It was great to hear you express your gratitude for your dads help and knowledge. Ignore all the haters. Your dad would never lead you in the wrong direction intentionally. He’s a wealth of information.
Also more info we never ran it came in a trade deal with a friend supposed to be a summit crate motor. It was a shortblock when we got it and it was supposed to be a good runner minus the smoke. I do ls stuff mainly and just wasn't something I needed. Sat for about a year before we gave it to Matt
Around 13.34 in the video took me back to when my dad and I did the same thing. He taught me how to do it.. Tommy cherish this memory because one day it will be all you have left..
"Motor School in Session" the Old Man is a PRETTY SMART guy when it comes to motor's. Learn all that you can from The Jeffafa and The Old Man!!!! GREAT TEACHERS!!!!
You and Allison are so lucky to have 2 great dads to teach you. Don't ever be afraid to ask questions, i'm almost 60 and If I have a car related problem I still ask other people I know for advice.
Tommy, I just so happen to have a extra number stamp set that I scored in a recent auction purchase. Its all yours brother. I'll get it boxed up and send it to your parents address with your name on it. That way you get your own set of tools started, so when you do this in the future on your own. Great video, I even learned something from the "Old Man" tonight.
I'm so proud of Allison, and Tommy as well, she's not afraid to get dirty.. That's HUGE in today's world.. Ya'll are making MEMORIES!!! Stories that you will share with YOUR kids!! Hang in there, you got this.. Same way I started out... LOL!!!
My dad wasn’t the slightest bit interested in a motor build with me growing up. I won’t make that mistake with my son, he is 12, and he loves a thumpin cam just as much as I do. No amount of $ can buy those memories. Good luck
You guys have 2 of the most informative knowledgeable dads to learn from regarding Chevy and Mopar cars/engines. Always something new to learn. Awesome content 👏. 💯👍👍
Would say you guys have a heart ❤️ of gold but, every one already knows that! Says a lot to end your video with shout outs to the ones I see all the time but never think twice about.
Tommy I really like the interaction between you and your father tonight you are fortunate to have someone there with the knowledge to teach you how to build Motors don't waste one moment that you have to spend with your father to learn he is a wise man he may not be perfect but you can learn a lot from him you and Allison both can't wait to see your next video may God bless you and Allison and your father may God keep you healthy and safe till the next video from the old man in Tampa Florida Big D
A word of advice, I would definitely go with the roller cam. I have had flat tappet cams wipe lobes and it's just more cost-effective to spend the money up front.
I've said this a few times learn all you can from Jeff and Bill it's free and also better than college. I love all 3 channels. I have run flat tappet cam back in the 70s and 80s in my small block and dint have a problem it's like what Bill said on break in the correct oil make sure nothing leaking close on timing and 2000 to 2500 fluctuating the rpm for around 30 minutes I didn't have a t-stat in it and had the garden hose running just in case it started to get hot. Bill and Jeff have all the knowledge that you youngsters will even need to go racing or have a beast of a street car or truck. Love what you and Allison are doing and keep up the awesome content looking forward to seeing the next video and as always be safe 👍
Tommy, you are a very lucky young man to have a fine woman like Allison that`s not afraid to get her hands dirty and really wants to learn about cars!! You two make a great couple, all the best to y`all.
I started watching src for the ole man's knowledge! Hes a smart choice to put on the channel and it will grow even faster and u 2 are doing great keep it up!
Dad sharing his knowledge is something I wish I could still have. My Dad passed in 95'. Such good content guys. Thanks for sharing. God bless you guys.
Considering I was 7 when the malibu was new and 1 when the nova was new , and remember when s10 first hit the streets . 20 years ago was the 80's I agree with Bill 100%
Like the evening uploads the most. Never have time during the day at work to watch. Love coming home and watching a new Gen 2, SRC, and Old Man's Garage video. Keep up the great videos and content!
Should be a healthy little motor man. If you run the vortec heads a little tip to run a decent cam is to install ls beehive valve springs and retainers and id toss in a lunati barebones cam kit in it and it would have a nice chop and plenty of powa
Hi guys, just want to say great job on EVERYTHING. I spent 20+ years rebuilding engines as a profession, nothing wrong with a flat tappet cam. Your dad is right about the oils but they do make a zinc additive to mix in with the oils. Tell the old man he's not so old.
