- Here are the five primary reasons that I changed my mind and decided NOT to go to medical school and go to Nurse Practitioner school instead. Med school is a huge commitment, and one that is a great choice for many, but it is also has immense impacts on your life not only as a med student, but as a resident and future attending as well. After completing requirements for my premed advising I shadowed a medical resident, which lead me to switch my career to nursing, which ultimately lead to my career as a family nurse practitioner. If you are a considering medical school or going the nurse practitioner student route, my hope is this video will give you clarity on your choice

Nurses and doctors are so abused by both the hospital and patients. Nobody cares. Doctors have the highest suicide rate of almost any profession. They sacrifice their 20s, most of their youth actually, and they go severely into debt, they are sleep deprived, go through really hard courses and training, and at the end of the day are still treated like crap by everyone including their employers. It's definitely not worth it and that's so sad to say. Because a lot of people are attracted to becoming nurses and doctors because they naturally have caring personalities that want to help people and it's so sad that that gets abused and taking advantage of and trampled all over.
Preach girl! I agree with you 100% on so much! I am finishing up my DNP in Nurse Anesthesia and I LOVE the care team model! We are a team and my goal is to be a key team member NOT the team leader. I have been a critical care nurse for 15 years and nursing is hands down the BEST career option for me. I am smart enough to be a physician and I CHOSE to be a nurse, do not get it twisted! Because of this choice I was able to travel to all 7 continents before I was 30, have ZERO student loans (even in anesthesia school), and get pregnant and start a family at a younger age. There are so many benefits to choosing nursing and the risk/benefit analysis all pointed to nursing.

Good for you on your accomplishments. How do you know you are smart enough to become a physician if you have not gone through the medical program along with everything else that comes with it?
Problem is (congrats btw that’s awesome!), hierarchies are necessary. At some point, there will be a more knowledgeable person, who makes MOST of the decisions in hard moments. Not all educations are equal, and there will always be someone more educated and trained, whom you will rely upon in difficult moments.

Ugh it really bugs how little respect and regard we have for each other in healthcare. I’m sorry there are people trying to make you feel like less for choosing your path and trying to help people help themselves.
I am an MD and can confirm that a lot of medical education is pretty toxic, fosters competitiveness unnecessarily, and causes a lot of trauma. It is an ableist field that favors those with greater privilege. I mostly don’t regret my path but I do see it doing damage, we have a long way to go before we are doing ourselves and our patients Justice. And looking down our noses at other professionals we work with is not cool and it makes me sad. I love and respect the NPs, PAs and nurses I work with.

First off, you shouldn't have to explain yourself to anyone, and I'm sorry the internet trolls were behaving badly towards you! That said, I became a nurse frankly because my marriage was ending and I needed a better income to support myself and my kids. No "Healthcare Hero" here, I just needed to pay the bills. Thankfully I've enjoyed all things medical since I was young, reading my mom's nursing magazines (Nursing '76: Burnout, and starting IVs in the Pediatric Patient Population), and I genuinely enjoy patient care. My niece is a path resident, and while pathology is her thing, she's exhausted working 80 hours/wk and making only $15/hr. It's hard to become a doctor. We each chose our paths and support each other. Thanks for your message and for all you do!
I think more of us need to talk about how nursing is a stable job that you can do just for the fact that its a stable job. Right there with you with disliking the healthcare hero thing. Manipulation at its finenest right there. Good luck to your niece!

I'm a med student. I think you're absolutely right that people need to make the choice that works best for them. I love the investigative side of medicine, and I think I'll probably go IM/crit care. I'm here because I can't imagine doing anything else. I think if I could I probably would, because as a non-traditional student it has been a long road with an incredible amount of stress. I'm glad you found a path that worked best for you, and I'm glad that I am where I am.

@@mariammahmoud5465 I was not a nurse. I have classmates who were. I got a bachelor's in a non-science field, took my premed courses after graduation and then got a master's in a semi-related but not hard science field.

This was the video I was praying to God for. Thank you so much! I was so conflicted because I fighting between the pristige of being a doctor and neonatal nurse practitioner. Honestly this is me! I got an undergrad in bio and fully intended on going to med school but I don’t want to. It’s too long. I wanted to spend time with my daughter. I wanted a life. Med school is like 10 years of nursing school. & the debt! Omg. No no no 😭 Even an internist I shadowed told me to just go be a PA or an NP. I feel you on the lazy part too 😅 also yes adhd is real lol and I just can’t.
I totally agree with you. The $$ and time commitment for medical school is not worth it, especially if you plan on taking time off to raise your kids or work part-time.
For sure. Definitely could be very worth it if you want your life to be your work, but if you dont it can be too much
100% agreed. When you're already married and possibly with kids, and established in a home and location you're attached to and don't want to move or be separated from your spouse and family, it becomes an incredibly impractical if not impossible idea. This is the ultimate reason I ruled out both becoming a doctor or a PA, because of the high likelihood of needing to move. That was a deal breaker for us, so I went for nursing instead with no regrets at all. I might even possibly take the APRN pathway in the future after I've been practicing as a nurse for long enough.

