I'm glad you addressed the zinc oxide situation! When the articles came out I immediately read the paper and was able to understand some of the issues with it, but I had to talk to a biochemist I know in order to understand everything that was wrong with it. The media just doesn't care how it affects people and that's really unfortunate.
A lot of those ingredients that you listed are just the actual name of ingredients you’re likely already familiar with. In your list, I immediately noticed shea butter, cocoa butter, vitamin E, a variety of safe hydrating fatty acids, an ingredient that’s a natural alternative to salicylic acid, a humectant, and chemical sunscreen ingredients. If you ever want to know what a specific ingredient is, all you need to do is use a search engine such as Google and type in something like, “What is butyrospermum parkii?”, and you’ll see it’s just shea butter. Or, “What is tocopherol acetate?”, and you’ll discover that it’s just Vitamin E.
Love the Smart & Science-y Dr Dray! Thank you for not talking over our heads, and not dumbing down your explanations. You are the perfect mix and a great teacher….Thanks doc!❣️❤️

@20.50 all true. I too had some not-so-great experiences with doctors but also had amazing ones. You should consider writing a letter to the editor of this journal if you feel the study is misleading about the true efficacy of the ingredients in a real-life usage of sunscreens (I haven't read it). Photochemists aren't traditionally trained in formulation of skin care products and they might miss important context to perform this type of studies. That is why multi-disciplinary approaches are important in science! Thank you for this video.
I was diagnosed with formaldehyde allergy last month, and I struggle so much with finding products. I've read countless articles, and downloaded multiple apps to help, but formaldehydereleasers are nearly impossible to avoid.

Wow that concept that mistrust of the medical field lasts generations could not be more true. My dad had a sibling with a lot of medical problems/mistakes which has led him to be extremely mistrustful of the medical field even though he himself is in an ancillary medical field. It's so bad it has led him to put off care because he is so convinced that any doctor he sees is going to make a mistake. I am a nurse and try to encourage him and reassure him but nothing works. I have had to work very hard to overcome my tendencies to have a lot of medical anxiety and some of my brothers have started to avoid medical care. Even though none of us have ever personally had a really bad experience. My parents also have some anti vaxxer tendencies so the whole COVID situation has been interesting. Thankfully they did get vaccinated. They are both over 65 and have pre existing medical conditions.
thank you so much for this video Dr Dray! you are such an important part of my personal research, i don’t know have the training or education on all the chemistry behind my products, but i’m glad we have someone like you to learn from outside of formal education ☺️
I’m the same way; late 20s and don’t wear sunscreen, sleep in makeup and only remove my makeup once every other day worn makeup wipe and use ponds to moisturize, no retinol and most ppl think I’m still in high school. My mom is the same way and she’s in her 50s and ppl think she’s in her 30s. No one in my family wears sunscreen and we all have good skin.
Could you please make a video on how some skin hyperpigmentation is normal? It's really a bit frightening how some people think that any hyperpigmentation means something needs to be fixed.
By the way, I made home made deodorant using bicarbonate of soda, and it bleaches the arm pit skin! So some people might like this side effect, but some people would be sensitive to bicarb as well.
I am curious as to who does these studies and why. Is it cosmetic corporations or curious independent companies? What do they have to benefit from it and who funds it?
I do wonder about.. sunblock that is toxic to fish and etc. If I dont go into the ocean ever, but wash it down the drain will it have the same effect? I would hate to damage coral reefs n what not without knowing.
3:18 Use moisturizers with Niacinamide, licorice root or soy Hydroxy acids are not well tolerated Take breaks from antiperspirants but do not use "natural" antiperspirants
Very true about misinformation. The same with food and diets. I have had to do many years of researching scientific studies and watch debates on UA-cam before choosing a Whole-Food Plant-Based Diet. And I continue to do research as most doctors are not educated well about nutrition. Plus many Food companies hire their own private scientists to make false claims that put profits before patient care!
Not necessarily but talc is occasionally contaminated with asbestos, which can be harmful to human health. Edit: That does not necessarily mean that you should avoid it like the plague. That’s just the source of a lot of people’s fears.
@@lifebrarian I didn’t mean that you shouldn’t avoid asbestos, I meant that it’s an individual choice whether people want to avoid talc, which occasionally comes out as contaminated with asbestos. I apologize for any confusion. It’s similar to when romaine lettuce comes out contaminated with E. coli. Does that mean that you never buy romaine lettuce again? For some people, yes. For some people no. Should romaine lettuce be contaminated in the first place? Of course not.

