If he plays the original marble machine song on the new machine, he can republish it as the remastered version.
The most work put into a remaster of a song ever probably.
i would love that
I think it's more than fair to give it a remake status lol
And it needs to be a single long shot, to show off the reliability. The original video was edited together from lots of takes since the machine wasn't reliable enough to even make it through the song.
@@paulogarcia9557 same
The progress is slooow but steady. Next target is to end the issue with the marbles missing the funnels, until i have done that i dont think we can achieve a perfect score. I also noticed that the score doesnt get punished enough for failed marbles, when rounding the score to two decimal points you couldnt see a difference. So i should probably alter the score calculation function in the spreadsheet for that. Thank you everyone for following the build!
These are the larger remaining steps until full completion:
- hihat activation
- Cymbal Activation
- plywood module for vibraphone (same design as for drums)
- vibraphone marble droppers (same design as for drums)
- plywood module for bass (same design as for drums)
- bass marble droppers (same design as for drums but smaller, trickier)
+ a lot of smaller extras, but it seems within reach i think!
Nice
In every way i see function which doesn't end catastrophic like most things so i only see victory
Have a look at the Tier 3 idea vault for community submitted formulas, Martin. ;)
Just take the time you need Martin, we will wait as long as it needs no hurry, no rush, no stress.

This man right here is my hero. He has the determination, the skills, the friendliness. He deserves everything he has right now. He works so hard, and never gives up, and laughs when he makes mistakes. He does all of this purely for his and our enjoyment. He’s been working on this machine for years, and isn’t planning on giving up ever. We love you Wintergatan. Keep doing what you love, and I’ll be sure to download that sheet music.

Martin, you should get yourself a thermal camera to keep an eye on the machine during these long tests to see if any frictions are creeping in anywhere!
+
Really good idea. Also provides the data on how fire those tracks are.
Thermal cameras are stupidly expensive, but some places offers rental for much less
@@custodeon depends on resolution and several other factors. I bought a fairly basic one just to find a water leak under a floor. Was cheaper than getting another incompetent plumber in
@@custodeon whatching this video on one right now CAT s61 this phone is a tool that I find hard not to use this phone was 1300$ and was worth the money
It would be interesting to see the MMX through a heat cam after a test
Just commenting so he sees this comment
Very much so. That could also highlight potential problems with it down the road. Martin should totally do this, even if only for its investigative value.
That’s a really neat idea
If a part has enough friction that it heats up significantly, you will definitely notice without using a thermal camera.
Could be interesting, it could spot some hidden flaws
Just in case you don't know, Martin has been uploading daily to his second channel (Wintergatan 2) with progress on the MMX. I highly advise you go check it out because he has done BARE stuff to the machine now, and fixe lots of things on it-- he's even done a test with the HI hat, snare drum and kick drum all linked up to the marble divider (which he has also overhauled as of the latest video)

Since you're tracking stats in excel: A fun and informative stat to track in your spreadsheet is the MTTF, mean time to fail. You can factor how long it runs for, how many failures you get, and do the math to show how often it will fail and the mean period. Once you have all the development done, you could also track mean time to repair (MTTR) or how long it takes to repair that failure. Adding MTTF and MTTR will get you Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) which is the time from when it finished the previous repair and was working properly, until the point where it is returned to service after the next repair is complete.
You've probably been told this countless times, but those plywood threads are not going to hold up well over time, especially if you're taking the screws out repeatedly. You can get special inserts that you can press and/or glue in that will provide a metal thread that will last forever.
Fortunately you can just drill out the existing threaded hole with a hand drill and stick the insert in there, so it's not like you're making a mistake here. But keep those in mind for when these connections start getting sloppy.
I think this is kind of a prototyping stage. At some point he’ll have to add threaded inserts, but right now he’s just getting parts in there and seeing what works. I’m sure he’ll put it off though and it’ll come to bite him in the ass.
He's going to need to replace them eventually anyways because the wear the marbles cause by rubbing the pieces.
@@1up4evr7 That's the purpose of the graphite.
He's secretly working with IKEA to sell a 'build your own MMX' kit.
or you can always just go for nuts. not as elegant but works too
"Snare Drum Nightmare" sounds like a song name you'd use.