I am entering the final semester in my NP program so obviously already decided on which path to take, but you really captured some of my feelings and concerns regarding this path, and it just makes me feel more confident in this decision. Heading back to NP school after 15 years of being of being an RN. I don't regret any life choice. I always wanted to be a psych NP but never felt ready until now. I want to be a psych NP to do med management and therapy

People keep forgetting that nurses and Doctors are 2 separate career paths, they are not extentions of one another. They work close together but they are completely different. Some people want to become Drs and some want to becomes nurses. Thats that.

My daughter was accepted into a biological sciences program after high school. At the last minute, she switched into the school of biomedical engineering. Best decision EVER! After graduation she got a great job (after 4 years of school) and it's actually fun!!! If she tires of her job, she could get into business, purchasing, project management, etc. Oh yeah... her company paid for her master's degree.
I'm in RN school , hoping I pass before I even think about np school, my desired specialty is neurosurgical nurse practioner! I just passed the first semester, praying to the most high I get through the second semester
But I absolutely agree that MD school is alot of money & a big commitment, I too have ADHD & I'm scared it will interfere in regular nursing school, I will never take that big of a risk. LMAO
Please consider a few years in practice. You will feel so much more prepared to practice as an NP when you have practice foundation. Best wishes. Remember self-care and boundaries.

Video is great but thought I'd clarify that residents typically defer their loans and don't begin paying them off until after residency.
I'm loving your channel! I'm changing my career from lab to nursing and I have been contemplating to become nurse practictioner too! And I feel being a doctor is not worth it, financially get in so much debt and no social life. Just because a doctor is a doctor, doesn't mean they are really enjoying life with the money they make.

I’ve been seeing a lot of NP hate (as per usual haha) and it makes me annoyed & frustrated & I appreciate videos like yours.
NPs have a more limited scope than physicians but can do a fine job diagnosing & treating within their scope, and identifying and passing on cases outside of their scope. Just like MD/DOs should pass on cases outside of their scope of practice.

Your reasons are very valid. No one should state not even as an opinion the life path we as a person should choose... PLEASE! now saying this, I also want to say that a lot of undergrad doctors go to Mexico, to Guadalajara to be specific, ( well the ones who speak Spanish) Sorry. They get their doctorate degree there (cheap. AND SOME universities are FREE (UNAM) then come back here and pass all the boards they need. Is a short cut but has again HAS WORK for many physicians! I know personally a few!
There are definitely people who go the international med school route! Can be a problem when it comes to residency if they don't get a spot, but its definitely an option! Thanks for bringing it up !

Truth truth truth!! THANK you!! For saying something I feel like I scream from the top of my lungs…. And get told I am naive and ignorant. I would have loved to become a physician but, in my opinion, for a career that focuses on learning the human body and caring for those that are unable to and need us, this is a torturous, unnecessarily cruel path. No thank you. I will focus on my mental health.
Honestly, all your reasons for becoming an NP instead of MD are about you: "part time, not being bound to overwhelming debt... wanted to be home and not working 80+ hour weeks... I could change my mind, I could work 1-2 days per week." As a patient, this video scares me from trusting an NP's knowledge.

totally depends on the hospital system! There are some unionized hospitals and those are MUCH better to work at. I would stay away from a lot of the private ones, those can be a bit of a hot mess. I'd avoid detroit. I worked with alot of nurses that came from detroit hospitals and they left because the ratios were awful. But overall from what i've heard, anything will be an improvement from florida!

In regards of all the pros and cons of choosing a physician career, it seems to be accurate.
My daughter was in pre med school getting ready to apply to Medical school.
Then, after digging into what was like to take this journey, she found out exactly the same reasons you described.
After a careful analysis, she chose to be a clinical pharmacist. Short after she got married, and her profession allows her to enjoy time with her husband, son, family, friends, and also to practice martial artes, which she loves. She is very happy with her choice as she lives a well balanced life.
I'm so glad she found a route that works better for her!!

My mom was a nurse too and she always complained about work so I never considered anything in medical field until I just decided that maybe I want to use my MSW to be a medical social worker.

