Thunderbirds was the only children's programme where I can recall adults being genuinely impressed. Personally speaking, I consider Thunderbirds to be the best and most adult of all his series.
I'm 66 now and well remember Twizzle, Torchy, FFF, SUPERCAR and of course ALL the fabulous adventure series that followed. To say they were merely televised puppet series' would be a gross understatement! They were unique, fantastic, superbly put together and highly professional. High drama, great stories, excellent characters and special fx. Gerry Anderson's vision for kids tv was amazing. I actually owned a Twizzle annual and both a model of Supercar and the Fireball XL5 rocket (bought in Hull, England) which you fired from a sling. I also had the Stingray diecast model and TB1 (although I really wanted TB 2). Now, I have the two CGI Captain Scarlet dvds, series 1 and 2, which I really enjoy . Thank you whoever put this series of videos exploring all the GA series. Thank you for taking the time to give fans loads of background info and bringing back many happy memories. I'm setting myself a task now to watch all the videos on the various GA series here on you tube. 🤩😍
An incredible documentary! I thought I'd only watch a couple of segments --- impossible! I saw the whole thing! Twice! As an American teenager in 1974, I discovered Space: 1999. Of course, I knew the Landaus from Mission: Impossible, but I never heard of Gerry Anderson nor any of his shows. I read some books on sci-fi TV and discovered the Supermarionation brand. I felt deprived since these shows never aired on American TV (to my knowledge, anyway). I would have loved these programs growing up! The Anderson story in and of itself is truly inspiring, especially for filmmakers of today! What a gift for entertainment he had! We had Irwin Allen and his shows, our UK cousins had Gerry Anderson! What a great time to live back then!
A true genius,Gery Anderson IS my whole childhood and beyond,i still watch all of them in awe of such innovation, and let`s not forget how many of his ideas bacame actual reality.
"To everything that might have been", "To everything that was" is probably the most beautiful scene in all of Gerry's productions. Still gets me each time I watch space 1999 'Black Sun'. The Anderson's and their whole team were so ahead of everything. It was all done for real, no pressing buttons on a computer as is done today. We will probably never see such creativity again!
I also admired Space 1999 as an 80's kid. But man has to accept Jesus Christ if they must be saved from sin and have eternal life in Heaven and escape hell. Fictional films can't replace the non fictional realityy of God's plan of Salvation to humans, but Satan has blinded the eyes of many not to see the Truth of God's plan for mankind. It's a choice to accept Jesus Christ to get saved or reject Him and be condemned.🌎😚
This really is a wonderful documentary. I grew up in the late fifties and through the sixties. I still remember to this day being captivated by Torchy flying a rocket ship. I also remember something which no one else I have spoken to remembers. Before Fireball actually aired on TV, the weeks leading up to it an advert used to come on only for a few seconds it seemed saying " Fireball is coming" we didn't have a clue what it was till it came out. I loved Supercar, Fireball and the later series like most of my friends did. Thank you so much for posting this, such a big part of my growing up.
@@Helliconia54 Yes I do. I loved that series. It was a bit weird with all the strange sounds they used, also loved the crazy robot control thing lol. Written and produced by Roberta Leigh. What an amazing Lady she must have been with a great imagination. She was quite a looker too. It is nice to find out later in life how these series came about. But as kids we just loved them for what they were and they were fantastic, really fired our imaginations. My mate had a little shed in his garden that we used to play in. That shed has been a Galasphere, Tardis, Space ship, Submarine, you name it lol.
