Sarah Beeny catches up with Martin Sutherland, who has now taken on an apartment in trendy Fulham. But will he make the same mistakes as he did in West Kensington?
Sarahs idea with the 3 bedrooms and 3 ensuites was a much better lay out, he could have let it for the same price or sold it. He's turned a great flat into a rabbit warren. The finish is great but you couldn't pay me to live in it. Claustrophobic much???
🤦♀️ These people are always so arrogant. He would have had to pay thousands to have someone with Sarah’s level of expertise consultant on his project.
Why would "young professionals" pay top price for a bedroom smaller than a prison cell, where you have to crawl on the bed from the end, can't even have a night table, and can't open a window? Hardly high-end. But what does Sarah know? What a silly goof this guy is.
This guy has a lovely building in a excellent location , but he is basically turning it into bedsit land and thinking it’s going to be ok because it’s luxury !
Honestly people like this need to be realistic - young professionals are looking for convenience. This mean location is the absolute number one, second is convenience of the flat itself i.e. enough bathrooms to not queue, enough storage space and a good bed. Fancy tiles and hardware doesnt matter, clean and newish does.
I wonder the same thing when I watch one of these programs. I think they never listen to her because she makes too much sense. For some reason they think, oh she's a professional she can't possibly know what she's talking about! The people don't seem happy unless they have to waste a lot of their time and money!
A single unit in no way translates to finding a renter in a group of five friends or a renter with a large family. It just means you find a single person or couple looking for one large space, which many want and do not care about having kids or others to fill the bedrooms. That is definitely easier to find then finding 5 individual persons willing to rent 5 incredibly small bedrooms.
This was painful to watch , and reminded me too much of my husband who also wanted top end finishes for a tenanted property I bought......Initially baulked at renovating the parquet floors, but gave in to most of his demands.......needless to say 'I told you so.....' brought me no comfort in the end 😢. This is also why I think it's a mistake to rent out a house that was once your home.....leads to nothing but tears.....
I'd sell that first development, keep the second and buy a third, more stable property with more mature renters who won't tear the place up, careful to develop it more in keeping with the style of the second property; rooms that are not so cramped that you can't even open a window and more realistic budget & revenue projections. .
Oak flooring everywhere and the carpet on the stairs??? That makes no sense! Have you ever tried to vacuum stairs? Not to mention the wear and tear . . .
He's putting in a cheap kitchen into a high end house? The kitchen is what makes the house and it should be very high quality. No one wants a cheap, off-the-shelf kitchen from a big box store.
Sad to watch these homes being renovated not as a restoration or an improvement - but to serve the myopic vision of the landlord. Given the option to earn an equal return on a 3 bedroom house, Martin still persists in chopping up space to create unlivable 5 bedrooms. How he ever dreamed that "Young Professionals" would live there, is a testament to his lack of capability.
I am cringing watching this. Why would you not take good advice. I don’t know how you stay diplomatic. He thinks it will be ok -my goodness he’s totally in the clouds.
Each floor a bachelor apartment. When he retires, he can convert two floors for himself and keep renting-out two other floor apartments. If he’s gearing to the younger crowd, they won’t mind the stairs.
I love when she proved these guys wrong I don't know how long she's been doing this but I know she's been then this guy here he came out he disagreed with her oh well we'll find out at the end of the show who look like the fool
The title of the show needs to change to......I don't have a clue how to be a property developer. What planet is he on rich students behave better .....not......students are young people who are studying all day and let loose on an evening, rich or not.
He sounds pi$$ed, far too greedy and I would panic sleeping in those tiny rooms. And you do 100% need a rota in shared houses. Neighbours are not family, and there will be some who will not chip in unless told to.
He may be unrealistic, but I wish there were more landlords like him. In a nation full of money grabbing slumlords he's an honest man trying to give people decent homes. I'd be happy to rent from him.
There's a certain amount of satisfaction watching people that won't take advice from an expert fail horribly.

🤣🤣
How does Sarah keep calm when dealing with such people
🤦♀️ These people are always so arrogant. He would have had to pay thousands to have someone with Sarah’s level of expertise consultant on his project.
Exactly
This guy is greedy and short sighted. I would be ashamed to offer those tiny bedrooms!
This one was another episode almost too painful to watch!
Why would "young professionals" pay top price for a bedroom smaller than a prison cell, where you have to crawl on the bed from the end, can't even have a night table, and can't open a window? Hardly high-end. But what does Sarah know? What a silly goof this guy is.
This show is maddening! She is talking sense and the new developers are deaf to all reason! And they are risking their life savings. Aarrrggghh!
Glad to see I'm not the only one who have found this painful to watch! This guy is ridiculous! (and vaguely hilarious, if you just let it go)
This guy thinks rich students are well behaved.... seriously?
Taking away the original timber windows for shit upvc is the worst thing anyone could do
Seems like the property would work better if each floor was its own individual flat to rent or sell that way.
This guy has a lovely building in a excellent location , but he is basically turning it into bedsit land and thinking it’s going to be ok because it’s luxury !

