  • This 'Throwback Thursday' takes us back 10 years to 2011. Don Freschi and Brian Chan fly fishing for big Bows on Dragon Lake near Quesnel, BC. The weather isn't the best but the guys persevere to land a few nice fish. Don ties Tawny's Boatman Pattern on the bench.

    How do you fish the boatman, strip it, indicator?

      Two main lines/techniques we use successfully when the fish are taking Boatman;
      1) Use a Clear Intermediate sink line with 12ft leaders and ‘plop’ the fly aggressively during the cast to get the fishes attention. Then quick, short strips, so the fly starts moving downward into the water.
      2) Use a Type 3 full sink line with the same cast and strip as #1 above. This gets the fly down quicker from the surface.
      The fish want to fly moving, since Boatman move quickly to the bottom to get to safety, so hanging the fly isn’t very effective.