It's good song, I just wonder if Winter likes it himself anymore having to loop it for 4 hours =)
The reason you hear the beats when trying to sleep is two-fold...
1: Your brain tries to mute repetition and saturation, for sanity and sensory reasons. So you can hear beyond those saturations. Like your inability to smell yourself as strong as others smell you. (Including cologne, B.O., farts, breath...) The self-muting can continue, having reverse effects, as no sensory input is filling the brain and your brain attempts to un-mute the sensory saturation that was once present. (Like sound canceling... if you are trying to remove sound by negative waves, but the sounds you are canceling don't actually exist, it just sounds like it is amplifying the noise that it should be canceling. The negative waves become virtually positive.)
2: Stress... Your are stressed, or "thinking", while hearing that sound. At night, you are TRYING to relax, but you are self-resonating stressed and "thinking", of similar things that you thought about while hearing the beats. Your brain is doing a Pavlov effect. It is associating "thinking", and "stress" with the "beat", and filling-in the blanks, matching the "muted anti-muting" that your brain is attempting to do. (Pavlov... ring a bell and the dog starts to salivate, in anticipation of being fed. After being trained with "beats" on a bell, prior to "thinking", under "stress".)
Put on some low music, so your ears can focus on that, and accelerate the muting process back to normal. Your brain will mute the muting, to focus on the sound and the music should help reduce stress. May be impossible, but make an effort to NOT THINK before bed. You can simply tell yourself, out loud, to give yourself a break and not think. (It's not like the "don't think of elephants", issue... It is a psychological permission to not do something. You literally have to verbally say it, not just think about saying it, or it doesn't work. Then it becomes the elephant that you shouldn't think about, and it will be something you can't stop thinking about. Because you are "thinking" of "not thinking", instead of "hearing" that you have permission to not-think.)
Also, wear headphones, sound canceling ones, while in that room, while testing. Though you will still "feel" the beats, your ears won't be damaged and your brain won't be "saturated", as much. There is no reason that you need to "hear" all that "noise", while testing. You use your eyes to observe anyways, and cameras too. It will give you the chance to think while also increasing your potential observation. Your brain is limited in the number of things it can, effectively, do at once. Though, obviously yours is more effective than many others, at doing multi-tasking... Why purposely limit yourself with undue stress, noise, observation and thinking. Vacations aren't only needed in lump-sums, at the end of months... but during the day too.
P.P.S. Logic and mechanical thinking requires a lot of oxygen. Creativity, opposite of logic and linear thinking, requires oxygen deprivation. In the day, when oxygen is greatest and CO2 is lowest, is best for logical thinking. At night, when CO2 is high as plants switch from creating oxygen to consuming it, and they create tons of CO2, you think more creatively, in a pre-dream state. Try to isolate logical thinking to daytime and creative creations to night time. Besides, creative thinking is less stressful than logical thinking, obviously. Work on making music, instead of trying to design complex logical structures. Paint something, draw doodles, play a game, go out and socialize... Just don't work into the late hours, unless it's "creative work". It will be like trying to drive a car with square wheels, up hill, towing a house, on ice, into the wind, powered off steam. Save the driving for the day-time, when the wind has changed to your back, your tires have been fully inflated back to being round, the crest of the hill has been breached, the ice has melted, there is more oxygen to burn with petrol, and the house is not weighed down by night-time condensation.
very informative and interesting comment.
would you care to point out where i could read some more about how the oxygen concentration in the air affects your creativity and logical reasoning?
i'd like to read more about that. Many thanks.
So, why do farts smell worse in the shower?
You had me until the oxygen levels.
I'm honestly really glad to stumble across your videos. The Marble Machine sounds very good even with the clicks and clanks. Makes it a lot more authentic some how, but that's just me.
With the right microphones and mixing, those noises should not be as apparent.
Hey man, I relax to you everyday! Cool to see you here.
Hey, its my man sensei!
@MinnesotAnon got the whole squad laughing😐
Looks like some of the graphite powder is transferring onto marbles and then to the drum. The marbles will slip on the drum surface and miss the funnel
The fact the fails all came towards the end seems to back this up.
I'm more inclined to believe that it's just trace oxidation residue compounded by the high traffic. If a teeny tiny speck of oxide comes off every tenth marble, just from these drop tests, you have 11000 teeny tiny oxide marks left over on a white surface. Which about checks out. The potential effect of graphite powder is negligible. We're not worrying about plywood sawdust or trace fibers from the felt or residue from loctite. These aren't laboratory conditions, there's gonna be unavoidable trace contamination from every other component of the machine.
Wasn't towards the end though, they were right in the middle.

