Hahaha, Syrian glutfests... I lived in Turkey for 14 years but couldn’t get to Syria; however I have good friends in Antakya, a mostly Arab city that was once part of Syria. When I arrived and was waiting for my friends to pick me up at the airport, I got into a chat with the taxi drivers waiting there...they said “if you stay here you’ll have one of these!” and pointed to their pot bellies. And life truly did revolve around food. Not only did I experience the “every woman in the family has to feed the guest” phenomenon, but noticed that while we were eating dinner one evening, the women would already be talking about what they needed for lunch the next day, or the breakfast after that. It was almost too much and I was grateful for the day we took off into the countryside right after breakfast and hiked till evening with just a few snacks. I love your takes on all your experiences and the way you emphasize the human interaction that makes each country and your experience there what it is.
Have you tried shwa, its from Algeria and you can find it pretty much where ever at night. It is grilled turkey and liver salted and depending on the wood used the taste is a bit different. I highly recommend if you decide to visit Algeria again.

i’m vegan and this is the part i’m most nervous about! i don’t want to offend anyone by refusing meat or dairy, or want to stress people out to make a special meal for me. i’d love to stay with people too
I’ve been a vegan for a few years, and have travelled many countries since. I’ve actually found that it gives me so many opportunities to get out of the beaten track and explore the country in a deeper level. For example, I was in Sweden a few months ago, and everyone I was with wanted to stay and eat by the old town (which is lovely!! but very touristic), so I did some research and went to this little vegan restaurant in another part of the city that is actually one of the oldest vegetarian restaurants in the world! It was hidden in an alley, but had the most amazing view of the city! Travel wide veggie friends! It is worth it!
I lived in Sardinia, Italy, for 2 years and I remember the pasta being AMAZING. I remember going out on a spaghetti boat, and having a spaghetti dish with mussels.