It's true we do have easy access & even bombardment by the net to info we don't have the education to interpret & understand. I have already spent 5 hrs researching a news article to check the facts & the backgrounds. To basically quick learn enough to understand what the article was really saying & was that congruous with the article's title.
Is it still okay to LAYER coated mineral sunscreen over chemical sunscreen containing Avenbenzone? Ex: Avene Tinted Mineral Fluide (intolerant skin line) over Bioderma Photoderm Milk SPF 50+?
Michelle from Lab Muffin Beauty science always urges her viewers not to, I'm inclined to listen to that advice as she has a PhD in chemistry and is a cosmetic formulator.
Mah daily dose of Dr. Dray. :D My skin has been so dry lately and starting tret doesn't help at all, but Ive been trying this buffer thing with moisturizer. Hopefully, my skin get stays less irritated. :)
She and most derms tend to recommend derma blend. But if you're interested in makeup, there are some derms who have videos on makeup to buy. Dr Sam Bunting and Dr Shereene Idriss have videos of their makeup routines and products. Dr. Shiela Derm has a video on makeup for acne at Ulta. Dr. Sabrina Fabi, Cosmetic Laser Dermatology also has an acne makeup routine. Dr Vanita Rattan (I know not a derm) has done a best/worst of foundations for skin of color with oily/acne skin. She also has a video of her makeup routine.
I’ve been watching you for years and have combed through all your videos but can’t seem to find an answer to Zinc being drying. Both my boys have eczema and anytime I put Zinc sunscreens on them (which I prefer for sun protection), their skin literally almost starts to crack open it’s so dry. Should I avoid Zinc all together and just used Al sunscreen not containing it?
Thank you so much Dr. Dray! You help so many people with your knowledge & informations! I have 1 question, how effective Spf in sunscreen will be if we apply it on top of oily skin surfaces? I tried to apply sunscreen after good 10 mins thin applied rosehip seed oil. I can see it that sunscreen still can forming a film layer on top of oil, seems like almost no differences when I apply sunscreen after non-oily moisturizer, but not sure how effective Spf rating will be...
Dear Doctor , For over 30+ yrs we make our own DIY sun protection cream by using the original DESTIN DIPER RASH OINTMENT ( 40%) & mixing it with jojoba oil & glycerin into a thick white creme . We apply it on our exposed skin even inside the house / rain or shine outside ... We don't mind the mineral cast since our complexion is rather on a Mediterranean side . I wonder what do u think of this . Appreciate ur thoughts ! Thank you very much !
If what you wrote is all that you use then it doesn't have any sun protecting properties at all, I know some people diy their own spf with zinc or use coconut oil which has like spf 2 (which is not good either, spf formulation is a tedious process that undergoes a lot of testing) but this is another level. 😅
@@morgianasartre6709 point is spf is the hardest formula to get right. Chemist would've spent years of study and firmulation tk ensure the right protection as to tge extent of hiw long how far and how effective is it as well as paper based science facts thay simple diy cannot capture
Thank you for this clarification! I appreciate your expertise and feel lucky to have found your channel. It would be easy to come across that study and immediately feel apprehensive about using zinc oxide. You explained the limitations of the study so beautifully! Thank you! I do have a question about using a zinc oxide powder on top of a separate chemical sunscreen product. I use chemical sunscreen-supergoop unseen sunscreen and use BrushonBlock mineral sunscreen as my last step. And I usually reapply with this mineral sunscreen throughout the day. Is there any way to know if they use Coated zinc oxide? I’d hate to think that by adding this mineral sunscreen that it would somehow be degrading the chemical sunscreen underneath. Since it is not a combination product with chemical and mineral together I’m not sure if there would be any concern over that?
I use chemical sunscreen topped with mineral makeup, but l am not sure if the zinc oxude in the mineral makeup is coated or uncoated. Should l be concerned about this? Not in terms of toxicity, but in terms of the sunscreen degrading rapidly. I am so diligent with sunscreen, would hate for all that effort and expense to be for nothing.
I wish I would have had success with the nutrogena product. It burned intensely when I put it on and it wreaked my skin after multiple uses over the span of a week or so. My skin became so dry and irritated that I couldn't even use my normal products without my face feeling like it was melting off. I stopped using it and noticed an improvement within two days.
No but it is toxic to dogs bc it can cause a certain kind of anemia humans can't get so you shouldn't let them lick it off and the only safe sunscreen for dogs is titanium oxide. It can be hard to find a titanium-only sunscreen but I ordered one by FarmStay from S. Korea.

If I use sunscreen it blackened my face why? What should I do?
I’m the same way; late 20s and don’t wear sunscreen, sleep in makeup and only remove my makeup once every other day worn makeup wipe and use ponds to moisturize, no retinol and most ppl think I’m still in high school. My mom is the same way and she’s in her 50s and ppl think she’s in her 30s. No one in my family wears sunscreen and we all have good skin.
so what do you want us to do?
Could you please make a video on how some skin hyperpigmentation is normal? It's really a bit frightening how some people think that any hyperpigmentation means something needs to be fixed.
Greetings d b hope u r well n Happy Thursday😀👍💜….
Happy Thursday, d b! I hope you’re having a good week👍🏼☕️💕🍁
@@vetsai8199 Happy Thursday, VE Tsai. I hope your week is going well and you are taking care.
This is a great video topic idea!
I saw this and started to freak out as I use Neutrogena products as well as Elta MD.
Thanks. You're just lovely ♥️
I do wonder about.. sunblock that is toxic to fish and etc. If I dont go into the ocean ever, but wash it down the drain will it have the same effect? I would hate to damage coral reefs n what not without knowing.
“Wiser years”. Bless you

