Kaili Chen
Kaili Chen is a dance artist, teacher, and choreographer based in Stamford, Connecticut, where she founded the Li-Garden Dance Company in 2017. The company is committed to promoting traditional Chinese culture and classical Eastern aesthetics, while also dedicated to teaching and performing both classical and innovative dance styles. Under her direction, Li-Garden Dance Company has developed a rich repertoire and performed at various venues in Connecticut and New York.
Originally from Taiwan, Kaili began her dance training at the age of four under the guidance of several esteemed artists. After graduating from the Hwa Kang Arts High School, she joined the Han-Tang Yuefu Music and Dance Ensemble in Taipei, Taiwan, serving as a principal dancer and rehearsal director for almost 30 years.
She commenced her training of Liyuan Dance, which originates from the royal opera in Tang Dynasty in the 8th century, with the old masters Cai Qingping, Wu Mingsen, and Pan Aizhi, who have been preserving and practicing Liyuan Dance for their lifetime. She also studied martial arts at the Shaolin Temple, renowned for its ancient martial arts tradition in China.
She has performed many classic roles, including male roles, female roles, and clown roles, and became a highly acclaimed star in Liyuan Dance.
She performed at renowned venues such as the Lincoln Center Theater, The Joyce Theater, Théâtre de la Ville in Paris, and the Palace Museum in Beijing. She has toured in over thirty countries across the Americas, Asia, and Europe. Additionally, she has participated in art festivals at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, La Biennale de Lyon, France, Le Festival de l’Imaginaire in Paris, and the Chekhov International Theatre Festival in Moscow.