My problem with nurse practitioners is that many are not intellectually curious and weren’t even cut out to be RN’s but paid for an online degree mill to get a graduate degree. I have horror stories of NP’s that make really dumb statements and medical decisions. There are dump people in every profession but they aren’t putting people’s lives on the line.
I am with you on the degree mill front, but man oh man, what a terrible, TERRIBLE take. Have you met every single nurse practitioner within the United States and or beyond? For you to call out NPs for making "dumb statements and "medical decisions" is quite ironic as it seems that you are the one who is making quite a 'dumb' assumption. There are also many doctors who have made decisions that have destroyed patient's lives as well.
And how do you define one's intellectual curiosity? Again, are you a researcher of some sort who has visited dozens upon dozens of medical institutions and interacted with NPS/PAs across various disciplines? Terrible, misguided take.
MY PROBLEM...is being forced to see an NP rather than a Dr...
If someone wants to become an NP, then its their personal decision..but as a patient, I shouldnt be given only the option of seeing an NP!
This happened to me at my kid's pediatrician appt which turned out is an NP and at an urgent care clinic..
Not THAR you're forced, it's more because you can't afford to see an MD.MDs are stepping out of clinic to leadership positions. To coordinate care.

Anybody that puts down an N.P. Is totally ignoring what they have to go through. Not everyone WANTS to be a doctor. Many reasons including debt.

Worked with a pediatrician that LOVED her job. She worked 12 hours a week, either 5 or 6 days a week. I’m still considering medical school, but I don’t think many people that begin medical school know what the day to day of being a doctor is like.
Heaven help all of us. I was open minded, I saw the nurse practitioner, 4 months post surgery. She was a female chauvinist. And she completely Foxed up my recovery.
I enjoyed hearing your reasoning for making your career decision. You seem to have a realistic and balanced view. I don't hear a pretentious attitude in your videos. I do have a concern about nurses' lacking an understanding of the difference between medicine and nursing. It is bad enough that medicine doesn't know the difference between the two professions but when nurses don't know it undermines the nursing profession. Who is left to support professional nursing if nurses don't know who they are? The two professions have two separate covenants of practice.
There is definitely more and more overlap between the two and I think both need to really re-evaluate how they define themselves honestly. Medicine is becoming more and more holistic in many places and nursing is incredibly medicalized. but the curriculum and "theory" behind them are not keeping up with the times. making it super confusing not only for the people working in the professions but for patients as well
What NP school did you go to? I'm having a hard time finding a brick and mortar MSN program.
I went to Michigan State.
I sometimes wonder if I would have enjoyed becoming a Physical Therapist if I had been more aware of the field when I was in high school. There is a great degree of more independent practice in a more defined knowledge area. I have done a lot of med surge, rehab and then agency nursing as well as high quad homecare, especially when I was an LPN supporting husband in grad school and preparing to return to school for my RN.
But the math in Kinesiology may have been too much for me.I had friends in a program in college.

Only issue with physical therapy is the debt to income ratio. At least six figures of student loan debt to make 60-70k a year starting out and the ceiling is pretty low.
The cost isn't a big deal if you go to a medical school cost, and repay.. you can pay it off in 3 years

The nurse Practitioner (NP) program was created in this nation in 1965 due to increased demand for healthcare among underserved populations. So whoever is ranting about NPs needs to get a grip. Glad you made the best choice for you. Made mine, an NP currently employed at one of the virtual urgent cares - the best choice I ever made, thanks to telemedicine. I was talking about Evusheld, a preexposure prophylaxis for Covid and one of my MD anesthetist friends asked what that was, yup! No one regardless of specialty is going to know everything. Did going to med school cross my mind? Yup! A zillion times but I was way older and had been an RN for 20 years. I could pretty much manage an entire hospital by then, ha! ha! Don't get me wrong, the CEO of our health system is a Ph.D., RN, the best in the nation. So, "you do you" as they say. There are medical school programs that do not require tuition for the research geeks out there...and it's called MD-PhD. Many of these programs are free!! Additionally, the students receive a stipend of >30K a year. So anyone thinking of going to med school and loves research, there you go - debt free.
I appreciate your acknowledgement of Physician expertise and training. But let me lay some facts here. MDs are literally smarter, the objective data shows that MD avg IQ is 130. While avg nurse IQ ranges between 100-110. Did you take the MCAT? What makes you think you could even get into medical school. MD school acceptance rates range from 0.01-5% while acceptance rates for NP schools range between 30-100%.
You can’t just say “this is why I didn’t do medical school”. Most students who want to become doctors never even make it to the application process because it is such a rigorous path. The MCAT weeds out a lot of people not to mention the difficult undergraduate degrees that are very science heavy. Very few people can honestly say that they “chose” not to go to MD school. Very few people have the capability to actually pursue medical school.
To get into MD school you have to be the top of the top not to mention to get into the specialty you want you have to compete with all of those students. You literally have to be top of the top of the top to get into the competitive specialties like surgery.
The medical education NPs get is approximately tantamount to 1/2 a semester of MD school, maybe
100%, we need more Doc in the future. It's hard to get into it..
@@emuye-shinbira8268 exactly. Doctors are irreplaceable. Unfortunately a large proportion of funding is going to educating NPs instead of expanding medical schools and residency programs.
In my experience the NP’s have FAR BETTER bedside manner than a doctor who is only in the room for all of 2 seconds!

