Jalen Williams is the NBA's Weirdest Rookie

- Jalen Williams is the NBA's weirdest rookie. Drafted in the 2022 NBA draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder, Williams has been making an immediate impact, helping the Thunder compete for a playoff spot and holding his own alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Josh Giddey.
Jalen Williams played for Santa Clara in college, and as an older rookie, the goal was clearly for him to make an impact from day one, and he's doing just that.
With plenty of upside, the OKC Thunder could be looking at another star caliber player in JDub once Chet Holmgren comes back round out their young core around SGA.

Not sure what happened, but there’s some sort of upload glitch at 4:41. Apologies!
I'm like wait a minute are we living in the matrix?
No problem. The video was still phenomenal. Thankyou
I thought I broke my screen 😅

GREAT vide either way!
When you realize that SGA and Giddey are already weird guards and now there's also Jalen Williams
Haha this is true!
As a Thunder fan I like Jalen Williams more than Giddey to be honest. As of now he’s the better player.
@@duffal0 smoking dick
@@duffal0 Damn you might be the most casual Thunder fan ever.
@@LankyWx I’ve watched every Thunder game the past 3-4 years except a handful, so nah def not a casual lol. Giddey is honestly a bit overrated by casual fans, not saying he’s bad, but he has stretches where he’s unplayable at times. Keep in mind JDub is older than Giddey too so its not surprising how well he’s playing.
They’re close, but as of right now JDub is alot more consistent and knows how to get to his spots better.
"Rookie stats wont shock you" 12.8ppg on 58% true shooting is enough to shock me
He is showing potential, but he still has a lot to work on. I do love the pickup for the thunder though. I wouldn't say he's shocked me with his numbers though. 58% true shooting is only 2% higher than league average for the SG position. And most of his shots are coming from the paint. That's going to inflate his FG% just a bit.
@@ziggzagg8878 being above league average true shooting percentage as a rookie guard is rare. Especially on 13 ppg
@@ziggzagg8878he’s a rookie guard being above is excellent
His steal rate is really impressive too. And a rookie guard scoring efficiently is really rare. Compare with Ant’s rookie season, Jalen Green’s last year (and continuing this year), the rest of the rookie guards of this class… he’s already ahead of them in that category. Really promising. He’s been hitting more 3s lately too.
exactly, proficiency at rookie levels is already hard enough to come by but his volume's reasonably high too & he's fitting within a lineup w/ two better ball-handlers & a lot of rookies do not tend to be particularly valuable in good lineups
Love him. Not only does his wingspan help him guard bigger players and get blocks from the weakside, but he also is leading the entire league in steals in 2023.
*for rookies. He’s like 16th in the league in total steals. Shai is 5th!
@@mattnoonan6519 nope entire league in 2023, up until last week or so
He😮
It's Anthony Edwards now
@@djweiss Its OG rn
He's already a very important piece of the Thunder's future. You can feel it with him - the team is not as dangerous when he's not on his game. He's been playing even better the past few weeks.
For sure, I like him with the ball more than anyone besides shai. I also think he’s clearly our best defensive player
@@Brickwilliams Depends how you define best defensive player if it's versatility then yeah I could see jdub but if you look at who are gonna put on the other teams top player every night it's dort no question gotta pay attention to the offensive fouls he draws too it's a lot. Also you would rather have him with the ball than giddey?
@@chronics3710 this is what I’m arguing, id rather have jdub guarding their best player than dort. Dort gets beat off the dribble literally almost every play. Last game against the lakers in the final minutes he literally got burnt by Schroeder 5 plays in a row and I was getting so frustrated why he continued to guard him. Sure he’s physical and causes chaos, but he’s not nearly as good at staying in front of his guy as jdub is. Jdub is absolutely lock down, dort is just physical and chaotic. And yes I think jdub is better offensively than giddey. With shai being hurt we’ve seen jdub run the offense far more than giddey, although giddey has been playing great. But it depends on the night and sequence. But definitely jdub>dort defensively
@@Brickwilliams I mean players talk about dort and that he is a top man defender I'm gonna listen to them
@@chronics3710 fair, but just watch when dort is defending someone on ball compared to when jdub is.