Use moisturizers with Niacinamide, licorice root or soy
Hydroxy acids are not well tolerated
Take breaks from antiperspirants but do not use "natural" antiperspirants
That's one I haven't heard yet. Some of these rumors are so baffling lol.
I use zinc oxide like sudocream almost 3 yrs now! And I can say is WOW it's work so good on me❤️ so no bad effects all good😘
Very true about misinformation.
Is talc in cosmetics dangerous to use. I keep hearing it is, but it’s in so many cosmetic products. Have a great day!
Not necessarily but talc is occasionally contaminated with asbestos, which can be harmful to human health.
Edit: That does not necessarily mean that you should avoid it like the plague. That’s just the source of a lot of people’s fears.
Asbestos has NO BUSINESS being in skincare. Any contamination is unacceptable. As a consumer, I will not tolerate it.
Fortunately we have you to break down the studies.
Great breakdown of info of study. My takeaway from the study was that if we went swimming with zebrafish we could Hurt them. I didn't understand it at all! I also didn't realize they were combining different formulations
True. I had been wary of using sunscreens because of headlines I had seen about toxicity. Makes you wonder. So glad I found your channel.
Same here.
But i just one day stuck my shoulder next to my face and realised how shit my face looks compared to my sjoulder and realised ide rather get toxic chemicals than this lol
Thank you for the information on zinc oxide. I admit I stopped using all my sunscreens after that report because of how much negative spf research has been coming out lately. Really frightened me until watching your explanation. Thanks again!
It's true we do have easy access & even bombardment by the net to info we don't have the education to interpret & understand. I have already spent 5 hrs researching a news article to check the facts & the backgrounds. To basically quick learn enough to understand what the article was really saying & was that congruous with the article's title.
Honestly I dint even bother with the zinc oxide study... Idc wat nyone says am never gonna quit using ny type of sunscreen
Is it still okay to LAYER coated mineral sunscreen over chemical sunscreen containing Avenbenzone? Ex: Avene Tinted Mineral Fluide (intolerant skin line) over Bioderma Photoderm Milk SPF 50+?
See her video, how to layer sunscreen. She addresses that.
I think it’s dependent if they are using a Avobenzone not the newer filters which are stable.
Michelle from Lab Muffin Beauty science always urges her viewers not to, I'm inclined to listen to that advice as she has a PhD in chemistry and is a cosmetic formulator.
So many controversies about spf. What is happening? Just when the spf is more accepted now compare to before.
Thank you for addressing the sunscreen issue!
Is physical sunscreen 100% is safe to use or not ?

Can we have some skincare tips for a cold climate if you have eczema or rosacea please dr dray
Updated night time routine video soon! U are beautiful and glowing
I’d love to see her with some color and a smile!
Mah daily dose of Dr. Dray. :D My skin has been so dry lately and starting tret doesn't help at all, but Ive been trying this buffer thing with moisturizer. Hopefully, my skin get stays less irritated. :)
Dr dray what's your opinion on clinique makeup? Since they're all fragrance free? Any better than regular makeup?
Thanks for looking out for our mental health Dr.! Bonus🔥
I recently had an axillary breast liposuction which has left me with hyperpigmentation and scarring, this was much needed.
Is Badger a good brand? It's uncoated.
Thank you so much for putting my mind at ease about zinc oxide it’s really a lifesaver for melasma💕
I’ve been waiting for this ! I only trust hearing it from you! ❤️
Thanks for watching
So what *was* the use/focus of the study??
Dr. Dray! Looking pretty in pink. 💙
Thank you making this video!! Love your channel
Don't diy your sunscreen lol there's lack of UV proticting properties
If what you wrote is all that you use then it doesn't have any sun protecting properties at all, I know some people diy their own spf with zinc or use coconut oil which has like spf 2 (which is not good either, spf formulation is a tedious process that undergoes a lot of testing) but this is another level. 😅
@@morgianasartre6709 point is spf is the hardest formula to get right. Chemist would've spent years of study and firmulation tk ensure the right protection as to tge extent of hiw long how far and how effective is it as well as paper based science facts thay simple diy cannot capture
@@apollorayken3774 Isn't that what I just said...?

I might check out a video from Dr. Sam Ellis as she has reviewed the brush on block spf powder.
Thank you for the take-down of the unethical press!
We are told that zinc helps with melasma. Could you something for melasma … best practices
Thanks for clearing the Hyluronic acid part👍👍👍
No but it is toxic to dogs bc it can cause a certain kind of anemia humans can't get so you shouldn't let them lick it off and the only safe sunscreen for dogs is titanium oxide. It can be hard to find a titanium-only sunscreen but I ordered one by FarmStay from S. Korea.
Is nano zinc oxide sunscreen fine? Does it still protect from uv rays?