I think that’s awesome you guys gave the photographers recognition for there work. I myself feel that I don’t get enough as a photographer of the photos I take after over 10 years of doing it find it frustrating to this day and am still trying to make a name for myself.
Tommy and Allison u two r awesome Gen 2 Garage has become my favorite UA-cam channel to watch both of u always have a smile on your face and r so eager to learn!! 🙏💯
You two remind me of a younger version of Tommy's parents. I am so glad to be watching you videos and seeing the happiness you both have to each other.
Love the engine teardown stuff Tommy. Your dad is the perfect engine teacher for both of you. Cant wait for you all to get Allison's dart back on the track. Keep up with all the hard work and it will all pay off in the end!👍👍
Stick with your Dad Tommy he knows his Chevys and it will take time but he has a whole bunch of knowledge plus he's a patient teacher who will never stear you wrong
great Job tommy n allison , i remember when my dad n i rebuilt our first motor together, you will never forget that tommy, that was 45yrs. ago what a blessing.
I went to High School in the mid sixties.... Auto Shop was where the car guys got their education. I did 3 years of Auto Shop and the knowledge I obtained from two very talented instructors started a fire in my belly that has lasted me until today. I am now 71 years of age and the fire still rages within me. Absorb all you can from the DADS and tap into youtube as much as you can. Fuel that fire........there are a number of great technical schools to get an education. Good luck you two.
I love this content 🔥 especially watching your ole man teach these lessons that'll stick with you forever! You may see these moments as special and important as they are right now cause hey thats just how it goes, but you will later in life. Money can't buy these lessons and I hope you boys understand how so special and uncommon for alot of others they really are. Looking forward to seeing this 1 done
Always entertained with y’all. Your old man is super cool! And usually I learn something from him. I’d pay good money for your guys photography. Love y’all. ♥️
The old man passing down that knowledge tommy better soak it all in it makes me miss my dad even more he has been gone almost 16yrs in November god bless you all
Speaking from experience, I bracket race a true 350 cid 1 piece rear main 880 Mexico block. When I originally bought it, it had a crane Saturday night special flat tappet cam. Did great. Took it apart and had it rebuilt and used an Elgin flat tappet cam with isky lifters with the edm holes in face of lifters. Used Brad penn oil to break it in. Did not last 5 minutes on dyno during break in before the cam and lifters wiped out. What’s funny was the engine builder had told me that he had been hearing nightmare stories of flat tappet failure in the weeks leading up to it. I ended up having to, of course, tear it down, but all new rings, bearings, gasket oil etc and start over. However, we put a erson solid roller in it and this thing is still going strong. My point is, the flat tappet cores are not what they used to be. I suggest doing a roller cam, even if you got to find a later model 350 1 piece rear main block that allows roller lifters like your dad mentioned. That should be easy and cheap to do. If you do run a flat tappet cam, buy good lifters with edm holes, put very lightweight valve springs on it for break in and buy vr1 or Brad penn oil. Of course, after break in you will have to change springs back to what you intend to run, set lash, run it again, check lash again etc. From one young budget racer to another, I’d definitely look at a roller cam and not do a flat tappet. Even if you have to wait on parts and/or money to do it. Been there and done that dude…
Good job Allison I'm really proud of your progress in mechanics oh, you're a fast learner and you have great teachers around you so you're taking advantage of it and that's a very smart thing to do again congratulations and good job
I can tell yall are trying hard, looks like yall are off to a good start, yall got a bunch of good people around you, so just keep it up we are here for yall
Love to see you guys learning from the old timers. I wish my dad had that kind of experience. I’m on my own for car experience hence all my hours of UA-cam university
Wow!! The old man is arguing more than my wife today! hahahaa It's good to see you crack open that 385 and getting it ready to rebuild. Your learning and having a little fun.
Great video guys and gal. Im learning right along with you love your channel. Best of luck with the build, with your dads help and uncle Bob’s I think your in pretty good hands. I have learned a lot from the power nation channel the build a lot of engines worth checking out.
This reminds me of building engines in the basement with my dad. BTW got my Gen 2 shirt today now Billy needs grey shirts so i can have OMG,Gen2 and SRC because i don't do black shirts in the summer.
Nice job of working with Dad and Allison. Your dad would never steer you wrong with a budget build, he's been there. You guys a great couple and just have to keep these projects fun. Good luck with the engine, can't wait to see it go together.
