- This is the fourth video in our series on planting small ornamental trees in a new part of our garden. In this video I cover everything you need to know on the requirements, considerations, planting and care of this rather unusual but incredibly beautiful small tree, Heptacodium miconiodes, also known as The Seven Son Flower Tree.
Beautiful tree! They are extremely hard to located in the US, but I managed to get one last summer. The one I purchased was only a couple of feet tall, so I’ll have to be patient.
Yes, they do seem quite a rarity. When it eventually gets big it will be even more special!
Thanks for watching

Can’t wait for the next video. I’m trying to decide between this tree and a forest pansy! So thanks for posting videos of these two trees!
Oh how funny! I would love to
hear which one you choose in the end.
Thanks for watching

I planted one late fall in Ohio. It’s 10ft tall 8ft wide at top. 3 main branches up to about 2ft then splits to 6 main branches. Was 500lbs when planted. It started to bud out yesterday can’t wait to see what it looks like this year.
Sounds wonderful!
I planted this tree three years ago after seeing an adult version at a local garden tour. I love it! I have a small garden and it is interesting all year long.
Great to hear! Thanks for your comments

Have this myself, but am not 100% sure I really like it as the leaves hanging down make it look a bit thirsty. At any rate, I envy your having the space to plant and enjoy these trees you've been planting. Somewhat similar to Heptacodium, very tolerant of drought, very little known, is Poliothyrsis sinensis, which also flowers in summer.
Thank you for that, I’ve never heard of that tree, I’ve just googled it and it looks quite similar. Don’t think I have any more room but a great tip for others to consider this tree too. It’s great to all learn from each other and I will look out for it when I visit other gardens
Thank you
Jenny
One of my favorite small trees. It usually requires some pruning to achieve the best effect ( regimen similar to crape myrtle ). ‘Temple of Bloom’ is a newer cultivar that has brighter and longer lasting caylices than the species, although it appears to be smaller and a bit more shrubby than the species. A great addition to the garden
Thank you for your very informative comments
Jenny
Thank you so much for sharing your new adventure and knowledge. We are also going to be planting some of the very same trees this spring. I’m waiting for every new video you post.
Good to know, worried my tree planting videos were getting a bit boring!!🥱
This is a beautiful tree, looking forward to seeing all your new tree’s leafed out. I have a dogwood tree that a real show stopper, it’s a cornice Kousa dogwood Satomi. This tree grows in layers almost like a wedding cake tree, the brackets cover each stem from the trunk right to the tip of the tree. People stop by my house on a continuous basis for the full month of June that it’s flowering to ask what it is . I’ve been told it’s the most beautiful tree in my town . The other Bonus is the hummingbirds seem to love to build nests in it. It’s a win-win.
Oh wow, your Satomi sounds amazing, I’ve seen one somewhere before, hasn’t it got pink flowers?
Thanks for your support as always!
Jenny
@@MurphysGarden It is pink ,some years it’s a darker pink I believe it depends on the amount of rain we’ve had that Spring. John Lord has a younger one in his garden.💐
That may be where I saw it!
I’ve got to say it would be nice if Chelsea would alternate between spring and autumn shows rather than just focusing on spring.
Yes, I agree. The 2021 show was the first time we had been so that may be something to do with it but it really was special and very memorable. I loved the autumnal colours and focus on trees, having it at the same time means there is a danger that the other shows all merge into one in your mind but that one stood out!
Do you take away the pipes after the tree has established?
Yes, it’s just to get it through its first season.
The tree forms are soooooo expensive in Michigan
Oh dear, that makes things difficult 😕
Do you take away the pipes after the tree has established?
Yes, we may just keep them in for this spring and summer and by next autumn they should be away!