Now imagine all these versatile players (Shai, Giddey and JDub) with a skilful center in Chet and a great defender like Lu Dort, PLUS all those other picks… OKC could be building a dynasty
Chet isn’t going to help
@@emmanueltamenut5803 u damn right there😂
They always gonna be trash team
Okc had durant westbrick and harden already and did nothing imagine that
@@nbawinningtips U clearly don’t know what ur talking about cause Harden was a 6th man and would never develop if he had not left to the Rockets… must be a casual
Us OKC fans are so spoiled by this team right now. We’re watching something special!
OKC is such a cool cast of characters. Definitely the team with the best hair in the league. Hope they all stay together.
I think he is a perfect fit for OKC and it's mad-scientist GM. He is a high-IQ guy who plays team ball, athletic, plays defense, switchable, and also has multiple tools on offense. You say his weakness is long-range shooting but he is steadily improving! He is 33.5% 3pt shooter for the season but he is a 40% shooter over the last 2 months! And his scoring keep climbing. He is an ideal 3+D wing every teams needs. I see him an ideal 3rd man on a very good playoff team. SGA and Chet (when healthy) could be the core. And this isn't counting all the picks that OKC can theoretically consolidate to acquire a top lottery pick or trade for an all-star. I am not an OKC fan but I just love basketball and OKC does a lot of things true fans appreciate.
One of the most exciting pieces we've added in recent years, I'm already a really big fan of his. Definitely excited to see how he develops over the next few years. It really seems like he could be another super important piece of this rebuild if the coaching staff keep developing him well
He's just good at everything, so really he would fit in well on any team. The only thing he is really struggling a bit with is his three point shooting. If he works nearly as hard as SGA does during offseasons, OKC's guards will be a nightmare for other teams to deal with for years to come. Hopefully SGA will take Jalen under his wing, since their bodies and games are so similar.
He literally improve, 44.8% with 3.2 3PA in the last 10 games
When jdub spends the offseason with shai and his trainer>>>>>>> leagues in trouble
i think he could be a high % but not high volume 3pt shooter - others already pointed out his consistent improvement - not just a few games but at least 2 months worth of play time. His mechanics are a bit weird - notice how he almost doesn't jump when he shoots his 3 but his wingspan allows him to rise above defender. But, his release isn't superfast to be a high volume shooter and i don't see advanced skills like side-step, back-step etc.
As a Thunder fan, it helps that we have so many young talented passers, led by Giddey, that can make all these cuts look so effortless by delivering a pass right where it needs to be. That J Will to J Dub example was so pretty to watch
Then he drops 31 with some absolutely sinister moves 2 days later 😂
As a Timberwolves fan, I love the ideology of not building a team for just specialist but versatility.
Alex's videos are getting better every time
Jaylen is going to be special! Love his story of coming from Santa Clara now killing it in the nba for the best young team in the league. Great video Alex
its jalen tho :D
I mean clearly The Grizzlies are the best young team tho right?
He’s a crazy defender. Way beyond his years
Love it, keep up the great content!
Man, you guys have a crazy amount of talent already...add in (who I think will he the Thunder's best player) in Chet, and a million more picks...🤷♂️ another great video, as always Alex. Good job.
Nah sga that guy that’s his team
If it continues not working out in Atlanta, I could see Trae wanting to come home to Oklahoma.
Great video analysis man. ESPN needs to pick you up
He also loves to hammer the rim as hard as possible. Makes other guards lowkey afraid to jump with him
Watched every Thunder game, JDub is awesome to watch, he's a great rookie and an excellent draft choice!
he’s so good at everything, bro can shoot, drive, pass, defend all positions and hold it in the paint. i’m a bucks fan but damn I love watch JDubs, he’s definitely gonna be a big piece of OKC
i ain't gonna lie barely heard about that dude this season, and i can spot a hooper quickly. this guy will be around the league for YEARS to come. solid solid player.
What makes you be able to spot a hooper. Like what has to stand out
Amazing video, very sharp analysis on a guy who most will overlook until he’s a star.
great vid bro!
He has a really good feel of the game and knows his role. OKC seems to find some diamonds in the rough. Much respect for their scouting and player development
The scary part is what they’re going to look like with Chet Holmgren 🤯 definitely a sneaky sleeper team
lol Chet needs to put some weight on
@@everythingharsh He just needs to stay healthy. He's not going to be Shaq!
Great video.
I saw him person in Dallas. Him and SGA are impressive players, especially in person. I thought they were fast but smooth. That’s a weird combination.