If her aim is to find the most hopeless, she is a pro at it.
This Martin is absolutely hopeless and is ruining what could be some excellent properties if he didn't get his silly little hands on them.
"His silly little hands"! Perfect! 😆
Why ohh why don’t they listen to Sarah ?????
I wonder the same thing when I watch one of these programs. I think they never listen to her because she makes too much sense. Why don’t they listen? And Sarah is right every time. How does she stay so charming. I want to throttle them
The bedroom's only have a bed in them, the fridge is small for 5 tenants
Fast forward to 2024 and these properties are worth millions CRAZY!
If she says do a 3 bed flat YOU DO A 3 BED FLAT!
This guy is a fool for not heeding Beeny's advice..wonder if he is still solvent 14 years on..

Most of these novices don't take free expert advice. Pity.
I'd sell that first development, keep the second and buy a third, more stable property with more mature renters who won't tear the place up, careful to develop it more in keeping with the style of the second property; rooms that are not so cramped that you can't even open a window and more realistic budget & revenue projections. .

omg.
Who would want to sleep in store room.
Where do their clothes go?
@@joannahampton3808 Sleep in them? Reminds me of the sleeping cells in Hong Kong.
There is something wrong with Martin
Why are they calling this top-end luxury?!
To someone like him, with his plebian tastes, this IS top-end luxury, even if you have to crawl on hands and knees to get into bed.
Only he is...
Sarah looks really young & cute with that hair.
He's putting in a cheap kitchen into a high end house? The kitchen is what makes the house and it should be very high quality. No one wants a cheap, off-the-shelf kitchen from a big box store.
After watching a bit more I see that he's planning on renting to students so a cheap set might be best.

How did this guy get this sort of money to be a developer?.
my rice krispies told me to do it 😂 ok
Those windows are so dangerous
Thanks for these, do you have any episodes from any other seasons?
Hey! Will be uploading S4-6 on this channel. If you check my old videos out you will find quite a few episodes from season 5
SaliusenEx great thanks
He sounds and acts like he's drunk.
Just can't stand to watch this guy again. He really is so full of himself.
like watching a trainwreck
I am cringing watching this. Why would you not take good advice. I don’t know how you stay diplomatic. He thinks it will be ok -my goodness he’s totally in the clouds.
Each floor a bachelor apartment. When he retires, he can convert two floors for himself and keep renting-out two other floor apartments. If he’s gearing to the younger crowd, they won’t mind the stairs.
Those two small spaces are way too small for a bedroom. Big mistake on his part!
I love when she proved these guys wrong I don't know how long she's been doing this but I know she's been then this guy here he came out he disagreed with her oh well we'll find out at the end of the show who look like the fool
To think what this property is worth now!!! At least a million
The title of the show needs to change to......I don't have a clue how to be a property developer. What planet is he on rich students behave better .....not......students are young people who are studying all day and let loose on an evening, rich or not.
The title should be "Schadenfreude For Homeowners" really.
Why on earth did he put a double bed into what was essentially not a bedroom but a large cupboard
luxury? for real? ..🤔 so i'd better stay on the continent
He sounds pi$$ed, far too greedy and I would panic sleeping in those tiny rooms. And you do 100% need a rota in shared houses. Neighbours are not family, and there will be some who will not chip in unless told to.
the guy is a clown
Why people are so stubborn without proper knowledge???
Free advice from an expert and he ignores all of her advice. He is so irritating to watch.
How do you spell "stubborn", Martin?
im sure this is an airbnb now
And with lockdown, 0 customers.
He listened to the agent because he was a man. 🙄
Smart guy! He’s spoton.
He may be unrealistic, but I wish there were more landlords like him. In a nation full of money grabbing slumlords he's an honest man trying to give people decent homes. I'd be happy to rent from him.
Why do Brits always furnish places they're selling or leasing in this show?
Looks better and buyers can imagine living there with furnishings.
It's called staging, and the Yanks do it too.
We in Australia stage as well.
Companies actually rent furnishings and more just for staging
@daro2096
What difference does it make, seriously!
Why waste your time on unteachables? Also: better bedding please!
Re. bedding - It would be difficult to even make the bed in that ridiculously small room!
A lot of camera time spent showing the young blonde guys working, especially shirtless...Beeny's type?
