Me watching this from start to finish with no children or any need for a nanny in my kasmall studio apartment. I must say this video is really good and insightful more so for those of us who aren't there yet but don't want to be shocked when we are hit by the curve balls when that time comes. Shukran Kitt.
Hi Kitt, great content there, thank you for this. I think in most cases we just hire nannies in a hurry. Sometimes desperation makes us overlook so many things. But this content is an eye opener. I have had one nanny for almost 6 years and she has been great with her work and I also give her her space. She is a live in nanny and she organizes her work, we have dinner and 7 pm, she cleans the kitchen and in most cases, she is in bed by 8.30pm. As soon as she is done with her work, we pray and off she goes. Weekends I do the cooking unless I travel and that is also the time I go through my kitchen provisions. She is poor with letting me know what is running low and I have learnt to live with her that way since she is good at other things. I am contemplating not hiring a nanny again if she goes. I hope I will be able to cope. My son is now 10 and half and we can manage. Trouble is I work from 8 am to sometimes 7 pm and I live far, getting home late depending on the traffic hence not sure if my son can stay that long alone from school. However, if I hire again, I will surely do it the right way, your way. Thank you
I am a self appointed househelp advocate. I hate how they r paid and treated. I hope we can continue to improve on our attitude towards a very essential service provider.
wow, wow! This is great. I have never had it this way. Thanks! Does education level matter, only someone that has gone to school may understand this level of professionalism. Am a young busy doctor struggling with nannies, stumbling on this video is a great deal.
The pay for nannies is sad in this country. I have a part-time helper. She comes 4 times a week to do the dishes and clean the house and I pay her ksh300 per day worked. It feels fair to me. Because she comes in at 7:30 by 9:30 she's done and can move on to other hustles. There's a machine for my laundry and she's not required to fold my clothes but out of kindness sometimes I wake up and find she either took them out of the machine or folded them. BUT... I feel like I am forced to get someone else. The quality of her work has significantly reduced and I don't like micro-management or telling people what to do and when. Like kitt, I am busy doing other things, manage your side and I manage the side. The kids are now complaining about the quality of her work nowadays, so I feel like I have no choice. I am not a confrontational person. I only have 1 full-time kid at home and she's 14, and I have a dog.
Very insightful content. My honest opinion is that what you chose to do you should do it with all your heart and give it your best shot. Make it your profession at that given time and the commitment, professionalism and hardwork eventually pay.
Kitt can you officially be my friend 🙈? I just love you . Your content shows the kind of person you are, so smart, intelligent and well brought up. Great content as always ❤
Very good content! The nanny is there to provide a needed service and you as the employer must cover your side: pay on time and an adequate salary. If you pay 6k to a monther with 3 kids in school don’t be surprised when she leaves you without notice for a better employer.
Wow this video is educative being a first time mom and having my 1st Househelp is really stressing And lately they are asking for fare to report to work
I love tht in Kenya domestic work is becoming more formal form of employment, u have minimum wage. Here in Uganda we dnt have minimum wage, everyone is paid as the employer desires 😭😭 Some housekeepers r still Earning from as low as an equivalent of 1200ksh!! And overworked too. Bkoz their employers r also underpaid and overworked too. They r hired and fired anyhow, no leave days. I could go on and on Ts absurd Ts absurd
I miss my former nanny. If I could I would have retained her, too bad she had to go to Saudi. She was self moved. Unfortunately her family needed someone to fend for them financially so she to go for a bigger pay.
Question: How do you empower your nanny? You see at a formal workplace, your boss can choose to send you to a certain training to get a promotion. Besides promotion, like you mentioned it isn't a prestigious job to become a housekeeper. How can we as their employers broaden their professional capacity so that they don't live their whole lives being nannies/housekeepers?
I understand your question and it's motivation. Before I say how I empower the people who work for me, let me just say this, being a nanny/ housekeeper your whole life is not a bad thing. Your work environment and employer are the ones who could be bad. But there are some very prestigious nannies out here.... I empower the people who work for me by: 1. Taking them to first aid training 2. Encouraging them to read my books 3. Educating them (speaking to them) on how to 'level up' their interactions- integrity, punctuality, taking responsibility 4. I allow and trust them to manage and make decisions, without micro managing This isn't a comprehensive list and there's room to add