On several occasions, while watching this, I had to wipe tears away. Mr. Anderson, Mrs. Anderson and their many talented colleagues went a long way to making my childhood one full of sweet memories. I saw, and am familiar with the programmes beginning with Supercar on through to Captain Scarlet. Later, I watched Space 1999. However, it is with the Supermarionation shows that my heart lies. Words can not begin to express how much I enjoyed these series. They were like magic to me. They are still like magic to me. I have immense respect for all those who created the puppets and the incredible vehicles and operated all of these items. All this remains much more magical to me than any computer-generated special effects. Everything you saw was REAL! Everything you saw was HAND-MADE from real materials - crafted with great skill and attention to detail. The only misgiving I have with this video is that at times, it sounds too flippant to me - it sounds a bit disrespectful of the Andersons' hard, hard work. Of their work, I have my favourites, but I would NEVER make fun of their work as it sounds to me is being done a bit in the comments during the "Crossroads to Crime" live film section. Thank you to all who are working to keep the Andersons' creations alive and before the public. Best wishes.
In Thunderbird 6. There will be 6 of them. For example: Thunderbird 1, the machine with extensible and retractable wings. Thunderbird 2, giant green transporter. Thunderbird 3, planet to orbit rocket. Thunderbird 4, capable to go into the underwater of the depth. Thunderbird 5, space monitor that receives signals from earth. And Thunderbird 6, Alan's vintage tiger moth biplane.
This must be the best documented video of the Anderson’s, being 64 years old, I remember most of their work.. just when you think the documentary is over, it just carries on.. it’s a shame the Anderson’s daughter has not inherited anything for all of their parents hard work ..
I am utterly amazed and astounded by this phenomenally comprehensive analysis of the Andersons creation! I've learned so much more about a genre which I've always admired. Thank you so much for a wonderfully edited and narrated production.
This was so very interesting and funny. Kudos to the Narrator's animated narration and the hilarious use of parts of the actual shows scripts to add humour. Very well edited 👌👌👏👏👏🥰
Thank you for making & sharing this superbly crafted documentary. I loved the very early elements, some I had never heard of before watching this. Very informative and enjoyable work.
Wonderful stuff. I was lucky enough to be at the right age to enjoy Four Feather Falls, Fireball XL5 etc. While these early series were aimed at children when THUNDERBIRDS came along I realised this was extra special. It was only in the early 70s when I discovered this series was shot in colour and though no longer a young child I relived every great moment of this ground-breaking series. Adult entertainment has never been as thrilling!!!
I remember Thunderbirds being reshown on BBC 1 in 1991 and I was in to it from day 1. That & Captain Scarlet gave some of my best childhood memories. Seeing an imaginary toy world come to life was just incredible.
What a treat. A fantastic resumé. I was born in late '55 so remember these (mostly) with great affection - especially from Four Feather Falls onwards but Supercar was particularly exciting. Great to re-visit these. Great job putting this together, thanks
Your praise of STINGRAY was a joy to listen to. By this time most of the strings were hardly noticeable! Agent X-2-0 in Stingray definitely seems to be a reincarnation of PETER LORRE in both looks and voice.
I liked that the Mysterons told us the plan, one, cuz i like hearing and saying along with them *this is the voice of the mysterons, we know that you can hear us earth man''* and two, it showed their arrogance like *''we think we are far superior to you, so here's our plan, we dare you to try and stop us''*

Thank you for making and posting this video! My word! Mr. Anderson has quite the impressive CV. I only knew his name from seeing bits of Thunderbirds and Space 1999 shows. I found a copy of the complete UFO show DVDs at a yard sale a couple of years ago. I am still working my way through the episodes, but I like the serious and dark tone of the show. Cheers!
Absolutely marvelous traveling down my memory lane, with these classics. Many thanks ChrisDalek and Anderson Entertainment. 💯👏👍💝 Man how I wish Mum had not tossed all my old toys out, when I went off to military service :'(
Oh gawd! I've collected as much as I possibly could of Gerry Anderson from Torchy to Space 1999. But when I got Torchy family and friends ripped the pee out of me when they saw it. But four feather falls opening titles with Tex Tuckers self errecting guns even made me cry out in laughter. But it's amazing how soon Gerrys shows would be so polished sophisticated and glossy by the end of the 1960s.
