Brazil has the rice and beans because companies are forced by law to provide a meal or food tickets to their workers. Government decided it would be unhealthy having Mc D's everyday, thus their stores ended up buying equipment for making rice and beans (workers can still opt for a burger as a meal, but culturally we usually don't really consider we had a proper meal unless we ate rice or pasta with it). For a while these meals were like a secret menu thing, which popularized it to the point they added it to the regular menu.
Great comment here. I just would like to add that it is still really rare to see people go to McDonalds to eat rice and beans. I have personally never seen it, and I am (unfortunately) a 'heavy-user' of Méqui (how we call it here).
Brazil does not have rice and beans in the menu, at least in Rio de janeiro, São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará or Bahia... Probably it had some time, but not anymore.
My Dad lived in Tokyo for a few months in the 1970s and being addicted to coffee and used to drinking cups all day long in the U.S., he was really glad when McDonald's opened in high-end Ginza because he could get a cup of "American" coffee for 100 yen instead of the usual 500 yen (though much better coffee) in Ginza coffee shops. He rarely ate the McD's food in the U.S. or Japan.
Jollibee is the fastest growing restaurant in the world. go try it out. the chicken, gravy, and adobo rice are great. sweet spaghetti is hit or miss depending on your palate
I know how much McDonald's makes the vision of future in my country. It was smell of freedom and a big new world. Childrens love it so much, and me too. We spend our school holidays on countryside what named "dacha" here. And waiting for father arrive to us after 3 days work with that burgers. It's not only food, it's part of our history and childhood memories. Nowadays i don't think it's something special, actually 'cause of war there's no real Macdonald's in my country. But they do it right in terms of marketing, because for lots of people here in Moscow it's a part of our identity in some ways.
One thing that Singaporeans travel to other Asian McDonald's for are the burgers with pork bacon and/or pork patties :') Singaporean McSpicy still rules hands down though!
just wanna say that in the Philipines, we see Mcdonalds as a fried chicken fastfood restaurant. I always order chicken & rice with lots of gravy. Spaghetti in mcdo is alright i guess but it's nothing alike with jollibee's filipino style spaghetti
Interesting watch even though I gave up eating McDonalds back in 2007! I’m from Philippines, and I think the spaghetti from Jollibee was inspired by the Neopolitan pasta that you mentioned in your previous video! You can try it if you ever make it to a Jollibee here in Manila, Hong Kong or even back in US! I wish they opened in Japan too because I think the chickenjoy is delicious, even though I rarely have it now!
The Economist has been doing the Big Mac Index for decades, so it's not recent. It's also not directly measuring the strength of the world's economy, but rather a way to compare purchasing power. (Although it can be extrapolated to indicate other economic concepts).
One of McDonald's most underrated amenities when it opened in Asian countries was the introduction of clean public bathrooms. Many Asian cities, even developed ones like Hong Kong, Seoul, Taipei, and even Tokyo, had struggled to maintain clean public bathroom facilities for years. It was not unusual for people in those cities to just go to McDonald's specifically to use its bathroom, and then order food on the way out. The success of McDonald's bathrooms pushed many Asian cities' public utilities and local restaurants to improve their own bathrooms just to compete. In Europe, McDonald's found success due to its American-style customer service. Most Europeans were used to receive stiff-lipped and cold service in restaurants, but the introduction of McDonald's casual and personable service was a game-changer and it even spurred many European service-industries to change their customer service policies.
There is a recently launched Jain friendly McDonald's Menu as well in West and South India which is, GET THIS, not ONLY vegetarian but also with no onion, no ginger, no garlic and no potatoes. It wild how different the McD (that's what we call McDonald's in india) menu is here in India. Fun fact, while McDonald's is now operated by one company in India, it used to be two a few year back (before they merged) operating on W&S and E&N regions. So half of India has a different McDonald's menu than the Other half. Also we sell Spicy Coke (yes you heard that right, coke with multiple spices in it including pepper, chili and cinnamon)
this video was brilliant (I can't imagine the hours of research that went into this!). however, I think you missed one of the most important aspects in McDonald's success. it's the toys that come with the happy meal. one kid goes to McDonald's. he shows up in school with the toy and brags about it. other kids will spend the whole week bugging their parents to go because they also want to show up in school with the toy. meanwhile, we get used to going to McDonald's as kids, and then as grown-ups, we crave that trademark taste and keep going back for more. at least in my experience (in Portugal) this was massive. again, great job! I have watched every single one of your videos, and this was one of the best. really had a documentary feel to it!
