", but lost some of that popularity because fans thought they were too two dimensional. I don't like Lapis for a number of reasons. The biggest one being that she doesn't contribute to the show or the team, in fact she makes things worse for everyone, and no one calls her out on it.
    The fans praise her despite her many careless actions.
    A recent example would be Room for Ruby. They are knocked off the ship and into the water. Lapis could have easily used the water to capture the ship but, instead, chooses to laugh and brag about how she was right.
    No one gets mad at her for that. The fans love it.
    Slice of Otaku did a very good video on why he doesn't like Lapis.
    I like what you said too though. If Lapis had something she cared about then perhaps she'd be more bearable. It's a shame the creators haven't developed her at all.

      Fishys 1 "doesn't contribute to the team" oh yeah it's not like she stopped Jasper from shattering Garnet,Pearl and Amethyst. Totally didn't happen -_-
      Lapis couldn't catch Rubys ship. Ruby was only there for 3 seconds, Lapis wouldn't have made it or grabbed the ship in time.
      Slice Of Otaku did a terrible job of explaining why Lapis was a terrible character. All I got from that video was him trying to prove his opinion, in fact I came across a video explaining why Lapis is a good character, and it was equally as convincing as Slice Of Otaku, my point is that it's soley opinion based. I could counter anything you say, just as you can do to me.

    I think it's because they're both powerful and they're no fun. If you're edgy and sad because you're weak and powerful, that's interesting. But if a character's powerful, people feel like it's their fault for not solving all their problems. One Punch Man is depressed in an understandable way, and he's still fun. Sans is crazy powerful, and fun.

  • @kaleanteus
    @kaleanteus 7 років тому +24

    Something else to consider with badass powerful characters is that they rarely lose. That may sound like a duh thing to say but having a character lose or fail is crucial to the audience building empathy for the character. Mikasa's biggest moments of loss in the anime are the loss of her family and Eryn's "death". In both cases she immediately gets that thing back in a way. She gets a new family and Eren isn't really dead. This undercuts our empathy for her losses. I think it's fine to have a character who has an objective if we see them fail or at least struggle significantly to achieve that objective. That's what makes Zuko so endearing. He tries so hard against incredible hardship and often fails and is often hurt by those failures. But he gets back up and tries harder.

    I think what a lot of people who hate Lapis forget is that there's a thing such as layers.
    People act differently depending on who or how many people they're with. And the way they act can change overtime depending on their bond with different people. Which would explain why she's caring towards Steven, yet aloof when around the crystal gems.
    Lapis doesn't have a personality thats all weird and self contradicting. She just changes a lot depending on who's she with. And that's pretty justified considering she was abandoned by her allies once...

    Mikasa has a huge character in her feelings for Eren. She just has a hard time showing those emotions. That's what's gonna make her expressing her love for Eren all the more satisfying when that scene comes

    • @SocraticMayhem
      @SocraticMayhem 7 років тому +16

      Wade I feel like characters shouldn't be written as stereotypes though. I mean, you could summarize what she is in a few topics. 1. She loves Eren, 2. She's a prodigy, and 3. Her backstory is tragic.
      That's pretty much it, and if a show is supposed to be serious then it should take it's time establishing Mikasa. We could also throw in a 4. And say that Mikasa is better than Eren at everything. That was established in episode one. Eren still hasn't even gotten his first titan kill either in human form. Lol
      I don't hate Mikasa, I actually really like her. She just has a lot of flaws. You can't really say she has a huge character in her feelings for Eren. Jut what character is that? That's not a description, that's just you stating something and not following it. When you say huge, it makes people wonder just how great she truly is. I'm pretty sure what kills a character is over hype, same goes for shows. SAO wouldn't have gotten such a bad rep had it not of been for the hype. In this case, Mikasa and Lapis were screwed over because they were way too hyped, but when it came down to it, they weren't really anything new. THAT'S what killed them for a lot of critics.