Love the player and analysis!
EFG% at 3:14 for the three would be 52.5%, so it's solid and should a huge part of his game going forward.
Love your stuff Alex! If I wanted to start making NBA content, how do I get permission to use NBA footage? Or do I even need it?
So brutal that my Wizards took Johnny Davis over him lol
💀
non of the scouts knew he was going to be this good. he was a late riser in the draft and okc having so many picks they're able to take more chances then other teams.
@@ibrahimrose3254 Presti came out and said Thunder made Chet and Williams their top priority. Dieng was the luxury pick. But they took Jalen at 12 because it was their pick. Sometimes draft trades fall through so they didn’t grab him at 11.
I heard they traded for Dieng because other teams were trying to trade for the 11th pick from the knicks to get JDub
Talk about a bust! Ouch!
very good video !!!
Great video. I’m becoming a Thunder fan because of him Shai and Giddy. Such a young fun team with lots of potential. 🏀🔥
Very interesting video and analysis
Been following your videos for awhile now; and your content is great! Even for an old head like me haha. Enjoy the well deserved sub and keep up the good work man 👊
Jalen Williams is gonna be a star in this league
I’ll give this presentation an A+ with extra credit. Good job!
As a Razorback fan, I love the addition of Jaylin Williams- he is a great passer for a young center. He and Jalen have hd some highlight exchanges where JWill sets up JDub, who cuts off ball and gets a sneaky pass for one of those monster jams!
I'm from the same city as Jaylin lol he's a cool guy, and Isaiah Joe went to the same highschool as him. Huge coincidence they are both starting for the same team!
Isaiah Joe was a great addition for the Thunder
Jalen Williams - pause, increase resolution and brightness on phone - now I'm ready for your video bc he's the first player to remind me of Scottie Pippen.
AND 5:27 Tim Heidecker nice 😂
I have Jalen Williams on my Fantasy team and he is killing it!
If you watch him play you know he’s gonna be an amazing player because of his length and athleticism and basketball iq
Wait until you see his brother play. Much better than J Dub was at he's current point. Already projected to go number 2 in the 2024 nba draft.
Would be cool to do a video of JWill now lol. He's over exceeding expectations as the 34th pick.
Yeah he’s a weird one. He’s got some offensive skill but he’s not big, tall, or athletic enough to really be an impactful defender playing the 5. I wonder if he’ll eventually be a 4 in the future or if he’ll just be this small ball option that will help OKC play 5 out and stretch the floor off of the bench.
Whoever handles the thunder draft picks is a genius. They had Durant/Westbrook and harden and the current lineup could be monstrous next year.
It's wild watching these clips bc it's like I'm watching high school sets in the NBA 4 out 1 in motion or 5 man out open sets with lots of cutting and driving to suck in defense I mean it works but I just don't typically see it in the NBA
He is so good, felt like he could get anything he wanted when he played the kings
presti said it best, he looks for decision makers, players with good instincts and can read the game, high IQ players.
having the physical attributes and skill to go along with that helps but it's IQ and versatility he's drafting.
As im watching this he just dropped 32 on Utah
Bro is a top 3 rookie. And the 2nd pick in the draft didn’t even play this season 🔥
Great vid bro and yes he definitely seen more bigger than 6’5” also his body is grown muscles I didn’t knew he was a Rook he play really well I like those dous like the Js on OKC Js on Celtics
0:06 bro called standard 45 cut "feel for the game!" lmao
Without SGA these last 3 games he's averaged 20-6-6-2 on great efficiency, starting at PF when he's a SG/SF, and has had great +/-, if he had banchero usage and mpg on a poo team he would be ROTY.
By 2025 half the league is gonna be named either Jalen, Jaylen, or Jayden
I put him on my fantasy team about a week ago. He's putting up consistently good numbers 💪🏽
Love this, Lowkey my Myplayer is basically him but as a PG, good finishing and good playmaker, but terrible at the 3 (need to upgrade it obv)
9:44 recovery and block actually kind of crazy
kinda reminds me alot of OG Anunoby, I think Jalen's gonna develop alot of underrated offensive talent through OKC that people will look past bc of Shai and Giddey etc.
