Thanks for the video. I just started shopping around for surplus steel beam and I was thinking to just weld it all together. Pretty much like you did here. Well, I might do column base plates - not sure. Anyway, thanks again for showing your build. I will probably go the W12 beam route too unless I find a good deal on plate. May be tempting to build my own beams as I can copy a 40x40 building I alreeady have.

Are there pad footings under the columns or at least a continuous footing around the slab? I would hope your not anchoring those wide flanges to only the slab.

I do pre-eng steel in canada. We dont do any welding! How do your columns affix to the grade beam? Is it welded on? If so, how is the steel plate affixed to the grade beam? We have our concrete guys install the threaded posts in the grade beam, to which we plumb and set down with nuts.

I’m about to build a 30 x 40 shop myself. I love the video because of all the good information and the positivity you have while on the job site. I do have a question you might be able to give recommendations for. I am doing a 4” slab but want to do a 6” section under a vehicle lift I’m going to install. Does this sound like a reasonable plan or should I do something a little different? Thanks in advance!

I realize that once the steel is welded it's too big to travel, and so that's why you weld on site. But the thought of not doing anything further to protect the steel (like painting it) doesn't sit well with me. I'd much rather have a pre-fabbed system that bolts together.

Clearly there appears to be a case of neighbor "shop envy" going on here. LOL! 😁 Was there a reason that you did not "ramp" the concrete slab where the garage door opening will be so water will run away from the garage door and make it easier to get in? At least it didn't appear to be from the video. Did the customer request reinforced support piers for the 2 post lift? 😉 Gotta have a 2 post lift for the shop. Now add material and labor costs for concrete pad and erection of building. Add lighting, wiring, power panel and electrician and helper. Add any permit and inspection fees. Prices for these vary by location. I figure just under $30,000 all in. I am not familiar with TX such as permitting, demand and price for labor. The fluctuating cost of steel can be a sizable factor in the final price.