Fun fact: The song Martin plays throught the whole video is called "Rolling The Boulder" 🎶

On the day of 1 million marbles he should do a live stream the entire time.
totally agree, I'd spend a whole day for that.
Should be great for us, but i he probably won't stay in front of the mmx during the entire test.
Absolutely great idea!
Dude, that would be absolutely epic!! The time could be filled with virtual visits from family, friends, and other musicians from around the world. Would also be a great time with back stories about the build. So many of us would be tuning in throughout the test run stream. And if there were any smart sponsors out there, they would be wise to get all over this event!!! ;-)
@@nako9790 With 38 channels 1.000.000 marbles only comes to around 26.315 pr channel, at the same bpm as this test it should only be a little more than half the time. I think he could do that.

Nah for me it's the "only took me 3 years"
You should use glow in the dark marbles when you tour. Or white marbles and shine a black light on it. This way, the audience will be able to see them and you don’t need moving funnels or kinetic fingers.
teacher: so what talents do you have?
wintergatan: YES
I wonder if the impact of the steel marbles hitting the drum on the same location time after time eventually deforms the drum to where it creates a divot and causes the marbles to bounce erratically . 50,000 impacts in the same location is different from drum sticks which strike random
Drum membranes are elastic so i don’t think it would
It will probably need some maintenance like all mechanical equipment.
Hopefully the drum membrane will last long enough to not be a problem. Looks good so far.
i'm not sure. but to use more of the drum skin it would be nice if it's possible to reposition the drum a bit from time to time. maybe automatic as well? but not much because the sound and the bounce will be different as well. (the bounce might even change after changing the skin or even retuning)
Aspiring engineer here. Someone else please correct me if I'm wrong. As long as the material properties (yield strength, cyclic yield strength, and ultimate tensile strength) of the drum skin don't change over time (change in moisture and temperature can affect those) and assuming that the cyclical load (marble hitting drum + tension at rest) remains relatively constant, then the drum should not deform and will never break. Unfortunately, that is assuming that the force of the marble hitting the drum plus the tension at rest is less than the maximum cyclical load allowed by the material's haigh reduction. I have not done the calculations, but things are built to break, therefore I would guess that eventually the material would succumb to material fatigue. Now, since this is massive amount of hooha to read for many people I will write short definitions for the jargon i wrote, just in case anyone is interested.
yield strength: force required to stretch stuff
cyclic yield strength: important for calculating haigh reduction
ultimate tensile strength: how hard do I have to pull to break something
cyclical load: in this case it is the sum of the tension (pulling) experienced by the drum skin from being stretched over the frame of the drum and the load of the marble hitting the drum
haigh reduction: calculation (graph) how hard can I stretch a thing a theoretically infinite amount of times and not break (or break) it
material fatigue: if you stretch something a certain amount of times, it will eventually break if you do it hard enough. Depending on how hard you stretch it can be between 1 time and never. The fancy word for wear and tear in a lot of ways
@@epicjohnylemon in theory you are right i guess. but in reality anything will give in at some point. drops of water can hollow out a rock even though the material properties of the rock don't change.
i want to take a guess here about those marbles......., those marbles missing the funnel...... have you ever checked their mass? maybe weigh them as i suspect that they might be a tad lighter than the rest "flukes" that may cause them to travel a slightly different trajectory.
Yes
Maybe just make the funnel bigger?

