Tiny Desk (Home) Concert: Kacy & Clayton and Marlon Williams

- The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
Bob Boilen | March 29, 2021 - Across hemispheres, despite a nearly 8,000-mile separation, the Saskatoon, Canada duo of cousins Kacy & Clayton and New Zealand's Marlon Williams manage to create harmony and intimacy. The Tiny Desk (home) concert, on the surface, is joyful and playful with animated illustrations by Daniel Syrnick. But a careful listen to "Plastic Bouquet," the title track to the 2020 collaboration between Kacy Lee Anderson, Clayton Linthicum, and Marlon Williams, reveals a depth of storytelling more familiar in murder ballads than the trio's upbeat Americana sound.
Kacy sings,
When a small four-door car was severed in two
Three girls were killed by a boy they all knew
Out for a party, they'd never attend
Pockets with money they never would spend
The devastatingly sad tale is met with smiles across hemispheres while an animated teacup pops on screen for Kacy to sip. Clayton's guitar twangs and Marlon's Roy Orbison-like voice conjure a 1950s rock and roll sound that's a surprisingly perfect match for Kacy's serene voice. It's a magic collaboration of the very far north meeting the very deep south. The wizardry of technology reminds me of the wondrous world we often share these days, from a distance.

Marlon is actually perfection. So happy for this release.
Agreed, Heather!👌🎵🎶🎼 Marlon Williams has one of the most uniquely beautiful voices I have discovered in the past 10 years🙌💓- he is the kind of singer that singing acapella -gets the whole audience pin drop quiet and then gives them all the goosebumps and feels! I have only been able to see him in concert twice -but wow- the whole audience was enamored😍🎉☺! So very delighted for this new album🙆!
I miss TiNY Desk in studio but am simultaneously grateful so many artists have been open to singing from their homes for the music lovers of earth.💓
pro trick : watch series at kaldroStream. Me and my gf have been using them for watching lots of of movies during the lockdown.
@Killian Santiago Yup, I've been watching on KaldroStream for months myself :)
This is a fabulous collaboration-I've enjoyed their Plastic Bouquet release many times now. I had the good fortune of seeing Marlon sing and play once upon a time at Mighty Mighty in Wellington. Special!
Kacy what a beautiful voice !!!!
clear as a bell
"Isn't it" is fabulously textured in today and yesterday
All together a really beautiful set
Blessed my morning ears
Thank you 😊
The Arahura was the name of the old ferry that used to Sail the 3 hour journey between Picton and Wellington in NZ. Also the name of a river on the West Coast.

Record after record, their sound beguiles and inspires me. Flowing over me like water, yet with a groove that sends sparks into my soul. Hope to see them in the UK once again. X
NPR Music is one of my favorite channels on UA-cam.
Amen!
I discovered it a week ago... fast becoming my favourite!@! ☺🍻🎶🎶
Thanks for watching!
When will you have Teddy Swims on your station?
@@ZippyLeroux to be my best
Tiny Desk does it again! They are phenomenal 😍
This is what American country music sounded like before commercialization turned it into schmalz. Wonderful as always.
@Jake Boos Yeah, him and his teased hair too.
there canadian.....
@@RobertSlover I actually think that because they (as well as other "Commonwealth" countries like Australia, etc.) are closer to English, Scottish, Welsh, Irish traditions, the music that inspired country music in the US way back when is purer than what we in the US produce today (by and large).
@@postive-vibes fair and solid point. however there are some really good modern musicians out there it does require some digging. if i may id recommend charlie crockett, gillian welch, etc.
They’re Canadian and Marlon Williams is Māori 🎉
OMGosh you guys. This was absolute perfection. What a way to start a dark, wet, cold, rainy NE morning. Just completely shifted my emotions. Can't wait to fall down the rabbit hole discovering your music!! Dang Bob you have the best job ever!!
In that case, Sandra, I'll have to send this link to my friend in Norfolk. I'm guessing it's just as dark, wet, cold, and rainy there as it is where you're at. 😏
so great!!! those voices together!!!!
Such wonderful harmonies! I love these tunes!!! ☮💚🙂🎶
“Can’t be a butcher if you don’t have any meat” 👌🏻
This is sooooo good, I have some many logistical questions about how they were able to play together at the same time on opposite sides of the globe without delay, mostly just HOW?! Love this record.
Ask away, friend. ;)
Magic
These kinds of videos are edited together. They are all synced to a click track, just like recording an album. You can't just sit down and jam over Zoom with your friends.
Two Canadoos and a Kiwi walk into a bar, and country music cries...
Oh-h-h-h! I'm meeting now our Pacific Speciality. What will be following? ...And I see: the Australian Prisoner's grand-grand-grandson walking to bar slowly. And the story is only beginning! May be, with connecting to country music...🎸🎸🎸🤗
This is the kind of group I could get lost in following their entire discography
I wish this was so much longer, it's an absolute Gem.
Marlon has such a singular voice - always excellent solo. What makes him so amazing is how he can sing in collaboration with other artists - Kacy & Clayton, Tami Nielson, Delaney Davidson, etc - and enhances the performance with his harmonies while never demanding the spotlight. His talent is only matched by his humility, and I'm always blown away.
You nailed it. He is such a force, but totally plays a role in this performance that takes a backseat for the good of the song. He is a generational great. We are lucky to have him.
Found Marlon through his first NPR tiny desk concert. Happy to see him back!
Same

if Janis Joplin Jr, Josh Homme Jr, & Christian Bale Jr sat down at a bar... 👌
This should have millions of views! Doesn't come more musical and real.
I could have sworn I've viewed this a million times just by myself
Serenading me to sleep again Marlon. Love your music. I miss my Dad who used to yodel at concerts in Karamea. All my family live for music Helen Diamond Harbour NZ