When I drafted him in fantasy (last pick), everyone in league joked how he doesn't even have picture
Presti also wants all players to be able to make decisions, like you said….. versatile decision makers is what the rebuild is built around
He measured 6'4.5" tall with a 7'2.25" wingspan. Crazy long arms relative to his height.
Kinda like Shaedon Sharpe from the same rookie class, also 6’4 but with a 7 inch wingspan and athleticism to play like a much bigger player
who do you think is the better rookie right now J Dub or Keegan Murray?
Watching this guy dunk is like watching a 70’s nba player dunk super old school vibes
I was hoping to say that to the way they used to glide first then slam second to show jump with me if you want to type vibes
Nice comment. With that hair and upper body, he reminds me of 1980s Michael Cage.
I love his game. A special player
I’m willing to go out on a limb and guess that Deadspin’s DJ Dunson watched your vid and it “inspired” him to pen an article about JW a day or two later.
Is nobody gonna talk about how there are 2 rookies named jaylen Williams on the thunder
What’s funny is I picked him up in fantasy for a injury and everyone was confused and I just sent it hasn’t failed me since 😂😂
J.Dubb is gonna be a serious problem for my OKC Thunders, his vision and speed are something to marvel at
Not that fast really, but that doesn't seem to matter in today's NBA.
@TriVos Ahren If you look at it closely a lot of good players (Luka, Jokic, Zion) are on the bigger side and dominate.
This team is going to be a problem if they’re allowed to stick together
Tremendous video
OKC should be called the Lottery Commission with all them picks
That cross paint leaner is definitely from sga
First time viewer here. Love your analysis. Do you plan on doing more on this rookie class? I feel like there are a lot of intriguing guys on crappy teams (any of the top 10 picks)
what about Marjon B.? He has so much room for improvement and I love with any team.
He has a ton of upside, OKC keeps hitting home runs in the draft
he’s in my top 3 favorite rookies this year. I like him, sochan and mathurin a lot
Gotta give some love to Kessler too imo
eh kessler is great but its just your nba big man who is going to block shots and catch lobs or easy dump off passes from rim camping kinda like gobert. nba is getting to versatile for that. not saying he is bad or wont end up becoming better but his potential is limited because of that.
Can't forget the guy over in Sacramento too, he's a killer
@@povertypadresfan4420 I agree his potential is limited, but for a rookie he’s an unbelievably impactful defensive player, already one of the better rim protectors in the league
@@ishyameru6232 Yea keegan been killin it too
His game is a lot like jaylen browns and he’s already ahead of JB This dude gonna be an absolute stud in a couple years
Facts, he can peak now and still stick in the league… people forget at Santa Clara he damn near played the 1.
New title: jalen willams is the most interesting rookie
He can play like bruce browns role in nets 6'5 guard sets a ton of screens runs all around the floor. Plys the roll man in the pnr also plays in the dunker spot a lot.
Shai being out really showed what he was capable of 🤯
JDub reminds me of Andrew Wiggins. He is a great player for okc which is my team
He dropped 32 yesterday! Great timing
Call me the wingspan guru, and this guy passes the test.
i think he and jabari will be the first 2 to become complete players of this draft class. banchero seems to be an extremely smart and finesse player, but not the type of player who you will use to guard the other team's best player. chet might be the best player when healthy, but that's a big if.
i think jabari will be a JJJ with some guard skills, and i think jalen might be like paul george with more efficiency.
He look like a real life juwana-man
Greta video!
Bro you gotttttta make a Shaedon Sharpe vid. He's a future star
Weird = good
He's playing even better since this video was uploaded .
Dudes been carrying my fantasy team
I swear to god a few weeks ago I was dude with the wig on be hooping
We gotta see him in the dunk contest
He looks like a new mysterious Anime character that’s being introduced to the show
I agree Unique is boring weird is more controversial = better thumbnail
Would love to see Chet holmgren playing this year with this team
Been playing well lately. He’ll be number 2 option in front of Giddey next year. I see Giddey running the bench unit.
Giddey should’ve run the bench unit this year. Unfortunate series of events for him
My fav rook... I was mad that the Knicks traded him away right away.
They traded ousmane dieng
Could be a Dwane Wade type power wing. He's actually slightly bigger than Wade.
Kuminga, sharpe, jdub is some very interesting wings
Another video needs to be done , cause the last 3 weeks ain’t been no joke 😂😂
I have him ROTY!!!!!
Paulo better and is the 1 option