When I was in Tokyo about 10 years ago I had the Teriyaki Burger, which was the breakfast sausage patty on a bun with lettuce, tomato, and pineapple with teriyaki sauce. Not sure if they still have it, but it was excellent. My experience with McDonalds in Spain and Scotland was the menu was exactly the same as the American menu which was disappointing.
The USA use to have cooler McDonald's, but too many of the Themed McDonald's had issues cleaning all the nicknacks leading to healthcode violations. There is a documentary being made by some UA-camrs. A surprising number of these McDonald's had animatronics, trains, or interactive experiences.
In Portugal you have a mc bifana and canned Sagres beer (best Portuguese beer), and soups. Also the big mac and mc chicken were actually bigger (vs in the UK), mc chicken was my favourite back in the day, very tasty compared to the UK version.
Philippines McDonald’s has spaghetti but also fried chicken - because of Jollibee. Jollibee had fried chicken because of KFC. Jollibee came before “McDo” so they offered burgers to eventually compete with the newcomer. Oh and McDo (and KFC) offer their fried chicken with rice (because Jollibee). When I was in Taiwan, they had the Mega Mac - I forgot if it was 3 or 4 patties instead of 2. When I lived in Japan, they had limited time special burgers that were available only for 2 weeks. And yes I’ve been to India and tried the Chicken Maharaja Mac.
In Brazil, paperplates are heavily restricted. So the Mc'D in Brazilia airport servs their food on ceramic plates and washes them like a regular resturant would lol
One of the best Mc Donalds burgers I had was in Paris, ordered a Big Mac not sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised on taste and quality unlike Amerikansky McDonalds where you may get a decent hamburger or not. Their coffee used to be pretty good until they upgraded to some fancy "dark roast" blend which isn't bad, though I still miss the old coffee. After covid Mc D's went downhill pretty fast, they removed the condiments, placed everyone behind plastic shields, half the time there's no one working up front which seems the be the current system of "customer service." Thier only advantage is there's lots of "Mc Houses" around and they're usually always open, a good thing while on long road trips.
Great and interesting video! But the music is sometimes very loud, especially when your friends reported from their McDonalds. I couldn't hear what the Thai and Vietnamese girls said.
The burger with sausage is like your "German" burger. That's not the weirdest option. They have a lot of seasonal promotions with different flavours and add-ons to the burgers, like that first one with the oreo. They are in competition with KFC that has beef burgers, ice cream and coffee, So McD's in China has a lot of fried chicken items beyond chicken nuggets. They also have to differentiate with BK that is aggressively doing seasonal menus and strange items like burgers with scampis, and so on.
I think McDonalds is very important when traveling abroad. You never know what will happen, how you will react to some food, or maybe you get sick. McDonalds can be that trusty standby that you and your body understand if the going gets tough for whatever reason. I also live in Chicago near the McDonalds Headquarters and they have a rotating Global McDonalds menu. They switch it up every 3-4 months. Right now one of the burgers is the Samurai McSpicy and it is from Thailand.
only thing with McDonald's is that, you never feel like you ate to your fullest, it's is a lot costly in India and, it goes like this, you eat a meal and you feel like you ate nothing, I have to tell them, McDonald's have perfected the fries
maybe you should try some jollibee and tell us about it. and the mcspaghetti was copied by mcdonalds coz they saw that fast food spaghetti in the philippines was so successful that they had to make one of their own.
Ive lived in several countries in Africa where there were no McDonalds. Ghana, for example, has KFC and Pizza Hut, but no McDonalds. Curious why that is.
Note Hungary(budapest) was never part of the soviet union, it was a seperate communist country although the soviet goverment had a lot of control over the communist Hungarian goverment
This is great video but even hear in the USA McDonald's isn't that inclusive. I've never seen a PRIDE or LGBT flag on any of their social media accounts or used in an ads.
It’s a wrong assumption that all Hindus are Vegetarian. Many Hindus eat meat. Beef, Mutton or Chicken. More Hindus in North India tend to be Vegetarian. Hindus in Gujarat are mostly vegetarian. Hindus in the East or south can be non- vegetarian. Do your own research and don’t just buy into western perception of the world.
your channel is criminally underrated
Facts
Most underrated on UA-cam!
Wholeheartedly agree. The quality is unreal and I just binged his entire catalog.
And your comment