What a fabulous documentary. I just came by it randomly. Thank you for making the effort. Gerry Anderson sort of matches my life time line. I remember Twizzle and Torchy along with Bill and Ben, The Woodentops, and Andy Pandy from my early childhood - I remember Twizzle with stripy legs, must have been later episodes - and Supercar was my earliest love of science fiction with Robert the Robot and Dr Beaker, great fun memories, and Fireball XL5 was absolute magic for a nipper. I do not recall the cowboy series at all though, so a real revelation there. Stingray was a top favourite through my entire childhood, and as for Thunderbirds - there is nothing I can add, pure excellence. Captain Scarlet was incredible viewing, and I guess Joe 90 was where I started growing up a bit because I do not recall the Secret Service series with Stanley Unwin at all. After that I wasn't paying much attention, but I did enjoy a few episodes of UFO and Space 1999. I love the way you've include the entire repertoire of his great work, and introduced me to some things I was unaware of. I really like your little comical comment inserts - it must have taken you ages to sift through and edit all that stuff into place so effectively - truly brilliant. Watching this has given me new insight into the brilliance of Gerry Anderson and how advanced his thinking was - a true progressive genius, and seeing great Idris Elba in his first role is absolutely fantastic too - Gerry was including black characters in his stories from day one - even if the character in Twizzle and Torchy might seem a bit iffy by todays standards, at least he was making the effort even way back then. Superb stuff, and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Thanks again for taking the time to make this.
UFO...Space 1999, wow what a cool series! The invaders rocked also! I think I discovered my first funny feelings as a preteenager watching the purple headed girl from UFO!!! ohhh...Gabriella Drake!!! ...what a piece!!!
I brought my son up on Captain Scarlet & we both love Secret Service. I have all of the UFO eps on dvd . Which led to the earlier work . We're both big fans
That was excellent. Made with love. Thank you. Had to stop for a moment when he announced Four Feather Falls first aired on the day of my birth! Suddenly felt rather old..............
Fantastic look at all Gerry Anderson’s brilliant work, brilliant that is, up to and including Space 1999, after that for me the magic faded. I will always be grateful for what I consider his best work, THUNDERBIRDS and UFO two series which I still enjoy today!
Amazing documentary. At 66, I barely remember Supercar, but l loved it. Watched all the Anderson series that were on American tv, from Supercar through Space 1999.Lots of Anderson series I never even heard about. Amazing stuff.
This has been the most entertaining and informative documentaries I have ever seen. I have been a fan Gerry and Sylvia Anderson since Tarahawks. Thanks to TUbi I have been able to see almost all over their work. This documentary has given me a greater appreciation for all the Hardwork that was put into each show.
I think, this was;”a brave effort”to bring back a Gerry Anderson show!I can understand, though, why the fan’s liked the original Captain Scarlet, though! But the thing is;Gerry was keeping up with the current technology.
I still believe that Sylvia was the creative brains (no pun intended). Non of the shows after she left were ever as good as the Golden Age. Gerry was a great business man and she was a creative genius (and a wonderful person . I had lunch with her and Derek Meddings in 1988!)
I thought I recognised the style. Hats off to you Sir. Your original tribute from years ago was epic. Now with access to the HD source material and official backing it's even better. Interesting how the later video stuff looks much worse than the 35mm original film Supermarionation stuff. Film just captures so much detail...
I remember Torchy and Four Feather Falls as my earliest TV memories- I think. I just can’t quite recall whether Twizzle was in there. As a child, I thought Mike Mercury was the same puppet as Tex from Four Feather Falls! I still have my Supercar Pilots Licence, which my mother wrote away for. Such wonderful memories. My other memories from this era are of the Eagle comic, and Dan Dare, Pilot of the Future! Usually, all we hear about is the American experience involving superheroes. It’s great to see an encapsulation of the British childhood experience.
Thanks to this series I learned a lot more about Gerry Anderson and which series to watch, also some great insight into extra tidbits and info, also very cool narrator.
