I've been there 5 times back in the early 2000's, we had a couple of guides and man these guys were strictly badass if they didn't know it you didn't need to know it! I caught 5 fish that day, one salmon was 26 pounds, my arm is still sore lol. What a beautiful serene place, even when there are a lot fishing.
Good times on the river. I absolutely love it! I only made it North 3 times last fall because my truck took a crap on me. But soon enough I'll be on the boat drifting the big Man.
Speaking of the "Big Man". Curious about your experience??? I been fishing it for the last 15 years. Up to about 10 years ago, fishing was pretty good. Limiting out wasn't all that hard to do. We'd throw Thundersticks and/or just have a flatfish behind the boat(letting the current make it work). Both methods were equally productive. Since then, it seems to be worse every year. The last 2 years...not even a single hit (for me). Last one I caught was 4 years ago. As far as the fishing goes...the 3.5hr drive is not worth it. The prize is getting to spend time fishing with my dad, before I can't.
@@fermiticus4034 I'd have to say that it depends on where you fish at? Two years ago I was out on the below Highbridge and was awestruck at how many fish we're just milling around? Nothing holding. Just pods of 20 to 30 fish swimming up and down river, there had to be thousands! I fish with flies generally but I have ran plugs with success for steelhead. I'm pretty new to the boat game just yet. And I haven't heard of any real drop off of the numbers in the fall?
Appreciate your reply! I like to think it's just a timing issue...."Ah, ya shoulda been here yesterday!" sort of thing. My 1st trip up there, saw very little fish the first few days. Then BAM...schools of hundreds at a time passing through, about every 20-30 minutes, with groups of 1-20/30 in between. It was an amazing sight to see. Saw a lot of chasers, but no takers. Hooked up on a few...couldn't get the line through the water without bumpin a few...usually in the back. Never did get any of those in. That lasted a very frustrating day and a half. We started catchin fish after the schools had passed on through. Haven't seen anything close to that since. We have a site at Coho Bend. For the most part, we go up, just past Jenkins Bayou and slow drift (drag anchor) down to Anderson Bayou, throwing thunders. It's a good 2.5-3hr drift. After that, we'll anchor above a hole, drop a flatfish in it and just enjoy the time out there. Every trip up there, I stop at Highbridge on the way in and out...just to look. Neat place!
@@fermiticus4034 you're welcome for the reply, I love to discuss fishing! Out of curiosity. what type of rod and reel are you using? Thinking about getting a fly rod and reel, never had one, and dont know the more reliable brands for those.
Didn't look like a euro nymph setup. Didn't see an indicator. Looked like a barrel swivel with a good amount of weight attached to three feet of tippet and an egg fly, right? A chuck n duck rig, right? Cause that's what the hook set and set up looked like. I know salmon can strike out of aggression/territory/etc. Jus sayin dude. I know that stretch of the PM quite well and 9/10 fishermen over there are chuck n duckin.
Egg, streamer, stone flies they eat a wide variety of flies. I've caught them with euro setup and indicator works fine too. I had more on a streamer that day than anything else and of course chuck and duck.. but you can do chuck n duck for steelhead and even trout. No barrel swivel and not very much weight at all and actually not tippet either.. I understand if that's your opinion that they don't eat.. but they hit just as good as a steelhead on the right day and I fish them almost exactly the same. From my experience I can say that they do indeed eat up too a certain point. When they are half dead.. then ya they are done eating and they are no fun too fish anymore
Ah, fishermen...once an easygoing lot. Really dont want to eat those fish after they have been in the river more than a few days, they dont really feed once they hit the river so they get really gross, plus these are spawning fish and we all would really appreciate them being released and allowed to spawn.