Beautiful!
Next we want kelly Rowland
I was listening to their album just now when I saw this. I'd say what a coincidence!, but I listen to the album a lot.
Thanks for loving and listening to my music,I really appreciate you for the so much love you've expressed and shown.
Will love to hear from you again💯❤️
Top shelf, right here. 🥰😘
these songs played from home feel even more magical
disappointing this isnt a completely live performance. some audio doesn't line up correctly with the video. i.e. editing fuckery.....if one has the option of a different take the music should be better! they hoped someone wouldn't notice but their are real musicians watching.
@@RobertSlover yes I noticed too, I mean it could be that everyone does it but they aren’t as good at editing video...
2. Hey Robert. These are fully live takes played over live takes. It's as live as can be whilst recording on opposite sides of the world. If anything it's more impressive that they were able to do it this way.
Marlon Williams is a HORI brother that can bust them vocals son....
Chur cousin keep doing you whanau.
How are they playing together with no latency?? Is one of them compensating some how?? Either way, they sound amazing!
I'm assuming it wasn't recorded live...
Live takes over live takes. As live as possible. Super-magic.
@@micaherenberg6525 I thought otherwise because of the words exchanged between the two, but maybe you're right
The conversations happened live via zoom. The only editing was things being muted/unmuted :)
@@micaherenberg6525 OH YOUR the audio person hahaha I thought you were a random internet person. Thanks!!!
Thanks for sharing the Arahura meaning with us.
Marlon Williams is insanely talented.🕺
Beautiful!
Made my night,this.
Love me some Marlon.
(And company.)
Beautiful. ❤
I can't stop watching the earring.
How many frogs did bob have to come across before he found this jam.
Nothing related to their beautiful music and voices, but long live the single earring 😉. I would love to attend to a double concert of them really, like everyone playing their stuff and playing some songs together. Love all of them and funny enough knew them separately before this collaboration. When the album came out I was like wow ! The three of them together- fantastic! I listen to that album quite a lot.
You have instrument. Me no. Have only my grind pass poetry.
Love Marlons voice he has some serious talent from what I can see on you tube..has he sung with John Grant yet?
Just discovered these three. Awesome. Hope to catch a concert sometime in Washington DC. :)
So amazing, the voices are beautiful, Marlon you never fail with your amazing talent :-)
💚💚💚 Congratulations from Ukraine!
Here !
Unbelievable!
Marvelous, delightful, inspiring
Wow. Just WOW. Thank you all!
Kacy’s voice is lovely and wavy, somewhere in the ballpark of Sandy Denny from Fairport Convention
🖤🖤🖤
What sort of rag time rolly polly music is this. Folk it properly with a triangle, wash board, harmonica? brightest sun, bell of cow 🐄🐮 and smell of kale 🥬 ! I reckon fog horn leg horn says you have.
Bob's boilin' blurb's brilliant!
please bring RUFUS DU SOL into tiny desk, would be awesome.
Aotearoa represent!
Hey NPR, y’all should try and get Eddie Vedder to do a tiny desk. Guy has the voice of god himself lol
Un tiny concert de Choquibtown please.
Nice
Love. Reminds me of Patsy Cline or Dean Martin/Ricky Nelson.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Such a beautiful melody on that first tune
Marlon looks like a 40yo Charlie Puth
This is amazing 😻
👏
Get JOJO❤
"now we are cooking with gas" @ 15:41
"You can't be a butcher without any meat"@ 11:08
Awesome!
Love this ❤️❤️❤️
Hey love you
The guitar is amazing
When are the regular tiny desk concerts coming back?
Love the music. But, are you guys trying to do shtick?
bring d'angelo! now!
I dont even know where to ask if i REALLY want someone to play on tinydesk - but Boy Pablo would be awesome in my opinion!
In the meantime, ill keep binge"hearing" tinydesk while i write my assignments!
Great set, harmonies, tunes. Thanks for this performance. Reminds me of some early Paula Frazer and Tarnation.
Ka pai ❤️
Tiny Desk could use a concert by Megan Nash, another great Saskatchewan singer.
Wish i could give this 100 👍
🥰🥰🥰👍👍
Aaah, te Arahura. Just drove past that river today so had to listen to the song ♡
Her accent is epic!
😱😱😱
Sighhhhhhhhh...
You are an inspiration to emerging artists Marlon
😎