"Satisfying in a way only a spreadsheet can be". You're officially an engineer now, welcome to the club
😂😂😂
Or a CPA.
"There were really two types of players in Eve Online: the spaceship pilots and the spreadsheet pilots. I was more of a spreadsheet pilot myself."
-Scott Manley (paraphrased)
Is it technically marbles if they aren't made of glass? Are they glass? (They look metal in the thumbnail)
@@jaydawg7 yes en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marble_(toy)
Seriously one of the most amazing machines ever made. Imagine if the rotating pin-wheel had electrical or pneumatic solenoids that allowed the pins to move in or out during the course of a song so you weren't stuck with one pre programmed song, literally infinite possibilities! Gah, this this thing is so inspiring!
I really feel sorry for people who haven't noticed the switch to the Wintergatan2 channel :P
Do you know why he opened a second channel without announcing it? Will there be new videos on the main channel? He loses 3/4 on avarage views on his videos by using his 2nd channel..
@@Koernell There were supposed to be only small, unpolished videos there with snippets of daily progress. Unfortunately, Martin being Martin started posting the full-scale videos but on a daily basis. Imho the 2nd channel was not necessary.
Oh!, so that's why I feel him missing :D
I think that Martin should post a sticky video message on this channel to let his followers know of his second channel if he plans to keep that channel open and leave the MMX building vlog there.
Totally needs to be a shirt in the store with "Clean Floor" on it.
"You're not watching me build a machine, you're watching me learn how to build a machine" :D Welcome to engineering! As discouraging as it sometimes feel, I hope you remember that it's how the process works, and is why I enjoy watching projects like this.
Don't get discouraged, every step is progress, even if it involves an angle grinder.
You, sir, are one of the most inspiring people I "know"! Not just with your engineering skills but with your contagious enthusiasm and love for what you're doing. There's just a certain vibe about your videos, impossible to describe with words, but making me smile from the bottom of my soul. I'm proud of being your patron (and little ashamed that my monthly contribution isn't bigger). Thank you for sharing your journey (and your personality) - you always remind me what it's like when someone's found their purpose and it helps me to keep going when I feel like losing mine. Please never stop creating, Martin :)
What he sees playing sheet music: 🎵🎶🎶
What I see: 🙂🙂🙃🙃🙃🙂🙂
The fact that you give your music sheets for free is really amazing. I don't even read sheet music when I am playing but I want to actually buy the hard copy version just because it is really beautiful.
Make the "tour test": disassemble and assemble it, play it 2 hours and repeat this 5 times
No.
@@sonicfon I agree, that isn't enough
@@sonicfon Why not? That's the exact kind of stress it's being designed to endure. Of course, it should probably wait until all the musical design is done in order to not confuse things.
A little to early. But it looks like Martin is on the right track. Step by Step and may we will see a Tour Test ;).
This world, is a ladder
Got to stardom to bottom
If you wanna make it (If you wanna make it) To the top
You got to, take it step by step
Slipping or sliding, take it step by step
No hard riding, take it step by step

8:30 I love that he's so excited about the muting levers, while I was tricked into thinking that functionality existed in 1.0!
21:38 the sound of the MMX produces in here had me goosebumps
I'm in love with this man. I cannot believe he'd just let people download all that music for free. Also the marble machine trials never cease to amaze me
me too
This is getting so close to the real life “animusic” dvd that partially inspired this project!!
Kudos martin!!
bro after binging martin’s videos this morning i was trying to remember the name of the weird animated machine movie i watched in like 6th grade music class, so anyway thanks
@@maggielong7625 glad i could help!!
That was such a cool dvd back in the day lol
One of the most impressive music instrumental projects I've ever seen
Such a true inspiration what's possible out of just a vision
Martin: "Free sheet music and license to use our music"
Me: "You are a true angel! The embodiment of beautiful itself!"
Martin,
one way you could improve the funnels would be to bracket them to the frame at the base of the funnel, instead of relying on the PMMA to support them. that way the funnel as a whole doesn't move during playing, while the spring back can still move. additionally, less than 10 marbles out of 50000 lost to missing the funnel is really good. keep in mind that is a non destructive failure that doesn't directly effect the song. The last two or three tests have had a 0% critical failure rate, meaning nothing was damaged that would prevent you putting a marble or two back in the machine and continuing to play a concert.
Also first time commenting, but i've been watching since the beginning.
Regards
This is a really good idea also I was here from the begging to!!!!
"It's also really satisfying in that special way only a spreadsheet can be"
*MATT PARKER LIKED THIS*
I imagine it's got to feel like what sorcery feels like. Sure it is great the first time, but then it is just a thing you do going about your business.
Yay on the spreadsheet front... As a bit of a spreadsheet nut myself, this is the first time I've seen Martin do something where I've known a better way. To see him level up is very satisfying.
The Parker Square liked this too. Yay for giving things a go!
That sneaky little math man!
I thought of him when Martin said that, after first empathizing thoroughly due to my own love of spreadsheets, of course.
Also, you're amazing, Matt Parker. And, hell, you too @Kant Predict
I somehow alwyas seem to end up watching youtubers that are spreadsheet enthusiasts, first him, then ManyATrueNerd, now Wintergatan
“This plywood model” *puts on table* “ *oh god* “