This is a beautiful labour of love. My only minor cavil is that an epilogue might have been nice, rather than just abruptly ending after New Captain Scarlet. But that's a VERY minor cavil. Many thanks, Chris!
I will give them 90 Billion out of 10 it is a great job on this man called Gerry Anderson my brother is buliding a new moon base alpha and it is looking real good right now it is something to look at as it is great moon base right now
Just saw the bit about Fireball AXL5 which included a brief clip of The Avengers 4.4 Death At Bargain Prices. In a funny coincidence I rewatched that Avengers episode just beforehand.
50th anniversary Thunderbirds episodes combined as a movie going live in Japan today and TV/streaming channels tomorrow January 7, 2022. So I came across this today surfing the internet like we all would do nowadays.... there was information here I never knew......when I was a kid I would just come across the programs and watch and enjoy them .... I think maybe it was late 60s when I first started watching Saturday mornings on ITV......but UFO was an adult program as I remember.....being broadcast at 11pm I think Friday nights. We had a black & white TV at that time not more than 20 inches.....it took over 30 seconds to warm up!!! I would sneak downstairs to watch it when my parents were sleeping. It is ridiculous now in the age of massive 65 plus OLED 4K displays but it was not about the hardware then....it was about the software content....I was mesmerized ...too young to appreciate the purple hair and other assets of Gabrielle Drake and her groupie moonbase team. I loved most of the programs but Ed Straker's character and UFO was my favourite but of course everyone has their own favourite....such was the depth of Gerry Anderson's work....he left us with so many masterpieces!!! This production on You Tube is astonishing..... I have not seen anything like it up to now ....it encaptures what a Gerry Anderson maniac fan would want to see....the characters over the years getting together so many times ... like a family.... it reminded me somewhat like the Hammer Horror productions at Bray Studios in the 1960s.......the family culture....wow the 60s and early 70s .... what a golden era.... thank you so much for wrapping this up so wonderfully. I am sure this brings many smiles, nods and laughs to many people around the world.
Close to my earliest 'square-eyed' memories and probably a reason why I've always been a 'space-case'. And not alone. There was a conference on HOTOL, the UK's Horizontal Take Off and Landing space vehicle and someone suggested a rail mounted launch system. Someone said 'One day, Gerry Anderson will be recognised as a visionary genius.
superb work. many happy memories brought back.. a vast amount of info I did not know. Thank you for the wonderful walk through memories of my childhood.
Doesn’t get much better than this. I don’t need other UA-cam videos… I have this In all seriousness though. Chris, your video making style has influenced me a large amount, and I re-watch your videos very frequently. Your effortlessly entertaining commentary style and use of clips make your videos a joy to watch. You make the worst of subjects (Torchy) just as entertaining as any other. I met you once in Birmingham, in a hotel lobby before the Stand by for Action concert. I was the kid with the poster in the green Thunderbirds shirt, no idea if you remembered me. Anyway keep up the good work, and I pray for you when Torchy shows up on the Randomiser.
Mr. Anderson is so talented and amazing with his unique ideas. I love his series and I brought the Thunderbirds brothers dolls Scott, Virgil and Alan. I also brought the action figures of the Tracy family and still searching for more items. I did tributes to the Thunderbirds on my UA-cam channel and started created my own dollhouse to be creative. I appreciate his ideas on puppet TV show, he will never ever be forgotten by me. Thanks for this post, it amazes me to watch such a creative man dreams come to life. l love memories of dolls anyway!!!
While all Gerry Anderson productions were shown here in Canada in English on CBC ( Supercar, Torchy, Stingray, Fireball XL5) and CTV ( The Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, Joe 90, Secret Service) it was in their French dubbed version that they endured the most success. In fact, between 1965 and 1988, there was constantly at least one Anderson marionette show being shown, usually Saturday mornings or late weekday afternoons. And most years, all of them from Supercar to Joe 90 would be shown. They were wildly popular. UFO, Space 1999 and The Protectors were often rerun on French channels as well.