This sounds a lot like the LPN-RN debate!
People need to understand there are different levels of care in medicine and they all have an important role in the medical field.
That debate will soon be put to rest as most hospitals (especially magnet certified institutions) are no longer hiring LPNS.

Wat I have discovered about medicine is that most of the work is about "Memorizing" stuff,they have to memorise every muscle in the body and all that.and wats so special about that? Who can't do that?....who wants to spend seven years on one thing???
Not you. But a lot of people are trying to get in in to it with a higher end competition..
Net 1400/m left for rent/food/insurance/bills. And you are working 80hrs/week. If you are a parent, forget about child care unless you have the luxury of a family member to watch them and basically raise them.
I'm currently in an MSN-FNP student. I have wanted to be a NP and open my own clinic since I was little. I didn't want to be a doctor, not bc I can't do it. I just don't want to 😂

The only thing I want to correct is when you were talking about resident salary and income. Yes the average income is around 58,000, but our loan payback is adjusted based on income i.e "income based repayment". So while you are a resident making 58,000 you will not be paying the 2,300 a month you mentioned. It will likely be a few hundred a month.
Great and timely vid. Forwarding to my grandson that is on the fence about med school, and no way could he afford this or spend so much time and life in this, especially when we see what evil things healthcare has done having to do with C-19. Also I summarized Affordable Care Act, which is horrific and eventually single payer socialized system that WHO is taking over on a global level. Thank you!

I prefer NPs or PAs. They have way better listening skills and are more willing usually to listen to my own research. Ive solved many of my own health issues by telling medical staff what labs or duplex u/s needed to be done. I spend all my free time studying my own health and my loved ones.
I would buy all of this "why I didn't go to med school" if you had actually been accepted then turned down your acceptance. You can't really say 'what if' when you never came close to actually doing it.
But why would I bother paying to apply when I knew it wasn't what I wanted? I assume that you've applied and been accepted to every single job you've ever thought of and turned them down when you knew what you wanted to do.
@@NurseLiz I think we are stuck on semantics, at the end of the day, you can't say you chose not to go to med school, that implies that if you had tried you would have been accepted or graduated med school; unfortunately, that's not the case for the majority of people. It would be more believable that you went to another career outside of healthcare or had been accepted and turned it down. People love to say that they "did not choose medical school" but that's like a triple-A or Sunday league baseball player saying that he did not choose to go the MLB, at least that's how I see it. It is hard to come to terms with the fact that you took an easier path to do a half-ass job, no shame in that, the problem is that NP and PA try to say their knowledge and expertise rivals that of a physician when especially for NP that could not be further from the truth.
@@MrPipin22 what do you mean "believable"? She is telling you why she made a decision about taking a path in her life. What is there not to believe? I guess you're implying that the true reason she didn't go to med school is because she couldn't handle it, as if that's the only plausible reason that not everyone in the world is a doctor. You sound like those basic ass people who only value money and prestige for its own sake. NPs and PAs have important roles in a fucked up healthcare system, and I would argue are fundamentally different jobs than being a doc. No one says anything about their knowledge being comparable. There's no need to put other people down because you have some inferiority complex that you can't seem to shake no matter how hard you try to be an alpha bro
@@MrPipin22 Did you listen to the video? I never claimed to have the same expertise as a physician. That's what I love about being an NP! Our scopes of practice are very different. And I think your knowledge of semantics is limited. Let's look at an example: I'm considering my options for a vacation: Florida or a week at the shore. I look into all the financial information, activities, what have you and choose to go to the shore. By default, I also CHOSE not to go to Florida. Your argument only works if I never even considered med school in the first place, but I did consider it, for a long time actually.
In no way is any healthcare job "half-assed", as you say. We deal with people's LIVES and we all have different expertise. A radiologist has different expertise from a surgeon, but both are necessary to provide care. A nurse/NP has different expertise and scope of practice than a physician, but all have their role to play and place in providing care.
@@NurseLiz We will never agree because the reality is that NPs are not well-equipped to practice medicine. I watch your content, you always talk about how you went for the "easy" option to become an NP, patient's do not deserve a "provider" that went for the easy route, like you said these are people's lives. I am a nurse, our education is very deficient, no amount of bedside experience or years in NP school can replace the knowledge that comes from med school and residency. That's without even mentioning pre-med which is probably 35-40x harder than any nursing graduate program.
