  • A story: When I was 18 years old, having studied for 2 1/2 years with my beloved teacher and second father, Janos Starker, I returned to Chicago and began getting work as a cellist. Shortly after that, I was asked to play a recital in Madison, Wisconsin, and I learned a program on my own, with no instruction, and it was a wonderfully liberating experience. One of the pieces I learned was this beautiful Divertimento by Haydn, arranged by Piatigorsky. Starker loved the piece, but he used to say that it was actually 30% Haydn and 70% Piatigorsky, or something to that effect. It will always occupy a very special place in my heart. Here is the most recent performance, with my dear friend and simpatico colleague Janet Guggenheim, from the Florestan Trio concert on March 10, 2019 in Palo Alto.