You guys are all fortunate to have the family relationship you all have. Your each a part of a fine tuned machine that is a force to be reckoned with on the streets and the track.
Tommy you and Allison are awesome you are Killin it just keep it up it takes time and patience it will work out love what you all do and it shows you do to
Zinc (ZDDP) is the additive you are looking for although numerous knowledgeable people think the quality/finish of flat tappet lifters in the last several years are the primary cause of this issue. Never had a problem in the late 90's early 00's with 10+ flat tappet hydraulic vcams. Also - do not use excessive spring pressure.
I like how you're disassembling that engine step by step. Have a 89 350 I want to do the same with- cool to view before hand what I'm getting myself into. Good luck with the process, a very good learning opportunity for you and the viewers.
You guys did a great job I was so impressed The brotherhood the absolute loyalty between the two of you this is the way it should be you too are having the times of your lives I hope you two live your lives the way you want to with no interference and U2 will be unstoppable.
You'll like the 385 with vortec heads. Same combo I run. Just a couple things to keep in mind is without modifications vortecs are limited on cam lift to about 480. You can use LS 6 Blue valve springs and different spring retainers to get around a 525 lift cam. Shell Rotella oil or equivalent if you go with a flat tappett cam. Also need a vortec specific intake. Good luck on your build Tommy!
Love it you and dad work together, you'll look back someday, and cherish these times, trust me.I never grew up because I didn't have a dad or know my own dad,so,it's nice to see you close even tho he and Jr don't get along anymore. Thank you Tommy, you're a good young man,and dad probably has something to do with that 👍
If you can’t afford to pay someone, you’re going to have to learn to do it yourself. Be VERY glad you have people in your camp willing to teach you, and learn all you can
I love you kids, and I’m incredibly proud of you both. 👍🏼
@theoldmansgarage, proud dad for sure
Mr Bill you are a encyclopedia of chevy motors
It was great to hear you express your gratitude for your dads help and knowledge. Ignore all the haters. Your dad would never lead you in the wrong direction intentionally. He’s a wealth of information.
Omg, when your dad did the math, had me roll! Dang Tommy trying to make us feel old, lol.
The engine came from me and my dad lol. Glad it's going to live on.

The old man can definitely build that motor with his eyes closed. Listen when a wise man speaks!

That does look like a blueprint block tag. They keep amazing records on those engines and stand behind them if you are interested
Akk the best car builder started out doin the grunt work...it's a necessary evil.

Wow!! The old man is arguing more than my wife today! hahahaa It's good to see you crack open that 385 and getting it ready to rebuild. Your learning and having a little fun.
Thank God for dear old dad. Please convey this to my sons. 😂
such a great video and love to see you and Allison working on it!!!!

Been there many times. Hone it, rings and bearings. Up until my first LS I had never even run a roller cam, haha. Good luck. Really enjoy these videos
Good video guys, keep it up! Your learning that's what counts
You guys are all fortunate to have the family relationship you all have. Your each a part of a fine tuned machine that is a force to be reckoned with on the streets and the track.
I'm so glad pops stepped I'm and explained the block. Thanks fit all the information old man
Tommy you and Allison are awesome you are Killin it just keep it up it takes time and patience it will work out love what you all do and it shows you do to
Zinc (ZDDP) is the additive you are looking for although numerous knowledgeable people think the quality/finish of flat tappet lifters in the last several years are the primary cause of this issue.
Officer June pup is on duty … fun police
You are an unbelievable drag racer and the consistency is spot on!!!!!
I wish the old man was my dad I wish I knew half of what he has forgotten hats off to you bill I love your channel
Love it you and dad work together, you'll look back someday, and cherish these times, trust me.I never grew up because I didn't have a dad or know my own dad,so,it's nice to see you close even tho he and Jr don't get along anymore. Thank you Tommy, you're a good young man,and dad probably has something to do with that 👍
You guys are so lucky to have someone like your dad to help y'all through this process he knows his stuff when it comes to Chevy motors
I love learning from The Old Man and Tommy 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁
If you can’t afford to pay someone, you’re going to have to learn to do it yourself. Be VERY glad you have people in your camp willing to teach you, and learn all you can
96 was the first year for roller lifters in trucks. 87 was first year for one price rear mains.
Thank you Allison for calling it an engine and not a motor....lol. That my pet peeve.. Keep learning. Its such a great hobby.🤙🏻🇺🇸💯