There is a certain irony that I procrastinate by watching a guy work really hard on something, himself diligently working to avoid procrastination.
Chuck F Hello your not alone -- some tasks take more than research knowledge, the physical preparation can also be time consuming . Even here with Martins amazing progress it started with an IDEA following on with a plan, then putting bits of his IDEA into play-- pardon pun.
I like you & many others find this truly INSPIRATIONAL !! This is an encouragement not to give up!!😉
Sadly, I also fall into that category.
This feels like one of the best episodes in a while. I actually laughed so hard my sides hurt when the CNC went straight for those screws. I loved seeing the engineering put into fixing previous problems and adding the new tracks in. I like the new spreadsheet and in this episode it really feels like the MMX is progressing nicely and has a clear path forward. Then you put in some footage of the early shop and that music box clip to tie it into early episodes. Awesome! This one is super exciting.
I just watched the original marble machine from years ago. It is absolutely insane to see how many changes have been made and how much more advanced the MMX is. Keep up the great work!!!!
Let’s not forget that he has put hours of dedication into this project to get it fully functional. Impresdive
Everyone watching;
"We don't live in a perfect world."
Martin;
"IT WILL BE PERFECT!"
Martin: "I can fix that."
Martin: look at this perfect clean floor !
Y3s
In a perfect world, men like me would not exist, but this is not a perfect world.
yet he is sharring it for free
Martin: “I have an interesting solution for that problem”
Me: one giant mega funnel
Yeah let's make one giant that takes all marbles from all instruments 😂
Me: Super-powerful vacuum pump. Snatch those marbles out of thin air.
Me: tilted floor which redirects the missed marbles back into the machine
Or hire a team of people to pick up the marbles and manually put them back into the machine
Ok but what if....

Yeah, the literal 'Screw Up' xD
🥰Who else can't read sheet music but really wants this book🎼🎶🤪
I can read it, but I can't play it because I don't have a piano.
I can read sheet music
Go get it if you haven't already!
I can read and write sheet music
You should buy the sheet music book and use it as a reason to learn how to read it. The basics of sheet music aren’t that hard to learn, and it’s very worthwhile if you want to play more music.
For those who want timestamps for some synthwave ;)

Шарманка выходит на совершенно новый уровень.👏 крутая работа, и как музыканта, и как конструктора
Super-ultra impressed that he was able to design this machine in the first place. The fact that it can create such a perfect beat and that he can play all the background instruments to accompany it? What is there to say that is beyond Super-Ultra impressed? Whatever it is, it's still not enough to describe the talent this man has!
It is Wednesday my dudes...
Indeed it is my fellow friend!
also, happy new year!
Last Wednesday of the year it is, my dude!

When do we get "clean floor"shirts?
wouldn't that just be a clean shirt?

I just love this guy, he is always happy and loves what he does.
I can't imagine how many hours you've put into making several iterations of the Marble Machine. As a musician and someone fascinated by custom mechanisms, I'mma say this one takes the flame by far!