Great doc and excellent commentary. Personally, I believed Thunderbirds was the peak of Supermarionation as the series that followed were soulless. I loved UFO as a kid but I didn't really pick up on the adult themes. However, I did soon realise it was only '1980' in certain scenes. The rest of it was anytime between 1958 and 1965. A lot of vintage cars on the road in 1980 ! Great childhood memories 👍
10:22 fun fact: at andercon 2015, i met up with some of my colourisation fans and they noted that pedro the bandit look like wario while i also noted that slim jim look a bit like luigi.
Pure perfection. Gerry Anderson was a genius and never properly recognised as such.

Brings back so many memories
Superb! The research in this is astonishing 😎
Thanks to this series I learned a lot more about Gerry Anderson and which series to watch, also some great insight into extra tidbits and info, also very cool narrator.
Funny that for the guest stars of Space 1999, you did not mention Patrick Troughton, ChrisDalek, although you did mention Peter Cushing.
What a trip down memory lane.. great documentary.. well done..👍
I'm watching this for the second time :) Well done, Chris!
The man and his crew had forethought, cosmic imagination, and good fortune in their development and creations of their films
Such a visionary who could work in multiple genres yet his voice still shone through each venture
This is a beautiful labour of love. My only minor cavil is that an epilogue might have been nice, rather than just abruptly ending after New Captain Scarlet. But that's a VERY minor cavil. Many thanks, Chris!
Brilliant. Both highly amusing and educational. Full of surprising facts!
I love these videos. They are such great to watch and see the history of gerry anderson
I loved Gerry Anderson’s show’s!Fireball X-L-5,Ufo,Captain Scarlet,and Thunderbirds.He was a very talented man back in the early day’s!
A brilliant series, should be released on DVD.
The smooth imposter, Captain Foster. You really had fun on this project, didn’t you, anonymous narrator of this nostalgic commemorator.
I will give them 90 Billion out of 10 it is a great job on this man called Gerry Anderson my brother is buliding a new moon base alpha and it is looking real good right now it is something to look at as it is great moon base right now
Absolutely brilliant. Informative with dashes of irreverent humor. Worthy of repeat viewings. 😀
In 1983 supermarionation was no more. And terrahawks was produced in supermacromation.
Gerry Anderson was a genious.
Just stumbled upon this and can't wait to dig in. Thanks for all of your work! This looks incredible.
Someone said 'One day, Gerry Anderson will be recognised as a visionary genius.
okay when we hit the Secret Service chapter I could not stop laughing. The re-use of Spectrum puppets and your editing was excellent.
Yeah; I mean, they’ve reused Colonel White and Captain Scarlet; could swear I also saw Captain Black
Not to mention Captain Brown
superb work. many happy memories brought back.. a vast amount of info I did not know. Thank you for the wonderful walk through memories of my childhood.
Wonderfull! Well done Chris!
Absolutely Excellent a long time fan of ALL the creations hi from Dallas
The Secret Service is my absolute favorite, the best.
Doesn’t get much better than this. I don’t need other UA-cam videos… I have this
In all seriousness though.
Brilliant just brilliant 👌👍
Good work putting it together.
When I was a little tyke back in the early 50s my favourite program was Bill and Ben the flower pot men 😊👍
i'm from 2002, once found a dvd of thunderbirds and bought it, sinse been hooked
Thank you for sharing this.
What memories that stirs.
Stingray is my personal favorite.
I still enjoy watching that show quite often.
and why wouldnt you-it is magical indeed!!👍
Great job. Watched start to finish. Thank you so much.
How was Gerry Anderson not knighted? It’s unbelievable!
Great work, Chris.
10:22 fun fact: at andercon 2015, i met up with some of my colourisation fans and they noted that pedro the bandit look like wario while i also noted that slim jim look a bit like luigi.
Some proper lols there - well done!
Excellent and well put together thoroughly enjoyed watching the whole vid entertaining and informative thanks muchly ☺
Long live the work of Gerry Anderson!
