I've been on a CD binge since the late '80s. Collecting never ends. Hmmm... that made sense to me when I wrote it! Truth is, I had to offload hundreds of CDs a year or so ago when I moved. I'm regretting it to this day even though I've still got thousands left!
i'm same way. I would bring my discman over to half priced books and spend the entire day listening to stacks of strange new music hoping to discover some new eclectic diamond in the rough. it was such a fun way to spend the day. I've been collecting CDs since the late 1980s so I didn't need any advice, but your video was very good! I was especially intrigued by the suggestion to avoid remasters. Counter-intuitive but true. Also, the suggestion to avoid loading up on music you don't know is excellent. Music requires time, and we only have so much of it, and we can only "absorb" music at a certain rate. One thing I wish you'd mentioned, and I think this is VERY important, is to check the playing surface of the CD. I've acquired used CDs that were flawed because the reflective playing surface had developed small pinholes (sometimes they're not so small). I'd recommend holding the CD up to whatever bright light is available in the shop, "blank" (unprinted) side of the disc facing you, and look for pinholes of light shining through. The CD should be rejected if it has even one pinhole because it will not play properly.

I wonder why analogue fans are so against compression as it was invented to put music onto vinyl. CD's do not need compression as a medium but unfortunately get it. The dynamic range available on a cd compared to vinyl is huge.
True, True and True but its the level of compression on newer pop/rock CD´s compared to new vinyl that makes the latter often sound better today. CD is a technically superior medium but its potential in pop/rock has been wasted by poor mastering. New classical CDs today sound consistently excellent and remastered classical ones too, because dynamic range is highly important in this genre.

Case in point: The original CD of Eric Clapton's comp "Time Pieces" is hands down his best sounding comp CD vs "Cream of" vs "Life in 12 Bars" (worst!).

It's hard to make a blanket statement about CD mastering or remastering. Some of the early CD releases were not good, so the remastered versions were a big improvement. Of course many remastered versions do have the dynamic range problem. Many titles have been remastered several times, with one specific remastered version being much better than any other version of the title.

The only thing I hate about CD's are jewel cases. They look generic, get ugly over time and are way too thick. They may protect the disc pretty well but I haven't liked them from the start (I'm old). I even dislike the sound they're making when browsing through them in a store 😂
I've transfered all my discs to wallets and they take up much less space now. I do keep the special cases though (colored or anything else that makes it special).
Digipaks are even worse Jewel cases are better they protect the cds 💿 better and u can replace them easily y 😅
Or u can buy the skinnier color cd cases that come in different colors there skinner though
Hallo Matt, super video. Maybe you dont listen to classical but I have found they dont suffer from loudness wars issues are they are consistently more carefully remastered. Jazz is very varied I have found and I stick with the major labels.
I still buy lots of cds especially since I get them cheap ...i also look for the first produced ones AAD,i think they sound better .Good job on your site.
Thank you! Yes it's a great time to buy them. Even the early AAD ones don't go for much on the whole.
It's the AAD not the ADD that I personally prefer (for the most part). @@apollomemories7399
@@apollomemories7399 I get the impression from the various comments you've made that you have very strong opinions and that's ok. I didn't start this channel to force people to my way of thinking, I just wanted a place to share my love of music regardless of whether or not you like what I like or not, or whether you prefer a particular format, pressing, mastering or whatever.
You've been very rude about some of the music I like and been a bit condescending at times too. I don't really know why but in any case please continue to enjoy what you enjoy and if you disagree with others do so with kindness and respect for the joy that our music brings us. Cheers.
I want to cultivate a community of music lovers here and I welcome your opinions. I just don't want them packaged up with the attitude, that's all. If you think you can help educate me and other music fans with what you know then great. Just please, stop being so combative in the future. My channel is still small enough that I can weed out people who want to start fights in here, and I will!