    • @WadeShoe
      @WadeShoe 7 років тому +3

      Ok. First of all, and I say this in the nicest way possible, SAO didn't get hate because of the hype, there is just a lot of overall bad writing with its characters and some/many of the scenes in the story are cringy to watch (I know because I watched the whole thing for some reason) It started with an awesome Idea but it became this ill-written fantasy for (approximately) 14-year-old boys.
      Secondly, you're totally right about me not fully explaining why Mikasa is a better character than she has been wrapped up as, but in all fairness, the show is deliberately hiding some of her character from us. Another large portion of her character is that she doesn't talk about her feelings. Because of this there's a lot we don't know about her, and that is a huge draw to some viewers. But one example describing the effect of her love for Eren is when we saw her feelings about Eren cloud her judgement when she is fighting Annie and causes Levi to be injured (further developing her character as we see her start to see how her obsession with Eren is hurting her ability to be a good soldier).
      In general the first season had to sacrifice quite a bit of character building for the sake of building this world and setting up Eren. If you look at it objectively: Mikasa has the same amount, if not more, traits than many fan favorites such as Hange who really just... loves studying Titans and that's essentially all we know about her aside from her getting angry at the priest during that one scene on the wall. She just draws in viewers more because of her enthusiasm. This obviously wouldn't work for Mikasa because she's constantly stressing over protecting both herself and her friends.
      I agree that Mikasa can't be defined just by her love for Eren, But I think the biggest draw to her is that she is still finding out who she is, she has been devoting her life to another person, and seeing how she reacts to finding out that she needs to live for herself is an exiting idea that will allow for her to fully flesh out and become the character that she was truly meant to be. The moment she realizes that Eren shouldn't be the center of her life, her character will be drastically changed forever.
      This show still has so much time left in it (It's basically just started!) and she is simply a character who needs a lot of time to realistically develop. In my opinion, if she was any different than she is in the anime right now, she would outshine the other characters far too much and the anime would suffer overall for it. Thinking about the grander scheme of things, the current writing for her is perfect for the overall story.
      (hopefully that "small essay" explained things a little better).
      p.s. In case you're wondering: Connie is my favorite character not Mikasa. I just greatly respect what the writers are doing and think that a well made character like Mikasa shouldn't be getting the wrap that she currently has. In all honesty I only like Connie more for biased reasons, there are far more reasons to be interested in Mikasa both for what we've seen of her and for what we've yet to see.

    I like lapis' character. Yes she can be kinda irritating, but just being enjoyable to watch isn't really what makes a character good. I feel like I know a lot about lapis, I understand well why she is the way she is, lapis acts like any sentient being would act if they'd been through the shit she went through, and that gives her character a depth that pre episode 24 Steven never had. It makes her feel more real. Steven was a dick even for a kid, and remember, he isn't like 7, he's a teenager, his actions and attitudes had no real justification past "He's a kid" and that's barely a reason as it is, there was no benefit to Steven's character that justified having to sit through his bs.

      We know she was captured and interrogated by her own people, we know she was left trapped and alone for thousands of years. We know she has an intense desire to return home, we know that as soon as she did return home she was again captured and interrogated by her own people, we know she was forced to fuse then spend months trapped at the bottom of the ocean fused with her captor. We know water now scares her, and her own power scares her, she finds it hard to trust people or interact with others and finds it extremely frustrating. It might not be a lot in the terms of backstory, but it's more than enough in terms of her character. For me at least.

    I feel like I'm in the minority, but I have no problems with Lapis' characterization or personality. It's not that her personality is inconsistent, it's that it's dynamic, and there's a fine line between the two. She changes depending on her situation and circumstances.
    That, and those criticisms of her characterization and personality from what I've seen are mostly just excuses for the actual reasons people hate her, that being the whole shipping thing with Peridot and the abuse narrative with Jasper, the latter especially being a hot talking point these days. Neither of which being flaws with her character in and of itself, but just her role relative to other characters.

    i can say that Lapis has redeemed herself in the latest episodes, especially Can't Go Back. You could see how much pain and agony she's been through which made her looks like an "angsty teen" tho hers is real trauma and depression. In Reunited, you could see her actually REBELLING against the Diamonds even if she always ran away from them (or scared for another war). I'm really glad that recently she has been getting good character development and I'm extremely happy because I've loved her ever since she appeared :')))

    I think Lapis may be a good character because we can see her change over the episodes, but I just personally don't like her so much.
    Lapis starts off as a sweet gen who turns out to be stewing in hatred for 1000 years in a mirror. This hate leads her to almost kill people. However, it's shown later that she still has that soft spot. Later, after the fusion with Jasper and joining the crew, she just becomes deadpan. Not her sweet self, not her angered self, just, nothing. I'm sure that's how trauma actually works, but to me it just seems like her character is always changing and seemed to have stopped at an old spot. People have character arcs, but hers is more of a character rollercoaster that seemed to have broken down halfway.

    You mention that Lapis has an objective in place of feeling, but I'm not so sure she has an objective? Why exactly did she stop chasing Ruby in that one episode everyone hates when Homeworld simply knowing Steven exists is enough to scare her off the face of the Earth? Why exactly did she fuse with Jasper when it effectively meant locking her in another prison for X amount of time when the battle was basically already won?
    Her goals are inconsistent and confused, and her actions often make no sense. And like you said, she also doesn't "feel" much. She just sort of stands around with no clear goal, hanging out with Lapis and panicking at the drop of a hat.
    I know this was made a while ago, and hindsight changes quite a bit, but there were quite a few hints that she had no real goal early on, too, like when she told Steven that it wasn't worth fighting Homeworld, before fighting a Homeworld gem 5 minutes later.