My mother used to take all house girls who stayed over 2years with us to a tailoring course and she told them that was the last house they would be house girls. She always realised the girls after 4years so that they go and start their families. She said she never wanted to keep them longer for several reasons: i) Its nobody's dream job ii) She wants to see them grow beyond being househelps iii) Children and family dynamics change and the relationship with nannies and househelp changes too and she loves them to leave when the relationship is still at its best. We have had good relationships with around 3 of our former househelps and nannys and as grown ups we have visited some of them and seen what a good life they have and they always tell us how our mother empowered them and helped them get to the next level/stage of their lives.
Hello Kitt just seen this vide today, what of a househelp who sells herself well, you interview her and she passes well, but a month into the job she becomes something else or even in the case of those nannies that last a week, how many contracts can you sign or notices can you give? assuming she sues you? and in the event you have to release her before her notice ends do you pay her for that month??
Hi Kitt, this was very insightful. Thank you. I was wondering if you have any advice for people who have leave-in nannies and house keepers. How would one manage the monthly leave days especially if the nanny has no family staying around?
Monthly leave days and her family staying around have nothing to do with each other. Give her the leave and she can decide whether to go or not. But give them to her
I dont find the Uniform issues for a Nanny . Its too formal for me. I would get her an apron and a head scarf or whatever to Cover the Hair while cooking and she can remove It after that.
Oh Kitt quick question, when the housekeeper writes the work schedule,do you keep the copy and like check if they are following it? And also after the contract is issues and circumstances happen..like the leave the job without any notice how do you handle it.
The copy of the work schedule is on the fridge, so we all see it. No, I don't micro manage, checking if they've dusted everyday 😅 I have my own work that I do. I would not pay them if they left without notice.
My aunt had the same issue. She would only buy 1kg. The rest, the housekeeper has to buy herself. Because encouraging misuse and wastage isn't powerful
A litre of milk for 2 ppl 😅🤣 I have a week old nanny. 2 litres of jik done, 1 kg of powder soap, 2 bars of menengai, I can not breath !! 😑 1 week ?? Split between training and letting go, baby food is always burnt, baby doesn't want to be fed or bathed by her so I do it and go to work
I believe your nanny has a scarcity mentality as well as not being trained. If you tell her that the resources are to last a month and that anything that you have to replace, you'll get out of HER own salary, all that will end today! I promise you 😅
Hey great content am learning alot. Kindly give us pointers on how someone working a 9-5 not able to take leave could conduct the 5 day interview. Also how to interview a stay in employee who is not in the town you are in before they travel to your place.

Am the fast person 2day good idea.
This is some great content, I'm here for it. Kitt is there a rule for if one of you breaks the contract? Also what is ur take on cameras in the house?
Rules for broken contracts are brought up in court. I don't like the idea of cameras in any workplace.
😍😍😍 This is great!
Nice content.enjoyed.thanks

My nanny loves tea,so sugar doesn't last.I have learned to deal with that.

Hey great content am learning alot. Kindly give us pointers on how someone working a 9-5 not able to take leave could conduct the 5 day interview.
Also how to interview a stay in employee who is not in the town you are in before they travel to your place.
"Finally fired"? Mmm...That didn't sound that respectful.
Do they have off days? Or do you lump them up?
I think I've covered the off days, if I'm not wrong...
Hae kitt kiarie pliz can you help me to find a job as housekeeper
Hi Veronica, are you still looking?
What type of dresscode do you recommend for your house help
I don't
Lol.
how do you handle her disciplining your kids. what is she supposed to do what is she not supposed to do
She is supposed to do exactly what I do. She is not supposed to do anything I don't do
Do you make uniform for her?or is there a dress code she should adhere to?your thoughts?
I've actually been looking for a uniform that includes pants and a tshirt, because its more comfortable. I don't have a dress code for her