Oh Dang, 19 minutes! This is a delight. Looking forward to watching then as soon as I'm home :D

correction, second fastest in the world, but first in asia
I tried jollibee and.... there is nothing special on it, may be in Asia it taste better🤔

I remember when McDonald's first came out. They started with a 15 cent hamburger, fries (one size) and three flavors of drinks (also one size).
#boycottmcdonalds hopefully the number decreased by a third minimum

In Thailand, I think Burger King and Subway are better than McDonald.
In Brazil BK was a hard hit in MD, but i still prefer McDonald's
I've never eaten at Burger King, but I think at least Subway is better than McD in Sweden.
Great and interesting video! But the music is sometimes very loud, especially when your friends reported from their McDonalds. I couldn't hear what the Thai and Vietnamese girls said.
Awesome video mate, your food videos are top tier ❤
“That is some strong coffee” I freaking love that guys voice. Bring him on again 🤣🤣🤣

When I first lived in Germany McDonald's had different special items from time to time:
Los Wochos Mexicanos and China Wochen.
Whenever I travel I always check out the McDs in the city/country. So far, my fav is Italian McDonald's!

actually Jollibee was the first one to release Spaghetti in the Philippines in 1979 then McDonald's released their spaghetti in 1986.
DUDE great video, you deserve 100 times more subscribers
McDonald’s in the US is so miserable and gross. It’s the one part of the world I would never eat at McDonald’s.
As vietnamese, McDonald's in Vietnam only have 20 places in the whole country
"mcdonalds is the largest restaurant chain in the world". By what metric? Subway has more stores
maybe you should try some jollibee and tell us about it.
and the mcspaghetti was copied by mcdonalds coz they saw that fast food spaghetti in the philippines was so successful that they had to make one of their own.
Lets goooooo
Cool video. I'm with people and they're blaming me for wanting McDonald's now 😂😭😂
Yes, even though it closed in Russia they have their own version of McDonald's.
The world is now boycotting McDonald's 😉
As Indonesian , I jealous with Japan's MCDonald the most
Ive lived in several countries in Africa where there were no McDonalds. Ghana, for example, has KFC and Pizza Hut, but no McDonalds. Curious why that is.
wow this was super interesting! it's fascinating to see what companies will do to make money lol
Note Hungary(budapest) was never part of the soviet union, it was a seperate communist country although the soviet goverment had a lot of control over the communist Hungarian goverment
@0:57 lol, Africa
Could the American guy really not find a more unique item at the flagship McDonald's than nuggets?
If only mcds was actually good.
Could've taken the Russian consumer McDonalds money out of circulation. loljk that would be too mean.
2 words. Real Estate
This is great video but even hear in the USA McDonald's isn't that inclusive. I've never seen a PRIDE or LGBT flag on any of their social media accounts or used in an ads.
Me, an American, reading the title: Ya think??? 🤣
What? You haven't tried Jollibee yet? 😮
i’ve watched this video about 10 times now because it’s so good. but the chicago guy is insufferable
1:20 "American cuisine" 😅😅😅😅 can't put these words together... as an european I consider this a joke