    I feel Lapis has good reasoning for acting the way she does. I mean, being trapped inside the ocean with a prick cheeto with mental damage from fusion kind of justifies the time she wants to spend alone.
    Also If I were trapped for 1000 years in a mirror and basically cracked, I too would feel anxious and pi$$ed off when the people I believe got me stuck in there came at me with weapons.
    So I don't get the hate. Also it could be a thing where a few people scream about it but in reality nobody really cares.

    my main problem really is lapis and peridot, her just out of no where forgiving peridot is like if she just forgave jasper of the CG after steven gave her a little speech.

    Personally, I really like Mikasa. There is the cliche that she is obsessed with the main character and Eren pretty much defines her as a character, but that's what makes the development so interesting. Further in the manga she doesn't coddle him as much or use him as a crutch, but relies on his abilities as a capable fellow soldier that she can rely on.

      Vault Dweller True. I like her for that too even though it's cliched. I still feel like they should do other things with her besides have her be with Eren. Do I want them together? Sure why not. But do I want to see her do the same thing over and over again? No I do not. It gets annoying. Like, if Eren jumped ship and wanted to kill humans, I feel like Mikasa would join him. She's nothing without Eren, he's her crutch. That's interesting. Except we don't really see her like that often. I count once after armin said he died. So hopefully considering what happened so far in season 2 she does go through some change.

    In response to asking about Raven's angsty character design compared to Lapis' (at around 4:18 ) unlike Lapis, Raven's serious and emo-like personality helped ground the other titans and help them through emotional problems that they couldn't punch and throw in a jail cell; whereas Lapis *isn't even shown in like half the episodes and when she is it's after her supposed character development, so she acts completely different and does nothing to help anyone in the show, with anything. Raven's personality not only helped the plot move the fuck along, but it helped the audience know straight away what Raven was like. She wasn't like "Oh I'm going to be a completely different character the next time I'm in an episode bytheway, if I'm even remembered by the writers, for absolutely NO reason at all, lol ok byeeeee"

    I think this relates a lot to a theory I've had on writing for a while. I believe in balance. You set off harsh moments with lighter ones. That's not to say 50% jokes 50% hard moments that are supposed to make you cry. It relates more to shifting it from a default 50/50 to fit your mood and style. Now relating this to the video and how this works with character depth. Characters need to have a goal and reasons to follow the goal. This particular application of the theory leads more even spread of this but that is not to say you can't create a character focused so heavily on a goal they forget or lose the why, the passion, and that it eventually becomes irealvent.

    It's weird the same thing happened to me with Mikasa and Lapis. I felt like the writers where trying to impress me. Which is perfectly fine if I already like the character but is off putting if I don't yet.
    Also it isn't always the characters themselves that bother me it's the people who like them, the type of people who are more likely to like Mikasa and Lapis (Teen age girls who think they're deep and dark,who spend half there time on tumblr) So it's more of a guilt by association kind of thing.
    It might be more of a guy thing but it's kind of like when you role your eyes when the beefy guy makes a touch down and a group of girls starts screeching. You don't have any reason personally not to like him but the reaction he gets out of people makes it hard for you to like him.

    zuko and raven are constructively angsty, while lapis is destructively angsty.
    zuko and raven move the plot forward despite or even because of their angst, while entire episodes are about trying to beat down lapis' angst barrier.
    zuko and ravens angst has been used as a tool to move their character arcs forward, while lapis' angst has been used to keep her on what i like to call a 'character plane'.
    its flat and goes forever in both directions.

    Of course Lapis is confused, self-contradicting, and tries to ve goofy and aloof. She has been traumatized by past events. She is trying to cope. Escapism, distracting herself, pretending everything's fine... These are very real defense mechanisms that people employ. Yes, inconsistent writing is partly to blame and yes, the episode The New Crystal Gems is shit, but with the previews for Season 5 it seems that there is still hope for concrete character development.

    Maybe Lapis isn't as powerful as we thought. What if she could have just stolen the entire ocean because her gem was cracked.
    Maybe it's exactly like in video games. The weaker the boss gets the stronger the attacks.

    Does no one ever argue that Lapis was cracked, pissed, and completely emotionally destroyed by being entrapped in a mirror for five thousand years because of the war that the Crystal Gems caused for no reason.
    If I was imprisoned for a long time because of traitors I would probably not Give A Fuck about them and anyone associated with them.

    You should acknowledge gender; notice that stoic or emo characters who are male often fan favorites, while those who are female are often disliked and dismissed as cold or 2-dimensional. This is not always true, as you yourself pointed out, but it's common enough to notice a trend
